Part-38
âUncle ne phirse daanta?â Nisha passed her handkerchief to Rishav .Rishav nodded and wiped away his eyes and nose. âThappad bhi mila hai?Apne gaal dikha .âNisha cupped Rishavâs face and inspected keenly. There were faint marks of fingers. Her poor âgadhaâ has been slapped hard. Nisha knew it hurts much when slapped hard; though she had only been slapped that hard in two three instances. But later her mother had made up by cooking several of her favourites. Her Papa has never slapped her, though he had been angry with her ;once in the past. But Rishavâs father,Raunak Uncle never made up to him. He slapped or scolded Rishav for not doing well in exams or playing any mischief on someone. It was only Nisha, who knew how badly Rishav wanted a father like her Papa who loved her so much. Can they exchange parents like cookies packets in stores?
âMoti! Papa jaldi jaldi bol diye.Mujhe thik se samjhun isse pehle worksheet de diye.Mujhe ghar wapas nahin jaana.â Rishav sobbed again and Nisha felt utterly miserable. Along with Nirupama ,her parents were away from her then. She didnât know how to help him.He was scared and looked terrible. His father has also gone away to office leaving Rishav with her family.Rishav didnât want to go back and she perfectly agreed that he should not.God knows how many more slaps he would receive.Problem was who would convince Raunak tolet Rishav stay at her home? Permissions! How she hated that thing.Canât they both just do what they wanted.Stay together whenever they wanted, can go together anywhere.May be when they grow up like her parents. But for now they needed some elder for permission and to convince Raunak.
âNishu!Rishu! Aa jao bachon.Bhagwan jhooth na bulaye! tum logon ka pizza table pe hai.â Chachiji called both and the excitement of Pizza brightened both the fallen faces. âWow! Itna sara cheeseâŚMain to pura khatam kardunga.â Rishavâs mouth watered. âNani! Mujhe aur ek piece do.Yeh gadha mujhe ek bhi piece nahin dega.Motu gadha!â Nisha showed her tongue to Rishav andRishav knew it was time for giving back. â Tu moti!â Rishav teased, showing back his tongue and quickly lifting a piece of delicious looking Pizza.
Naina sat at the dining table, eating the humble dinner while her whole mind concentrated upon the happenings of evening. Unmindful of what she had been eating, she chewed a green chilli mistakenly.Coughing hard, she realized she needed water.Quickly she moved to the kitchen, opened the fridge and gulped some cold water. She berated herself for being unmindful and messing up .Her eyes then fell on the fridge magnet. She never had seen it before.Seemed like Namrata got it personalised from the recent shopping spree. It was a pink coloured fridge magnet with Sameer and Naina inscribed on it.She smiled contently with Namrataâs unconditional love for both of them.
She was in no mood to eat more. She peeped into Ramdhariâsroom. He was having his meal while his portable radio was playing songs from radio station.Naina didnât want to burden him and quickly she did all theutensils. It felt so like her home back at Almora.Doing each and every bit of work herself.Even running behind Nisha amidst washing utensils had itâs own fun.Nisha!...She gasped. She hadnât called her child since 2 days. All thanks to Varsha and Sudip, she has remain greatly preoccupied. The least she wanted to bewas to end up being an uncaring mother.
She rushed upstairs ,into their room. She saw the door of Nanajiâs room still closed and a small ray of light peeking out from the doorâs underneath. She concluded that the discussion between Sameer and Nanaji was still on.She was apprehensive of something else coming their way to disrupt the new found equilibrium in their lives. And soon she remembered her immediate work.Calling Nisha.
âBhagwan jhooth na bulaye!Yeh phone ki ghanti ko abhi bajna tha.â Bela spoke annoyed and left her kitchen cleaning work to attend it.Shehad mentally noted to give her piece of mind to the impatient caller. She picked up the receiver in haste, âBhagwan jhooth na bulaye!Landphone pe call kiye ho.Insaan chalke aayega ,udke nahin. Kis baat ki jaldi hai waise tumhe?âChachaji looked surprised at Belaâs reproach with such a loud voice. She seemed pissed off with the caller.âChachiji!Naina bol rahi hun.Kya baat hai? Aap pareshan lag rahi ho.Sab thik hai na?â Naina sensed the frustration and tiredness in Chachijiâs voice. She might have been away from home for long years yet she knew each of them since her childhood. Immediately , a brainwave passed through Naina.Did Nisha trouble Chachiji? Was she ill again?
