Films getting shelved is a common occurrence in the industry. It happens frequently, and actors can sometimes be deeply affected by it. According to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt was so affected by the sudden cancellation of the project that she locked herself in a room to cope with the news. This disappointment was felt not only by her but also by fans, who were left heartbroken when the highly anticipated film "Inshallah," featuring Alia and Salman Khan, was unexpectedly shelved. A few years ago, the excitement was palpable as audiences looked forward to seeing these two stars collaborate in what promised to be an incredible film.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali revealed the emotional impact that the cancellation of "Inshallah" had on Bhatt. While talking about his method of working with actors and uncovering their true essence as performers, the renowned director recounted Bhatt's reaction to the film being scrapped. “She broke down, she cracked up, cried, raved, ranted, and locked herself in a room,” Bhansali shared.
Just a week later, however, Bhansali received a life-altering call from the actress. He proposed that she take on the lead role in his grand project "Gangubai Kathiawadi." At first, Bhatt felt unsure about whether she could portray such a multifaceted character. “From LA, where I was supposed to play the character in Inshallah, I suddenly found myself in Kamathipura. I didn’t know if I could do it,” she confessed to Bhansali. Yet, with his mentorship, Bhatt gradually evolved into the strong, determined Gangubai.
According to Bhansali, once Bhatt fully accepted the character, she “soared into the role” and completely immersed herself in it. Even now, Bhansali shared that Bhatt occasionally slips into Gangubai’s character during discussions. “It’s become such an integral part of her,” he remarked, describing it as a beautiful bond with the role.
Looking forward, Bhatt and Bhansali are preparing to work together once more on "Love And War," a significant project that will also star Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. In his discussion with the publication, Bhansali noted that this film holds particular significance and presents challenges, and he’s committed to investing everything into it. The grand love triangle is anticipated to be released in March 2026, and fans are already buzzing with excitement.
