She has the elusive X factor about her! It could be because of her perfect smile, her lissome figure or her beautiful face.
Yami Gautam sits serene, clad in a blue top and white jeans that show off her figure to advantage on the sets of Deepan's Hero.
The law student, who is making her debut in Mollywood, is definitely a familiar face to telly viewers who have seen her in Hindi soaps like Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kum on Colors, the Fair and Lovely ad and a reality show Meethi Choori No 1. Yami has also worked in a Tollywood and Punjabi movie and has an upcoming Bollywood film.
What has Yami excited currently is her role as superstar Gauri Menon in Hero opposite Prithviraj. She expands, "I play this superstar with no starry tantrums who is very composed and charming and is a character that normal girls can relate to. I worked with Prithvi in a commercial earlier (Kalyan) and that could be the reason I got the role.''
Yami opines that competition is universal but it is not right to have a competitive streak going on 24x7. She is very focused when it comes to films and holds her own views but disappointments in filmdom are common.
Her way of dealing with these? "Failures are important because those are the stepping stones to success. What I should not lose sight of is consistency of actions and thoughts. I move at my own pace and at the end of the day give courtesy to time and faith in the Almighty. I have not yet faced disappointments and try to surround myself with positive people.''
Exposure in the name of 'demands of the role' is a clich now. "Glamour and exposure is more of a personal opinion. I come from Chandigarh with middle class traditional values but am sensible enough to judge the requirements of exposure in a script. A bold scene shot by very genuine set of directors will never look crass.''
Her tinkling laughter rings out when she says, "I wanted to be an IAS officer and I am in films. It is just a matter of chance!''

So, have you seen this girl somewhere? Well, if you stop scratching your head, you would realise she is the Fair & Lovely girl who pops up on your TV screen every now and then. Though we aren't sure how many girls turned fairer by using the cream, it definitely changed one girl's life. And Chandigarh-girl Yami Gautam isn't denying that the commercial proved as a launching pad into Bollywood.
Set to make her big debut with Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor, Yami remains grounded and tells Daily Life about her first movie and more. "I am playing a Bengali girl who falls for a Punjabi boy," she informs.
Even though she is playing the female lead in the movie, grabbing the role was no cakewalk for her. The casting director was sure of her talent, but her looks… that was a problem. "It took several screen tests and make-up sessions to ensure that I am their Ashima Roy. You know, make-up plays a big role in creating a real character. They wanted a typical Bengali look."
The movie, she says, is more than a typical love story. It has a bigger social message to give away, of sperm donation. "The movie will for sure educate our countrymen that there is nothing wrong in donating sperms," says Yami.
John Abraham's debut production Vicky Donor's male protagonist is Ayushman Khurrana, also from Chandigarh. "Working in a film with someone from your own city is amazing. The movie became all the more fun because of that," smiles Yami. "However, it was purely a co-incidence that we landed up in the same movie," she clarifies.
Like any other kid, she too dreamt of becoming an actor. But dreams change as you grow up, don't they? As a law student pursuing honours in Law from Panjab University, most of her time went into studying. "I am a very simple girl, non-controversial and extremely obedient," laughs Yami. Entering films was never on her agenda, they just happened. But, yes, while making her way through a daily soap, she wasn't denying herself a chance to do films either.
"I couldn't relate to the saas-bahu sagas, loud make-up and weeping. Thankfully, my show on Colors, Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, was none of that and the moment it took off into that direction, the show was called off," says the actress for whom content is the priority, be it films or TV.
At present, busy shooting for a Malayalam movie, Hero, Yami is open to working in other languages as well. "It is absolutely fun exploring a new industry. The work pattern is completely the same, it's only the language that differs."
But how does she manage dialogues of a language totally new to her? "Believe me, Malayalam is the most difficult of languages. But, I am managing it pretty well," her voice reflecting a sense of achievement.
And yes, before signing off, Yami lets us know how much she is missing the winters in Chandigarh.
