Adil Hussain reacts to Sandeep Reddy Vanga's claim that he got famous due to Kabir Singh; quotes Ang Lee

Last year, Animal was one of the biggest successes for Bollywood. It made more than Rs 900 crores worldwide. Sandeep Reddy Vanga did not take criticism to his film lightly. He lashed out at those who slammed his brand of cinema, which has been labelled as toxic, misogynistic and hypersexual. Adil Hussain had said in an interview that if he had read the entire script of Kabir Singh, he would never have agreed to the project. He said he could not watch the film beyond 20 minutes as he was aghast at the display of hyper masculinity. Sandeep Reddy Vanga hit out saying that while he had done more than 30 arthouse movies, Kabir Singh seems to be his only claim to fame. Adil Hussain who has even worked with international filmmakers like Ang Lee recently reacted on it. 

Adil Hussain told a publication that he could not believe that Sandeep Reddy Vanga actually counted his movies before putting up that post on X. He took a sly dig saying that he had makers like Ang Lee and Mira Nair on his CV, and wondered if Vanga considered himself more famous than them. Hussain reminded people that Lee had won the Oscar for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon even before he made Life Of Pi starring him.

I can't believe he actually counted my films. Honestly, I don't know what to say to that. If Ang Lee is less famous than him or Mira Nair is less famous, then I have nothing to say. Ang Lee was an Oscar winner before Life of Pi.

He further said, “So, god bless Sandeep Reddy Vanga for taking the time to count the films I've done. I understand he's upset about what I said, but I've never blamed him”. Adil Hussain said he whole-heartedly accepted that he fumbled by not reading the script of the movie. He said even if he gave 100 reasons for not reading the script it would not redeem his decision. It also said it would be immaterial. He stated, “It’s my fault, and when I watched the film, I realized that I made a big blunder.” 

Adil Hussain said that film actors and makers need to be careful due to the nature of India’s audience. He said people are deeply influenced by the movies. The English Vinglish star said that fans literally build temples and statues of their favourites and worship them like Gods. Hence, the narrative and messaging of a film has to be correct. Hussain had said while making a film one needs to account for the “innocence and intellectual level” of the audience. 

He reiterated, “If you make a movie that glorifies violence and misogyny, I will always retain my right to criticize you.”