âTu kaise samabhal leti hai yeh dono bandar ko?â Chachiji said,as she pulled a nearby chair and plopped on it; tired.Naina instantly realised Rishav and Nisha have teamed up and have troubled Chachiji. She just wanted to know what mischief bothhave played. âKya kiya hai dono ne? Nisha hai ?â Naina asked, and more than the idea of scolding Nisha for anything ,she wanted to hear her childâs voice. She doubted if she could ever love any one other like Nisha.Nisha not only had spell over her life, she was her entire universe, her heart, her soul.
Chachiji put down the receiver and went inside Nainaâs room. She saw Nisha and Rishav engrossed in completing colouring of basket and fruit drawing.Chachiji smiled how Nisha, just like Naina in her childhood, was guiding Rishav to choose correct colours from the crayon box.Just like seven year old topper Naina guided a sleepy Preeti .âNishu!Naina ki phone hai.Aaja baat karle pehle.â Chachiji called.Nishaâs eyes twinkled to a shade similar to the twinkling brightest star outside. She left the crayon, jumped over the spread mess of books and copies and reached for the phone.
âMummaaaa!â Nisha sang exuberantly , instantly bringing smile to Nainaâs face. She wished to see Nisha at once and engulf her baby in a tightest hug. âNisha!Mera bacha.Kaisi hai? Kya kar rahi thi?â Naina asked planting a kiss to the receiver. âMain thik hun.Colour kar rahi thi.Aap kab aaoge wapas?ââ Nisha asked counting the number of days she had been away from her parents. âBahut jaldi.Thoda kaam baaki hai.Khana kha li?â Naina asked, making her comfortable on the bed. âMumma! Nani sirf tinde hi banati hai .Aaj Pizza bana tha.Humne itna khaya itna khaya ki Nani banate banate pareshan ho gayi.Hehhee.âNisha giggled and Naina joined. âBadmas!Nani ko tang kar li.Abhi Nani mujhe daantegi.â Nisha listened and with a dramatic tone voiced â Aise? Bhagwan jhooth na bulaye Naina! Teri Nisha badi naughty hai.â Naina laughed and soon the phone receiver went in roundsto Rishav;who complained about his father,Chachaji who complained about slippery hilly roads and Chachiji who fretted over the working mechanism of Microwave oven where she nearly burnt pizzas.
A while later,Naina sat at her desk trying to put words to the scenes conjuring in mind. The publisher had sent a message asking for the progress and she was slightly guilty for not progressing at a pace she was expected to.However, she cleverly convinced and burrowed some more time. At this intersection of life, she had to balance both her beloved things. The writing career and the family that has now extended .
âIt rained incessantly and shops were closed as precaution.âA manly voice read out the line making Naina jump in her chair. There was an impressive glint in the dark, magnetic pair of eyes. âNaya chapter?â Sameer asked and Naina nodded like an obedient kid.Her entire being suddenly shivered with goosebumps as Sameer âs gaze travelled over the page and then on her.âKaisa hai?â Naina couldnât control the mess of anxiety and excitement.
Sameer grinned at the way Naina looked at him with the anticipation of some fair feedback. He had the sudden urge to shower kisses on her.Her innocence has always bowled him, dating back even to the day they had nearly collided in the school corridor. For a miniscule of second he had forgotten his mission. He was caught in an unexplainable whirlpool. The nameless emotions ,the name less relation.Little did he realise that chance twirling was stepping stone of finally twirling around the holy altar of marriage fire.. Indeed, strange are ways of life and destiny.
Coming to present,he lifted another pen and signed âInterestingâ. Naina giggled the way her husband was trying to be Editor yet failing to act like same. But the review was an enough push to quickly complete the plot progression she had in mind. He showed her thumbs up before busying himself in some task that were at hand.
Ramdhari rushed up the stairs and was surprised to find the door of his Sameer Babaâs room ajar.It was close to midnight hour, the entire colony was already on bed or some were preparing for a good nightâs sleep after having late dinners. In a quandary of thoughts, whether to barge through open door or give a call from behind the doors, he sneakily looked inside. The sight made him smack his head and also his respect doubled. His Naina bhabhi was at her desk, scribbling something on paper with a rapt attention. While Sameer was busy exhausting himself with minute checking of some files. Ramdhari slightly knocked the door to attract all attention.
