Chapter 2
Shaurya walked away towards his room all confused and frustrated .Mehak followed him. She was quick enough to hide behind the separation wall , when the two brothers met face to face. she could feel them exchanging cold stares. In the nick of the time both of them averted their gazes. Shaurya walked away , while Veer smiled expecting the same in response .She felt sorry for him. She kept pondering for a while what could be the reason behind this cold behavior, among them. She stood there until his image disappeared before her eyes, but what caught her attention was, that he was limping. May be he had injured his foot, she thought in her mind. She moved towards their room, she saw him (Shaurya) in front of the dresser, his eyes deeply fixed on the mirror as he slowly detangled his tie. And quickly entered his washroom.
She moved towards the balcony, the place that witnessed the most embarrassing , precisely disgusting event of her life till date , her bouquet of roses occupying a corner. She gritted her teeth and squeezed her eyes out of guilt, shame and what not. Tears oozed out from her doe shaped eyes and she wailed silently like a baby. She wept her tears while gently rolling her palm onto her cheeks. She loved him with all her heart and how could she fail to distinguish between him and his brother. She closed her eyes reminiscing their first fight. Ironically or not, the mere mention of Veer was somehow the reason for their very first silly argument. That was when they planned (ideally she)planned a movie date.
Flashback#
She stormed out of the cinema hall blabbering anything and everything, while he followed partly paying attention to her cute banters. âTumhe apne phone pe hi chipakna hai toh, ghar pe kyun nahi rehte (if you were keenly interested in using your phone, you should have been home right)â...she spoke annoyingly while discarding her quarterly relished red velvet cornetto in the waste bin. â Tum apna gussa ice cream pe kyun nikaal rahi ho?â(oh my why that poor ice cream need to face your wrath)..he mocked trying to suppress his laughter. âMovie date thi Hamari , koi business meeting nahiâ. She walked ahead of him blabbering the same. âOk fine letâs plan it for next weekâ..he voiced behind her back. She smiled hearing him, but surprisingly turned back on encountering a new voice. âHey Veer!..long time haan..you look so changed. When did you return?â..A man came forward embracing Shaurya in a hug. âAm sorry , you are mistaken. Iâm Shauryaâ..an annoyed Shaurya retorted . âOh Iâm sorryâ...the guy introduced himself and continued talking and inquiring about Veer , though she maintained a considerable distance from the duo, she could very well see how uncomfortable Shaurya was. When the stranger was out of sight, she neared him without missing a chance to tease him. âHello Mr Veer â.. she mimicked loud enough to garner his attention. âDonât you dare to address me by his nameâ..with his blood red eyes he scanned her and twitched her wrist as if strangling her being. He left her there teary eyed. She embarrassingly cornered her eyes away from the crowd. She relied on quick footsteps to disappear from the scene. That was probably the first time, she could feel and witness his hatred for his twin brother. Ever since then she was cautious while conversing with him. Though this question beamed in her mind ,unanswered .she kept it all to herself.
###
She looked towards their room. There was no sign of him. â I donât know whatâs wrong with him.â..she self talked. An hour passed, and she spotted him finally stepping out of the washroom. He spots her via the mirror as he brushed his hair. He looked calm and composed than before. He took his phone and pretended to randomly swipe, as he neared the balcony. She very well knew Mr khanna is upto his usual way of conversing as if nothing happened. He settled on the couch, stealthily looking at her in intervals. âNot this time Mehak, Let him struggle a bit to gain your apologyâ..her mind warned her. She walked towards the washroom ignoring him. After freshening up, she stood in front the dresser brushing her hair. The silence was literally killed, as they heard few knocks on their door. âShaurie, Mehakâ..they stood up on hearing Karuna Maa. As they reached for the room entrance, there stood Karuna Maa and Veer smiling contagiously.
