#2k17: Are we FINALLY witnessing the END of saas-bahu sagas on Indian TV..??

This line-up of 'out-of-the-box' shows suggests so..

In 2016, we kept mentioning about this year having been the year of 'revolution'; as the year spawned several shows with several 'niche' concepts which came as a surprise to one and all.

However, just as we talk about how TV has been changing, we can safely say that 2017 will actually be the year which will staunchly be presenting that.

There is an array of shows set to hit the tube soon, and they certainly are the 'out-of-the-box' or 'unconventional' (as we call it) ones to look at.

The concepts are alluring and intriguing

While some shows' promos have gone on-air, other shows' plots have been revealed. Whatever may be the case, the shows look more promising than ever. We are entering into a phase which will hopefully give birth to a new era. From showcasing the shocking practices of treating women to women empowerment, from modern relationships to complexities of it, we are set to be welcoming a NEW way of viewing television.

The foundation has been laid; the pillar is awaited!

We cannot ever thank the makers of shows like 'Beyhadh' and 'P.O.W. - Bandi Yuddh Ke' enough for giving us the novelty we desperately awaited. The mere fact that someone dared to get these shows being made with an alluring star cast and impeccable performances was the change we needed. These shows, unfortunately, aren't the money spinners like the other regressive sagas, but the change was finally initiated.

Shows like 'Ghulam' and 'Meri Durga' are set to be presented and there couldn't have been a better example to justify this point. On one hand, there is the setting of a village who adopts cruelty and malpractices towards women and the sheer atrocities that belong; while on the other hand, we see a rural setting, where a father, who is the peon of a school struggles and works day-night to provide the right education to her daughter.

Every change takes it own time!

Being absolutely realistic and rational, we cannot expect the 'change' or 'transition' to happen overnight. The process is a tiresome one and will showcase results only gradually. The reason some brilliant shows do not do well in terms of numbers is that the viewers have alternatives ready. If one doesn't want to watch a 'boring' or 'uninteresting' show, he/she can switch over to something rather 'usual' and 'regressive'.

With more shows being presented and taking over the block, it is only hopeful and soothing that the options are gonna be better and encouraging.

Are we FINALLY witnessing the end of saas-bahu sagas?

It is only unfortunate that kitchen politics, husband-wife-and that person concepts and saas-bahu regression that continues to rule television when it comes to ratings. And recently, we mentioned about a progressive show like 'Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi' also becoming the quintessential saas-bahu saga for a brief amount of time. However, with shows like 'Woh Apna Sa', 'Dil Se Dil Tak' and 'Moh Moh Ke Dhaage', we are optimistic that, though these shows' first look may appear to be something which we have seen time and again; the actual crux of these shows is gonna be path-breaking.

For instance, a show like 'Kumkum Bhagya' has been a TRP ruler for all these years, where it keeps portraying rubbish storylines where repetitive stuff is a common occurrence. I mean, there is a husband who is apparently the most eligible guy in the world that two ladies keep planting plots against each other to obtain him and the guy's sister has her own agenda running.

Though 'Dil Se Dil Tak' and 'Woh Apna Sa' will showcase some similarities i.e. 'pati patni aur woh'; these tales are radically different. Not focusing on the done-and-dusted concept, these shows will be presenting modern relationships and the complexities that come with it. Certainly progressive, don't you think?

It is only the beginning...

Though we are talking about how 2017 will be the 'New Year' in a rather literal sense, it is important to remember that this is only the beginning. To actually being a change in television viewing, these steps will require adequate support and that is in the hands of the viewers. Lesser the options to switch over to depleted concepts, more the chances to witness progressive cinematic experience.
