They are the backbone of any television production. They not only conceive award winning shows but also have the foresight to gauge their potential. They also provide the moolah that keeps these shows alive and kicking for years. In this column, we speak to some of the most vibrant producers who have made shows that have set trends in the television industry and try to find out what makes them tick!

Producer Ravi Chopra has made a difference, and we must say, with a big bang! The maestro has already carved a niche for himself in Bollywood, and now he promises to create the same magic with his grand and brand new show, Viraasat, on Star Plus. His new offering has created so much hype that we wonder what makes this daily soap so special! Tellychakkar.com's Riya V Anandwala sets off on a quest to meet Ravi Chopra on the sets of Viraasat. The outcome - a freewheeling chat with a down-to-earth man.

Viraasat is certainly different …
Of all the shows I have produced and directed in the past, Viraasat stands apart. It's a love story with family drama blended in it. It's a beautiful concoction of human emotions.

Viraasat has a film feel…
And it was a deliberate effort from our side. We have worked very hard in creating that setup. From giving each character a full dimension, the background score, the dialogues….everything has been thoughtfully done.

Television has evolved big time….
In the span of six years, I have seen television breaking many barriers. But somehow I am not really convinced with the way it has evolved. I am not saying that the serials today are absurd, but when I see the actors performing, they seem to be very illogical.

Sangeeta Ghosh was my only choice….
The moment the characters were sketched, the first name, the first soul, who came to my mind, was Sangeeta. I have been following her career so far, and I must say she is a very graceful actress. Her acting skills are very refined.

Direction tops my list…
When it comes to making a choice between producing and directing, the latter is what I'm passionate about. There is a lot to explore being a director as compared to a producer. There is always something new to do everyday.

But I'm not directing Viraasat…
Directing a daily is not at all an easy task. One has to keep a tab of so many things. You can't take up anything else if you are directing a daily. And in my case, I have films to look after. I'm currently busy with the Rani-John starrer, Babul, so direction is out of question.

Generally script demands a leap…
And the script of Viraasat is watertight. So the question of my show taking a leap doesn't arise. I don't see the crew and myself getting stuck anywhere in between.