She averted her gaze as she still couldnât get over the embarrassment and turned to face the duo.âI guess I donât need to introduce myself .Hearty congratulations to both of youâ. Veer said while forwarding a lovely bouquet of flowers. Mehak thanked him and accepted the same with a half smile.Shaurya was looking elsewhere, but he stood close to her smirking. She moved her eyeballs in a flicker looking at both of them simultaneously, capturing their differences in unison. For a moment she turned that 5year old laddoo, who looked baffled meeting those twin brothers for the first time. She canât repeat the same mistake, she made a mental note.âsorry , I couldnât attend your wedding, well please do accept this small token of love from my sideâ...Veer smiled gleefully while forwarding an envelope. Mehak looked simultaneously at Karuna maa and Shaurya. She needed an approval at least from either of them. Karuna maa closed her eyes in assurance. Mehak reluctantly accepted the same with a feeble smile.
âThatâs your honeymoon tickets to London. I have made arrangements for your stay thereâ..he said as she opened the envelope. Mehak was sceptical on how to react. She was super excited for their honeymoon ever since they had plans to get married. She wished to visit every corner of the world with her man. Shaurya's husky voice ringed in her ears bringing her back to reality. âRight now Iâm much busy with my work..she is also bit busy, so thank youâ...Shaurya told plainly , passively meeting his brotherâs eyes. Karuna maa fixed her gaze on the floor unable to comprehend the invisible wall of separation between her sons. âItâs an open ticket, you can travel as you wish..I mean when you are freeâ..Veer said with a smile, signalling Mehak while fixing his gaze on Shaurya. They both left their room, while Mehak stood at the door being embarrassed. She very much intended to give her hubby a lecture on his rude behaviour, but refrained from the same. In the nick of the moment Shaurya turned towards her and started mimicking her..âtumhe itna rude hoke baat Nahi Karne Chahiye tha, woh tumhara Bhai hai etc etcâ(you sounded so rude, he is your brother right). She huffed seeing his expressions and hit on his biceps. â Fine.. anyways...Maa has got some reason to be happy...pyaara beta jo laut ke aaya hai, saat saal bhad (her beloved son has returned, seven years later tho)â...he said sarcastically while moving towards the couch. âSeven years!â...she exclaimed loud enough to capture his attention. âcome , sit here âhe signalled her. Before she could utter a word, Awara came in holding a food tray. âLet Maa and beta enjoy their me time, we will have our dinner hereâ..he poured out his sarcasm. âBut..this isnât right na, Maa will feel bad you seeâ...she tried to convince him. âNot today Mehakâ..he was adamant. âSo tell me, how did you feel after meeting my brotherâ..sarcasm filled in his words. She looked elsewhere, trying to conceal her uncomfortableness. âDoctor hai ..kis cheez ka...mere paas jawaab nahi. Biwi bacche hai ya nahi, yeh bhi pata nahiâ(He is doctor, excuse me I donât know his specialization. And I donât know whether he is married or has kids too)...Shaurya added sarcastically. She looked at him intently without uttering a word. It has been his way to keep her guessing muddling up her brain with his words. She could spot that lil child who is jealous and uneasy, if sheâs not wrong.
Downstairs, Karuna affectionately fed Veer a morsel, simultaneously wiping off her tears. Veer tried hard to conceal his guilt. He inquired about Shaurya and Mehak, hopefully looking at the stairs. Karuna tried to deviate his attention as she knew very well ,how adamant Shaurya is. She knew Shaurya needs time and she didnât want to put any pressure neither on him nor her doting daughter in law. Mom son duo enjoyed their dinner after years still immersed in a void of silence.
After finishing up their dinner She took the dishes finding it as an excuse to reach downstairs. He gave her an impossible nod as he very well knew what was running in her mind. Making the best out of the existing opportunity she left. As she reached downstairs, the mother son duo were seen sharing a warm moment dipped in silence. Veer laid on the couch placing his head on his motherâs lap and she affectionately caressed his hair. The glint in her eyes was unmatchable, it looked like seven ages rather than seven years. After a while, he left for his room. Mehak hid behind the curtains as she didnât intended to meet him. And again she witnessed his disappearing image and he limped a little this time too, she stood there wondering about the same.
