Celebrity in the Spotlight: Rahul Bose

As we welcome the month of July, BollyCurry shines its spotlight on yet another stalwart of the industry, one who's touted to be the Sean Penn of Oriental Cinema. We're talking about none other than the immensely talented actor, the face of Indian art-house cinema, Rahul Bose.

Born on the 27th of July, 1967, to Rupen and Kumud Bose,Bose displayed keen interest in acting from a very young age. He would frequently participate in school and college organized stage productions, which was where he got his initial recognition as an actor. Upon graduating from Sydenham College, he worked in advertising until the release of his debut film, English, August (1994), after which he dedicated all his focus towards the art of acting.

Bose went on to act in a number of acclaimed art-house films, including the likes of Everybody Says I'm Fine! (2001) and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), that gained him widespread adulation. However, it wasn't until the release of his first mainstream movie, Jhankaar Beats (2003), that he became a household name. The film was a sleeper hit and propelled Bose into the limelight for his impeccable acting skills. Following this, he starred opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan in Chameli (2003), a film that was a turning point for the duo's career.

 

Bose went on to showcase his talent in a number of mainstream and parallel films, including Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006), Shaurya (2009), The Japanese Wife (2010), Kucch Luv Jaisaa (2011), I Am (2011), Midnight's Children (2012), and Vishwaroop (2013). While some of his films may not have performed well at the box office, given the niche target audience, Bose's acting has always been praised by all and sundry. As a result, he has become the unofficial face of the Indian art-house industry.

 

Most recently seen in Zoya Akhtar's multi-starrer blockbuster film, Dil Dhadakne Do, Bose played the character of Manav, a male chauvinist married to Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra). Bose's flawless acting and his characterization was praised by audiences and critics alike and this only served to paint his name globally.

 

Did You Know?

    (1)  Bose is a national level rugby player and was a part of the Indian Team in 1998, where he played both the scrum wing and right winger positions.

(2)  Bose is also professionally trained in cricket and has learnt the sport under the famed cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

(3) Bose is a known philanthropist and has toured countries giving talks on gender equality and climate change.

(4) Bose was the commencement speaker for BRAC University's 2013 Commencement ceremony.