âSameer Baba!Aapko Nanaji bula rahein .â Ramdhari informed, watching a hint of fright travel to Sameerâs forehead. âAbhi? Nanu soye nahin?â Sameer asked worriedly, quickly thrusting the files inside. Naina took a voluntary pause from her writing and helped in arranging the files in order. Turning around she asked to Ramdhari;âMain bhi chalun?â .Ramdhari didnât know the answer.Nanaji only had asked him to call Sameer. He had not mentioned about Naina. With confusion lingering he nodded in negation. Naina felt unsettled a bit yet decided to continue herwriting.
âTu chal, main aata hun.â Sameer ordered Ramdhari and closed the door behind him. âSameer!Kuch serious hai kya? Sham ko bhi Nanaji bulaye the aur ab itni raat ko.Tension ho rahi mujhe.Main bhi chalti hun saath mein.â Naina said ,getting up to change into some decent salwar suit. âSham ko Ahmedabad ki factory ke baare mein baat hui thi. Serious to kuch nahin tha.Lekin ab kyun bulaye hein? Wo bhi akele mein? Main dekh ke aata hun.â He cupped her face ,caressed it slowly filling a sense of assurance inside her. âTum so jao.Main aata hun.â He said and left unlocking the door. She would wait, she grunted in silent protest.
Nanaji stood infront of an open wardrobe ,silently caressing a paper packet in hand. Sameer entered to meet the sight and urgently asked ,âNanu!Aap thik toh ho na? Sar dard?Chakkar? Doctor ko bulaun? â He quickly checked Nanajiâs temperature and pulse to calm his own anxious nerves.
âNahin nahin beta.Main thik hun.Tere liye ek surprise hai.â
âSurprise?â Sameer looked up in confusion as Nanaji brought forward the packet .âYeh Saree.Yeh tere liye.â Sameer took the packet and was confused seeing the content of packet.
âMere liye? Nanu!Saree Naina pehenti hai main nahin.â He said trying to draw conclusion of Nanaji gifting him saree.Did it hold any symbolic meaning?
âArey akal ke dushman.Yeh Saree tere liye nahin hai.Naina ke liye hai.â Nanaji chuckled and brought all confusion brewing in Sameerâs mind to end.âNaina ke liye hai?â A curve of smile soon adorned his lips, already imagining Naina draping the Saree withthe silver earrings dangling from her ears, enhancing her beauty to a degree.
âHaan beta.Yeh koi aisi waisi saree nahin hai.Khas saree hai.Teri Nani ki saree hai.â The gleeful tone of Nanaji suddenly turned sentimental. The emotions in Nanajiâs voice managed to grip Sameer along with.âNani ki saree?â
âHaan jab pehli baar usse dekha tha tab usne yehi saree pehni thi.Aur uski iccha thi ki yeh Saree teri honewali dulhan ko dun.Yeh saree Naina ko dena aurusse kehna yeh saree mamuli nahin hai..ek ashirvad hai.Mera aur tere Nani ka.De dena usse.â
âThank you Nanu.â Sameer hugged Nanaji with exuberant happiness. This was not only a gift it was so much more.A treasure.A blessing in disguise.
âThank you mat bol..bas wo Ahmedabad ki factory ka soch le thoda.Zindagi ka koi bharosha nahin hai.Main bas chahta hun ki tu ek baar Ahmedabad jaake factory walon se mil le.â Nanajiâs words had a profound plea.He was suddenly worried about the growing distances between familiar ties, and his own failing health. He knew Sameer was not much interested in business yet expected him to at least be familiar with people and process,so that in later times it does not seem to be an unchartered terrain for him.
Sameer understood the gloom in Nanajiâs voice. He has been very clear about his decision in not heading any business outlets. Not that he was fearful of being competent enough but he feared that he might not be able to deliver with the same passion and determination his Nanu put in the business. But now he could not disappoint the one who in turn never ever disappointed him.âNanu! Bachpan se leke aaj tak aapne meri har zid puri ki hai. Pehli baar aapne mujhse kuch umeed ki hai.Main mana nahi karunga.â
âJaa beta.Raat kaafi ho gayi hai.â Nanaji planted a kiss on Sameerâs forehead and wished him the best.
