Why now when you have managed to work in both mediums? "I have been combining TV and films for the last six to seven years. It's easier said than done. TV leaves you little or no time to do anything else. Last few months, I have done exciting work on TV as an actor and anchor, but the pace was so hectic that I lost out on good film projects," he says.
After Swabhimaan, it was Sarrkar that proved to be the turing point of his career. And, Viraasat just got him wider acceptance: "I am committed to Viraasat for 15 days in a month and the contract is renewable every six months. I have a good equation with Ravi Chopra and know that I have his support as long as I honour my commitment to the show. I will see it through, as I am not the kind to walk-out from a show. Besides, Viraasat is close to my heart because it has given me my first Best Actor Award." explains Roy.
"My films, Shootout At Lokhandwala and Delhi Heights, are complete. Dus Kahaniyan will wind up this month. I will begin work for Sanjay Gupta's Alibaugh in April. But these films are not the reason for me to quit. TV takes away 90 per cent of my time. I want to give the same amount of concentration and resilience to films that I have devoted to TV," says Roy.
Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena with Fardeen Khan and Koena Mitra was Roy's last release in June 2005. It is believed that Sanjay Gupta has offered Roy a substantial role in an upcoming film. But all he says is, "I am in talks with Mahesh Bhatt, Vikram Bhatt and Anurag Basu but so far, nothing is concrete." On his family's reaction to his decision, he says, "My brother Ronit is still to know this but he will be supportive. He is confident of the space I have created for myself. My wife Manasi is going to support me till I find work. This year is a huge year for us and I am hoping she finds success as a producer, so that even if my gamble fails, she will be earning to run the house," he laughs.
"Cinema will always remain my first love. I am very conservative in everything I do and this is the first risk that I'm taking in my life. I want to chase my dream,"affirms Roy.
But there is always a rider to such decisions. "If I am offered KBC after two years, I'd be foolish to refuse that," he ends.
