Among many of the different commendations for April, one of the more popular ones is April 10th which celebrates Encourage a Young Writer Day. So, today, BollyCurry does just that by bringing to you one new director, writer, and lyricist of recent times.
The first celeb on our list is none other than the young talented writer-director Ayan Mukerji. Hailing from a Bollywood-oriented family, he debuted as a film director at the age of twenty-six with Wake Up Sid (2009), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma in lead roles. The film revolved around Sid Mehra (Kapoor), a spoiled and carefree son of a rich businessman (played by Anupam Kher) who fails in school and after a fight with his father, decides to move out and live his life on his own way. The movie depicts his journey where he slowly but surely learns the meaning of life, takes control of it and makes up with his father, all thanks to his roommate and friend, Ayesha (Sharma), who he also loves. This film highlights the lives many youngsters lead, especially after being pampered for much of their youth by their parents. Mukherji then wrote and directed 2013's blockbuster Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur and Kalki Koechlin. This movie focused on the life of four young college students from the age of 21 to 30 and their experiences, dreams, hope, disappointments, fear, travel, family, music, dance, friendship and love. Once again, Mukerji brought to us a movie that connected with the audience of what may be small threads of their own stories.
BollyCurry hopes to see many more youth oriented films from this amazing director. Touted to be directing a superhero film starring Ranbir Kapoor for a third time in lead role, can he recreate the same impact that his first two films have made?
Next up is Vikramaditya Motwane, a young promising writer and director. After assisting Sanjay Leela Bansali for a period, Motwane started his career as a writer with Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (2007). As the title suggests, the film revolves around football and highlights the issue of racism in England. It is a heart-touching story of Shaan (Arshad Warsi) who wishes to save his club from dissolving and seeks Tony Singh's (Boman Irani) and Sunny (John Abraham)'s help. Unfortunately, the film didn't go down well with critics or with the audience. Motwane's next film Dev.D (2009) did better at the Box Office and was declared an average movie, receiving mostly positive reviews from critics. The movie starred Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Mahie Gill in lead roles and was a modern take on Sarat Chandra's Bengali novel, Devdas. Motwane tasted immense success with his film Udaan (2010) that instantly won critics' and public's hearts. Written and directed by himself, it revolves around a seventeen year old boy (Rajat Barmecha) who returns home from boarding school to his abusive and oppressive father (Ronit Roy) and half-brother Arjun (Aayan Boradia) and their life thereafter. Motwane's latest release starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha is Lootera (2013), a periodic romantic drama based on O. Henry's short story, The Last Leaf. Although the movie did average business at the Box Office, it was much appreciated by critics.
We select this amazing writer for his attempts at always trying something out-of-the-box, whether it be the modern taken on morbid classic or a fight of a son against his dictator father. BollyCurry hopes to continue seeing many more unique films written by this inspiring writer hailing the same success as his latter ones did.
Last but not the least, Amitabh Bhattacharya, who writes beautiful lyrics and is currently the dream lyricist of every director/producer, rounds up our list. Bhattacharya started his career with six tracks written for his friend Amit Trivedi for Aamir (2008), However, he received recognition as a lyricist for the iconic track "Emotional Attyachar" from Dev.D (2009). Since then, there was no turning back for him who has delivered continuous back to back hits. Bhattacharya is more popularly known for delivering soulful hits as the majority of his songs strike a personal cord with listeners. Whether it be the ode to Ganpati in "Deva Shree Ganesha", or the first touch of love in "Subhan Allah" and "Sawar Loon" or the sadness of losing someone close in "Kabira", Bhattacharya has has that magic touch that is bound to touch the soul. Nonetheless, he has also written several party numbers such as "Second Hand Jawani" and "ABCD". Some of Bhattacharya's hits include "Deva Shree Ganesha" from Agneepath (2012), "Second Hand Jawani" from Cocktail (2012), "Kabira" from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013), "Sawaar Loon" from Lootera (2013), "Khoon Choos Le" from Go Goa Gone (2013), "Zehnaseeb" from Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), "ABCD" from Yaariyaan (2014) and "Locha-e-Ulfat" from 2 States (2014).
BollyCurry hopes that Bhattacharya keeps churning out hits that make us want to cry, love, party, sigh in content and all around make us want to listen to his tracks over and over again. Needless to say, we eagerly wait to see what he has in store for us next.
On Encourage a Young Writer Day, we not only encourage these young writers, but all those new and upcoming writers, directors, and lyricists who have entered the Bollywood industry bringing with them a fresh new perspective in movies and music alike. If you know an aspiring writer, acknowledge them to help make a difference, your support counts.