âSameer!Nanaji kyun bulaye the? Sab thik hai na?Tum muskara kyun rahe ho?â Naina rushed to the door, concerned deeply. She was nothing but plain worried. Sameer decided to needle her a bit. He smiled all the way to his desk ,confusing and annoying Naina to bits.
âKyun muskurate acha nahin dikhta?â
âTum na.Main itni tension mein hun aur tumhein mazaak sujh raha.Batao na kya baat hui.â She was impatient and his indirect answers were surely not helping.Since the time he had left, she was calculating all possible things that can seemingly go wrong.
âBaat to kaafi hui phir Nanaji ne yeh diyeâ He finally offered her the packet. She could not contain her curiosity and unwrapped it taking to bed. The ornate saree caught whole of her attention.âItni sundar saree.Mere liye? â
âNahin.Wo to uske liye diye hein jo meri raaton ki neend aur dil ki chain sab chura liya hai.â Sameer said with smirk inching a bit closer to her. Naina blushed into shades of pink oleanders. âUske liye jo bahut khubsurat hai.â She gripped the fabric of Saree hard as he further inched forward to her.
âUske liye jisko main yeh Saree mein dekhna chahta hun.â He was just centimetres away from closing the distance when she playfully asked âAur koun hai yeh khubsurat ladki?â
Sameer smirked. This game was fun.Not everyday he gets a chance to pull her legs.âWo hai..wo hai..â The deliberate pause in his voice however quickened her heartbeats. She was sure the anticipation of hearing her name from him had made her heart skip few beats. âVarsha.â
âVarsha! â Naina was confused whether Ramdhari dropped the glass in kitchen or it was her insides that broke. How darehe joke about that venomous snake.âToh jao usko do.Mera time kyun waste kar rahe ho.â She was angry.
âArre..Itna gussa.Ya kahun to itni jalan..â Sameer laughed and Naina stumped her foot in pure displeasure and Sameerâs untimely kidding around.
âMain na aaj keh deti hun.Bhul karke bhi wo chudail, dayan ki naam mere saamne mat lena. Aur uss chudail se gussa nahin hun main, nafrat hai mujhe. Badi aayi mujhe batane meri pati ki history, geography.â Huffing, she got up from bed and went to her desk to pick up her favourite novel. She turned around to look Sameer grinning sheepishly.
âAur tum na jyada daant mat dikhao. Phir se uska kabhi naam liya na gala daba dungi tumhara.â She inched forward and fakely strangled him ,asking not to take her threatening lightly.
Sameer slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her close to his frame.âBas Naina Maheshwari ki yehi gusse wali ada pe to yeh Sameer Maheshwari fida hai.â He kissed her forehead just below her hairline. The most gentlest way. Her cheeks now adorned the deepest colour of blush. All resentment vanishing into thin air.No person now could come in between them.He had given her this trust through his irrepressible love.Their love was no ephemeral entity to fall into claws of vile people and transient times.
â Kya kar rahe ho..Darwaza khula hai.â She meekly protested as his fingers freed her long hair from the tight clutcher.Bunching the tangled mess of hair,he pulled her mouth to his. Seeing a little worry in her eyes,he swore , âKoi nahin aane wala..Nisha bhi nahin hai ki bhag ke aa jaayegi.â His hushed voice made her quake like the fragile leaf amidst strong winds. Her senses were on fire already. She clutched his shirt to keep herself from crumbling away.
âSameer.â
âSshh!Kitna bolti ho tum.â He silenced her aligning his warm lips over her soft petals.Sensual to passionate ,the kiss turned senseless and utterly blissful with each passing second.
Nanaji sat in his wooden folding chair with the crisp newspaper in hand and the age old radio playing Akashvani .Ramdhari serves some biscuits along with tea, mentally rebuking the neighbourâs cat which had created an early morning commotion in kitchen. Sameer jogged inside the gates, trying to clear his mind.More like calming his troubled self. The morning had already turned bitter for him for two reasons.A bitter mail in his inbox and the bitter tea at his favourite tea stall. The Royal Academy of Music wanted to conduct an inquiry before forwarding Scholarships and grants.Though Sameer was sure of the success in terms of the transparency yet internal power politics was too hard to ignore. He was sure of his convictions but not of others.