She smiled amicably on meeting her doting daughter in law . âTum dono ne Khana khaya beta?â(you two had dinner) . Iâm sorry Maa, I apologize on Shauryaâs behalfâ. Karuna blinked back her tears as if trying to brush off the topic. âTum use khadoos bulati hai na, mujhe pata hai Woh Kitna ziddi hai. Tum aise baatein ko dil pe mat lena beta.â(you address him as khadoos right?.I very well know how stubborn he is. You please donât take these things seriously). What's bothering Shaurya and Veer....I mean Veer bhai Maa?â..she corrected and continued.. âIâm sorry to bother you Maa, but I feel that you are hurt by Shaurya's behaviour.Their relationship seems to be not normal . It looks butchered.â
â It is not broken beyond repair beta it has been seven long years since I saw them talking and I'm unaware of the reason too, apne jigar ke tukde ko aise bichhadte hue nahi dekh sakti main, dum ghutta hai . Donon ka aapas ka maamla hai, shayad veh donon milkar suljhane ge ek din (well the matter is between them, hope they may sort it out some day).Agar kal me na rahun,..to ...toh shayad..do ajnabiyon ki tarah rehne lagenge. (I canât see them living like two strangers, it is so suffocating, I feel the worse is yet to come, when Iam no more)â....Karuna broke into tears clasping the material of her nightwear in fear. âNahi maa, aap aisa mat kahiye.(please donât say like that Maa) Atleast they have met right. Gradually everything will be fine. Iâm not here to know the reason either, and I wonât..unless he feels that it is worth sharing with me. But if there is anything that I could do to help you..please let me know Maa.â..she assured and turned to leave. Karuna wept her tears calling out her name .. âMehak.â..and neared her. âIâm sorry that , you have to deal with all these things a day after your marriage. Things were different before. ..Iâm sorryâ...she said while holding her chin affectionately. âMaa please donâtâ..Mehak said while firmly holding her hand and continued. âTrust me Maa, everything will be fine, that too very very soon, good night have a tight sleepâ. And they parted with a warm hug.
As she reached back her room, he was busy with his laptop as expected. She closed the door and quietly got under her blanket, turning of the ceiling lights , all the while staring on the empty wall which focused on his silhouette aided by the lampshade. After a while to her surprise, she felt a commotion on the bed, as he moved towards her crawling on the bed like an infant. She twisted her brows in disbelief. âWhat!â...he exclaimed while cuddling onto her. She continued to stare at him in disbelief. And he cuddled more. âKya tumhe abhi bhi lagta hai ki, tumhe shaadi nahi karni thi.(you still think that we shouldnât have got married?) Tumhara live in wala idea teekh hota na, bina kisi commitment, ek doosre ke parwa kiye bina. (Your live in idea was great, without commitments and not bothering about each other)â ..she asked while fixing her eyes on the ceiling. Guilt surged in his mind on hearing her âIâm sorry Mehak, I wouldnât have spoken to you like thatâ. She was way more surprised to hear him, as her eyes almost popped out of her eye balls. â Tumne sorry bola, I mean the great Shaurya khanna sorry bolta haiâ(you apologized to me...I mean the great Shaurya Khanna knows how to apologize?). âKya karein shaadi ke baad toh har kisi ka yahi haal hota hai.(well this is what happens after marriage right)â..he replied dramatically while nuzzling onto her hair. âRehne dete hai, abb tumhara koi important call aayega beech mein daraar banke.(leave it, I know now your phone will beep you will be busy with your so called important business call.)â..she complained while playfully pushing him away. âIâm sorry for yesterdayâ..he replied reminiscing how he spoiled their first night with his virtual business meeting, and how she continuously blabbered about the same, being annoyed before hitting the bed. She hit his biceps in return. While he pecked her ears umpteen times muttering apologies. She couldnât win over him as well as his ministrations, enough to sublime all her worries and eventually she melted. âyou are feeling bad , that you didnât get time to spend with Maaâ...she questioned while gently pulling his nose. âoh so you think that , I came to you since I was missing Maa, fine then.