Thank God, I m back

With enough films and soaps, the stylish actor is on a role

This angry young man of the small screen is back in a warring family drama. But, this time not with the same Swabhiman! Yes! Rohit Roy is seen romancing Sangita Ghosh and anchoring in the musical talent hunt show.

Rohit admits all his movies failed but his off-and-on roles have kept him alive in the industry. "Swabhiman established me. It was an instant fame and everything was revolving around me. It was a very good training ground for me as I was very raw. But Sarkaar re-established me, thanks to wonderful scripts by Shobha Dey."

After Swabhiman, he signed all Bollywood offers he got and tried to shy away from small screen. "I always wanted to join cinema. My flicks failed but every film establishes you. I am waiting for that one good role that changes your life."

Rohit has four films in his kitty. He is doing Shivaji Ganeshan production's Delhi Heights starring Neha Dhupia, Jimmy Shergil and Om Puri. Then he is playing the main terrorist in Shoot Out in Lokhandwala based on longest encounter. "Das kahaniya comprising on ten different short stories with different scripts and directors. Then is the big one, Alibaug with Sanjay Gupta, which is a slice of a life film," he says.

Playing Raman Lamba in Ravi Chopra's Virasaat this is an intense romantic role amidst two families. "This mother of all soaps is like a film on small screen where centre thread is romance. It's like family is the cart and romance rope. The show has something for everyone."

But after a good start what took him so long to get going? "After Swabhiman I had no godfather. I signed everything I got but used to shy away from the small screen that created a vacuum. Big flicks, like Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina and Plan (with Sanjay Dutt) failed and when films fail then no one is with you."

Filling it for Shaan in SaReGaMaPa was a tough challenge for him. "I was very reluctant to do it as Shaan and this show are contemporary to each other but my wife motivated me. The show has been well received and I am getting lots of feedback and enjoying it," says Rohit and thanks God for his success.

Rohit admits influenced a lot with Big B, which showed in his acting too.

"Initially, yes. It was evident. As Swabhiman was a big success I also let what was coming from inside but lately I am very conscious."

Working with his wife Mansi is still a dream for him. "We had fun working in Nach Baliye but unfortunately, in soaps we yet come together. In Kkusum I made entry when Mansi was out of it," says Rohit.

Betting big on the two TV shows and four films Rohit feels this might be his turning point, which may lead to his ultimate dream — direction in films.
