Bhool Chuk Maaf to Release in Theatres on May 23 After Legal Dispute
The release journey of Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has taken a dramatic turn. Initially set for a theatrical debut, the film was pulled from cinemas just a day before its planned release, with producers Maddock Films announcing a direct-to-digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. The decision came amidst the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict and drew sharp criticism from theatre exhibitors.
Leading the opposition was exhibition giant PVRInox, which took legal action against Maddock Films. The company filed a case citing breach of agreement and sought damages of Rs 60 crore. The matter quickly moved to court, leading to uncertainty around the film's release path.
A resolution was reached over the weekend following court intervention. According to sources close to the matter, the court has cleared the film for a theatrical release on May 23, 2025. Maddock Films is expected to restart its promotional campaign on May 15, signalling a fresh rollout of marketing efforts.
The court's order also included specific directions regarding the film’s streaming schedule. Typically, Hindi films become available online after an eight-week gap post theatrical release. However, Bhool Chuk Maaf will arrive on Amazon Prime Video within two weeks, on June 6, 2025. This shortened window appears to be a unique exception granted under the legal settlement and does not apply to other films.
Importantly, PVRInox has withdrawn its Rs 60 crore compensation claim, allowing both parties to move forward without financial penalties. This move indicates a mutual effort to de-escalate tensions between producers and exhibitors.
The case and its outcome could influence future conversations around theatrical commitments and streaming timelines, especially during periods of political or social unrest. With the film now set to reach cinema halls later this month, the attention is expected to shift back to the audience response and box office performance.
An official joint statement from Maddock Films and PVRInox is anticipated soon, which may provide more clarity on the way forward.