â..he tried to turn away trying to depict being annoyed. âArey..now the whole blame goes to me haanâ..She exclaimed while poking her finger onto his cheeks. âyou are such a baby at timesâ..she muttered while placing a full vacuum kiss on his cheek. He too tried to reciprocate while focusing on her lips. In the nick of the moment she turned her face. He made some mental ramblings to tease her and his babyish tone called her.. âmissing teethâ. She huffed in anger... âno..no .. Shaurya..please haan donât call me like thatâ. He smirked while tickling her as he said..âAccha suno yeh Same same ke bahane, mere hisse ki kisses use mat dena. (And donât give my share of kisses to him, with your same to same criteria)â. All those emotions oozed out of her face all of a sudden. âWhat happened?â He asked scanning her face. âI was just joking Yaar â..he added. She cuddled him more ,rather than uttering a word. He comforted her, making a mental note (how sensitive she is) and wondered about her weird reaction, âshe is still that kid, who was once flabbergasted watching us togetherâ..he smiled kissing on hair lovingly . For the very first time, she thought of keeping a secret, hiding her most embarrassing moment. She was perplexed whether he would take the matter lightly or not, coz he was unpredictable. As the night progressed she peacefully slept in his embrace...it was this, the warmth he provided, the undisputed reason of her peace.
Next day,
Shaurya hesitantly joined everyone at the breakfast table. He wished not to displease his Mom and his better half. Karunaâs face beamed with happiness. Veer too smiled, but was ignored in the best way by his twin. Mehak wished them âgood morningâ..Veer reciprocated the same warmly.
âShaurie...khaana poora khakar toh jaao beta. (Shaurya finish your breakfast son)â..Karuna requested as he got up partly finishing his breakfast. â Bas maa, pet bhar gaya, waise bhi mein toh roz aap hi ke haath ka khana khaata hoon na maa. Pichle chabbis saal se toh swad barkarar hi hai. (Enough Mom..I'm full, and btw the taste of your food is still afresh in my taste buds since 26 yrs)â..he added with sarcasm, wiping his lips with a clean napkin . Veer twisted the piece of roti in hands hearing him, and the smile faded away from Karuna's face. Mehak rolled her eyes, and he winked at her in return. She very well knew he wonât miss the opportunity to taunt his brother. Before he could utter a word, she grabbed her bag and signalled him to walk away. âWe are getting late Maa, see you in the eveningâ..she said while preparing to leave. Shaurya came closer touched his mom's feet and kissed her cheek. Karuna kissed him in return and gently patted his cheek affectionately. Apna aur meri beti ka dhyan rakhna...aur khana bhi time pe khaa lena.(do take care of my daughter as well nd have food on time). Mehak joined the duo in a comfy side hug. Veer watched them deeply and smiled.
Shaurya was in deep thoughts rolling the paper weight on his table. His freshly brewed cup of cappuccino patiently waiting for his attention. Though he pretended to be unaffected. Veerâs return did make changes in him. After all these years he found a new happiness adoring his mom's face. She loved him dearly with all her heart, but what about her soul ..it was still yearning for Veer, he had witnessed that since the last few years. He was happy for her, atleast she got her wish fulfilled after all these years. He didnât fail to notice the changes in his twin. If things were different he could have got a chance to know more about him. He missed his brother, but their equation is such that he has got no reason to celebrate his return. Well broken relations are just like rust, a new coating just impress others, but the rust or precisely the bitterness still persists within. Inside this polished image of being the most successful businessman, he has a corroded past. He kept even his love life away from the close quarters of few things. Yes..she does have the right to know him deeply, he has promised and vowed the same. But few things are still an exception, until when..he never knew.He wish to keep things to himself, and hope Mehak understands the same.