Naina descended the stairs accompanied by giggles of Namrata.Sameerâs eyes shifted focus from mobile while Nanajiâs eyes held brewing bubbles of emotions.Draped in the Orange saree lined with Zari border of emerald green,Naina held a pooja thali in hand.Namrata held two wallets, which hinted they were going to temple. Sameer âs heart held a sense of immense love and gratitude for the lady in orange. She looked as beautiful as his Nani in her younger times. His eyes shifted to Nanaji. There were very few occasions when Sameer had actually seen Nanaji moved to verge of happy tears.
âNanaji!â Naina pauses and touches Nanajiâs feet. Nanaji lifted his hand in blessing, softly patting with choicest wishes. âAaj Sameer ki Nani bahut khush hogi.â Nanajiâs voice choked, with hard hitting nostalgia of his beloved partner and happiness of Sameer finally finding the right one alike him. He was finally at peace.
âBoli thi na Bhabhi..Kayamat lag rahi ho.Bhaiya ko dekho.Aise muh khule rakhe hein ki makhi ghus jaayegi.â Namrata nudged Naina, while Nainaâs cheeks coloured with the pair of eyes caressing over the silk saree and her silk flesh. If it would not have been for Ramdhariâs timely call for breakfast,Naina wondered what more thoughts could have raced through Sameerâs mind. His gaze was something that have always skewed her sense of time.Be it the angry gaze he held for Pankaj on first day of school or the bewitched gaze when both of their eyes had met for the first time. She had never seen how the heat orb of Sun feels like or how the silver orb of moon looks from near, yet she has seen two black orbs that held so many layers,so many emotions ,so many adventures that she fell in love for them and the one who they belonged to irrevocably.
The day had passed smoothly for each except for one.
âNisha! Kya baat hai my Rockstar.Aisi udasi kyun?â Chachaji asked as he saw a gloomy looking Nisha disembarking from the school bus.Though Nisha had been occasionally sad missing her parents on Parents Teacherâs Meeting or the other day she had fallen in field, hurting her knee. But she looked very upset and that worried Chachaji a bit.âBhagwan jhooth na bulaye! Aap aise hi ghabra rahein.Bachi hai. Ladhai jhagda ho gayi hogi kiske saath.â Chachiji tried easing Chachajiâs tense demeanour.Chachaji was also worried for the fact that the chirpy Nisha was unusually quiet. After a lot of mulling,he decided to find out what troubled the little mind.Even if it turns out to be a silly fight over tiffin full of tinde or new set of colour pencils. But he would definitely hear.
âAaj kuch homework nahin di hai Miss.â Nisha informed seeing Chachaji enter her room. Chachaji came to her room everyevening to help her with homework and tell her stories ranging from South Indian Clever jester Tenalirama to Akbarâs clever jester Birbal. There were also stories about kings like Rama and Ravana ,friendship tales of Krishna and Sudama and a lot more. âAaj koi kahani nahin sun na Nisha rajkumari ko?â Chachaji asked and that was the limit.Nisha leapt over Chachaji breaking into sobs.
âSameer! Nikita Didi aur Sharad Bhaiya ki barshi hai. Tum chutti le lena institute se.â Naina informed Sameer as he changed from his formals to comforting night wears. The day was productive in several terms and he was satisfied. Also there was a piece of happy news he wanted to share with Naina. But the news stalled him.
âKab hai? Almora mein karenge?â
âIss Somvar ko. Aaj tak Almora mein hi ki hun.Tumhein kaam hai kya?â Naina asked despite mentally apprehending that he would be absorbed in lot of professional commitments. She had learnt about the enquiry committee from Namrata and how it was an added burden on the institution and officials. Sameer however had seen the expectation in her eyes and had felt a feeling of âhaqâ of her over him and his time.He didnât want to disappoint her.
âKaam to hai. Par main manage kar lunga.â Sameer assured yet suddenly a thought crept behind his mind.âWaise Almora mein karogi toNisha ko kya bolenge?â He asked thoughtfully and Naina had the answer ready.Unlike for Sameer,it has been a yearly tradition for her since the painful demise of Nikita and Sharad.Over the years she has managed to keep Nisha away from the bitterest and saddest truth of their lives.