Veer and Karuna Maa were having a hearty conversation, and Mehak was back home after work and Karuna asked her to join them for a tea in the lawn. Veerâs marriage was the topic under discussion. Mehak pursed her laughter on hearing Karuna Maaâs fear of handling a foreign daughter in law. Veer was trying in every possible way to convince that he isnât ready for marriage and if at all he marries, it will be a girl of Indian origin. She didnât wish to be a part of this private conversation between Mom and son, but Alas she was trapped. She noticed unlike Shaurya Veer had a special love for this hot beverage. One more difference to be noted my lord. Veer smiled at her and she returned the same. âMehak and Shaurya ko hi dekh lo. Kitne acche lag rahe hai dono. Bilkul rab ne bana di jodiâ(just look at Shaurya and Mehak, how amazing they both look together, truly a match made in heaven)â..Karuna replied with a doting smile, while Mehak smiled shyly. There emerges a zero expression on his face ..and he was in deep thoughts. Karuna stressed again..âhaina Veerâ bringing him back to reality.âyes Maa.. absolutelyâ..he reciprocated. âI still remember, those days when these two used to fight like kidsâ...she added with a mere laugh and continued... âand now see for yourself, they are life partners nowâ. âMarriage should be done wholeheartedly. Its divinity need to be preserved till eternity. It shouldnât be an aftermath of a live in relationship. Mein sahi kah raha hoo naa Mehakâ.(Iâm telling the truth right Mehak)..Veer smiled after his dramatic query. She stared at him shockingly and not so pleasingly. âI mean.. thatâs quite common these daysâ..he tried to cover up.âIâm talking about ..about life in Londonâ..he added.
Veer was more jovial rather than being aloof. So It was easy for her to get used to him as well as his mannerisms. He had that pious and calmness in contrast to what Shaurya possessed. When Karuna left , Veer tried to converse. âApologies..I couldnât have trespassed your balcony that day. It was equally embarassing for me too. That beautiful smile suits your face rather than this awkwardness, so please ignore it, it happened accidentally donât blame yourself." Mehak gave a simple nod nd a feeble smile to convince him. âDekho chote ki tarah tum bhi mujhse naaraz nahi hua karo na.(please donât be upset with me, like chote(Shaurya). How is your family?..itâs been such a long time since I met them".he added. She felt sorry for him then. "I'm fine don't worry bhai". She concluded. Veer looked at her surprisingly. ..an exclaimed "Hey you address me as Bhai?..I mean really ??!!!! .. that's really odd you see". "I'm sorry but I'm used to it"..she replied. "Do I look that old?"..he joked. "You are Shaurya's elder brother right, in that sense"..she completed and turned to leave. "Good night and take care."..he wished her and she looked at him perplexed. "No Maa told me that you both are dining out today..so"..he gave the wide explanation. " Good night" ..she replied back formally. "Ok sorry..then good night in advance"...he corrected with a mere laugh. She smiled back at him and wished him the same. She was relieved with the conversation. It literally sort out her mental tension. He was too relieved and smiled warmly when they parted.
Days passed, though the brother duoâs equation didnât change, there werenât any sign of new issues. Karuna tried to find content with the existing vibe. Wrapping up her work in the restaurant Mehak reached back home. She had plans to work on her studio, her dream project. Only after taking a desired break from the daily hustle and bustle.
Veer was busy in his room packing his luggage, he was about to leave in 2 days. Though Karuna insisted him to stay back, he was adamant to leave. Mehak wished them to sort out all the differences, but she was helpless too. She tried her best to convince Shaurya, but it was all in vain. At times she felt like a being a clown, trying to join the ends , having no idea about the actual thing. Though it seemed like exploiting her self respect, still she made attempts for the sake of Karuna. As Karuna maa and Mehak were busy discussing the same, with their evening chai, they heard a not so sickening thud. As they rushed towards the sound, there lay Veer on the floor, injuring his forehead. Awara helped them carry Veer to his room. Mehak consoles Karuna who was weeping. Though there was minimal blood flow, the wound looked deep. Mehak helped with the first aid as Karuna dressed his wound. Veer hissed in pain and Karuna cried uncontrollably.
âMehak , beta please call the doctorâ...she requested and Mehak nodded in response. âplease don't..Mehak, I'm fineâ..Veer made a request and continued.. âmera bas yeh sirf mamooli sa chot hai.(well itâs just a small injury). Nothing seriousâ. âBas zara si chot haan, tumhe tez bukhaar bhi hai.(you have caught fever too Veer, and you are saying it isnât severe)â...Karuna wept her tears scolding him. â No Maa Iâm fineâ. Karuna was adamant not lending ears to him .. âBass chup ekdum chup tu abb kahin nahi jayega(keep quiet, I donât wanna hear anything ,you arenât going anywhere)â. âMaaâ..Veer tried to plead and terribly failed in his attempt.
Shaurya looked surprised when doctor Arora's vehicle made an exit . âAwara...what happened ? Why was doctor Arora here? Maa is she fine?â....he questioned as Awara stood near the entrance. âSir..woh Actually...Veer Sir fell down from the stairs and injured in foreheadâ...Awara replied piously. His face turned pale immediately as if a sharp object pierced his heart. It didnât go unnoticed by Awara, and he spoke a word feeling the uneasiness of his master. He had become a part of Khanna mansion just few years back, but he knew about them since childhood, as his father worked for them for years. âVeer Sir is having slight fever , rest everything is fine sirâ. Shaurya thanked him without meeting his eyes and left for his room. He was restless and paced around his room constantly. When Mehak entered, he was quick enough to ask about Veer. Mehak looked at him in amuse.. âTumse zyada bipolar insaan meine dekha hi nahi.â(I havenât seen a bipolar person in my life apart from you,) . He was annoyed and spilled out his sarcasm....âAccha! Mere bhai se milne ke baad bhi tumhara opinion change nahi hua?â(is it, I mean you didnât change your opinion even after meeting my brother?). âI just asked casually, Iâm not curious you seeâ..he tried to cover up and grabbed his phone. She held his arms scanning his face. He couldnât decipher a word.
âAgar itni fikar hai toh, khud pooch leni chahiye na apne bhai se, apna khoon kyun jala rahe ho. (If you are much worried about your brotherâs condition, go and ask him, stop boiling your blood) â. He was annoyed and replied.âIâm least bothered you know, I just asked casually I repeatâ. Mehak lost her cool and confronted him... âHe must have got some reasons right. Jaise tumhare genuine reasons hai waise unke paas bhi kuch hoga na. (Like your reasons are genuine that you donât wish to disclose, his case must also be the same).Just let it go na Shaurya, Anyhow he is back. Why canât you be the same like beforeâ. It is very easy to keep grudges and very difficult to let go off things. You donât like anything the easy way right, you prefer complicated and difficult choices. Then make the difficult choice. The fact that I donât deserve to know anything about your life right .. (suppressing her tears) fine then. But canât you spare a moment to think about your Mom. Who is stuck between you two.â ..tears spilled out from her eyes as all those hidden emotions just bursted and she walked away. He stood numb for a moment, it hurt him, her acquisitions as well as the outburst of her feelings. Slowly walking towards the balcony, he stood there gazing at the stars, his inner demons didnât let him conceal his past memories. Gently squeezing his eyes as tears oozed out from them. Few minutes later he composed himself, determined to meet his twin. He stood near the door, silently peeping inside. Veer lay there on the bed with his eyes partially shut.
PRECAP:
âAbb mein yahin rahoonga aap ke saath...I mean aap sab ke saath, hamesha hamesha keliye. Mehak kya tum meri hospital ki interios design karogi?(Now, I will be living here, along with all of you. Mehak would you do the honour of designing the interiors of my hospital?)â....Veer smiled gleefully while forwarding his palm towards her for a hand shake. Mehak stood frozen for a moment.