âUsse bolti hun Bhagwan ji ki Birthday hai isliye Mandir mein khana dete hein.Ab isse jyada kya bataungi?â She was always held in high praises for being truthful in school. The first time she had lied was for Sameer. It had filled her with enormous guilt. Her inner conscience had berated her.Yet she never realized how lies had formed an integral part of her life. The times she had lied for meeting Sameer, the number of times she had lied about Sameer .And when she thought with Sameer going away from her life, she will finally be able to close the Pandora box of lies. But NO.Life had another twisted tale ready for her.Nishaâs growing innocent questions have made her say nothing but lies.No more she called them lies but well spun stories enough to appeal Nishaâs curiousity. Many a days her conscience has questioned her, has made her uneasy but she has decided to be little selfish and liar if that ensures Nishaâs unbridled love for her.
Sameer gave a sigh and said ,âSahi kar rahi ho.Kabhi kabhi bahut bura lagta hai uske liye. Main to soch bhi nahin sakta ki agar tum na hoti to kya haal hota uss nanhi jaan ki.Isi liye mujhe bhagwan par se kabhi kabhi bharosa uth jaata hai.â He always had difficulty in understanding why the Supreme Lord,as everyone calls keeps a child away from his parents? Whatâs the fault of the child? To be born under faulty stars perhaps.
âNaina! Tum next month 18th ko free hogi?â Sameer decided to break the happy news seeing Naina coiling back into a shell of melancholy.Try hard he might be but some memories are etched forever.Such were the memories of Nikita and Sharad. Addingto it the sudden demise has surely been a bruising shock for Naina.
âHaan shayad. Kya baat hai?â Naina lifted herself from the novelâs page she was trying hard to concentrate upon.Mushy talks about the past would drive her to brink of tears and she least wanted Sameer to worry or fret tonight. It was better to distract herself and do something worthwhile.
âActually ek eventhai Paris mein.Soch raha tha tum aur Nisha bhi saath chalteâ Sameer said andawaited before revealing all other related details. Naina couldnât decide whether it was change of mood or change of mundane life to foreign vacation, her eyes sparkled with light of diamond.âParis! Wow.â However her excitement dampened a little as her eyes travelled to the desk calendar.â Plan to acha hai.Par mujhe thoda check karna hai.Nisha ki exams,wo Delhi kibook event, phir College..â Her voice trailed thinking of agendas pre- planned.
âKoi jaldi nahin. Apna time lo.â Sameer uttered pulling her into a loving embrace. As he planted a kiss on Nainaâs cheeks,he put another question.âNisha ko kab batayenge yeh barshi wali sach?â
Sameer saw the colour of blush adorning her cheeks were replaced by pale dreading in eyes.It was like she hated the question. She hated the very existence of the question. Crouching more closer in his embrace, she mumbled âNisha ko..Pata nahin. Darr lag raha.Agar humse muh fer li toh?â Her fear mirrored his fears. What if they lose Nisha with revelation of this truth?
âNisha!Ro kyun rahi hai beta.Kisine kuch kaha? Miss ne daanta kya?â Chachaji enquired as he held a hiccupping Nisha close to his heart. âNanu! Maine.. Wo apas mein aise maar pit karte to kya Sita Maiya ko dhund paate? Batao.â Chachaji asked wiping the fat tears rolling down Nishaâs cheeks.
â Par Hanuman ji ache the na.Wo kitna help kiye Ram ji ki.Par Nanu! Priya ne mujhe boli..mujhe boli..â Nisha broke into howl and cried bitterly.
âKya boli?â
âYehi ki meri Mumma Papa sachi wali Mumma Papa nahin hein mere.Meri koi aur Mumma Papa hein.Upar se bolti hai ki uski Mausi ne yeh sab uski Mummy ko bata rahi thi.âChachaji was aghast.Shock would be an understatement.Though it was not news for him,but he knew how it was a sharp blow to Nishaâs psyche. She was not supposed to know this at this stage. How were Sameer and Naina going to react to this? Most importantly how was he going to wipe out this entirely from Nishaâs mind. Distrust between parents and childâs relationship leads to utter toxicity and he can never let that happen.
(To Be Continued)
