I week later
Sanjana !..., Sanju !...where are you? Mr Agarwal was waiting impatiently for his daughter. "Why do girls always take so long to get ready " he mumbled to himself. Today was Sanjana's first day at the office. It was his idea. He couldn't bear to see her sad and alone in her room anymore. He decided it would be good for her to start a job with him at his company. If it could get her mind of Ajay for even a few minutes it was worth it. Sanjana didn't feel like going anywhere today but she didn't have the heart to disappoint her father. He was so worried about her. Who knows it might not be a bad experience. Staring at herself in the mirror she took in her reflection. No sari, sindoor or mangalsutra, instead she was wearing a navy blue pair of pants, pink chiffon blouse and a light blue cardigan with jewelry and shoes to match. She didn't look anything like she did a week ago, she was thinner and had visible dark circles around her eyes. Her eyes... no matter how much she tried her smile never reached them. There was no joy in them.. No light. Her joy was in another part of the city. She wondered how he was doing and against her better judgment, if he missed her as much as she missed him. She knew she should try to not think about him but... how do you tell yourself not to breathe. Taking a deep breath and one last look in the mirror to ensure nothing was out of place she walked out of her room.
Ajay was busy at work at his family's store. His website was officially launched and he was busy fine tuning and troubleshooting any problems that might come up. When he wasn't working on his project he helped out at the store with deliveries. His entire family had forgiven him and everything was back to normal at home. He kept telling himself that he should be happy... except he wasn't. Actually he was far from it. He smiled on the outside while his heart cried silent tears on the inside. When he wanted to feel close to her he would place his hand in his pocket where he kept her mangalsutra and for a moment he would feel better. " Ajay, could you please come here for a minute." It was Bushan who called him." Are you busy?"asked Bhushan..." No bhaiya, what can I do for you?"replied Ajay..." I have two urgent deliveries but they are on the opposite side of town. I would not be able to do both and deliver on time. Would you be able to make one of them for me?" Ajay nodded yes and Bushan told him to take anyone of the two bags on the counter, he just had to check with Amar before he left. He told him the addresses were in the bags. Ajay grabbed one of the bags and headed out. He got in his car and opened the bag to look at the address and then froze. "Agarwal industries. " He had not seen her father since the night sanjana was sick. The same night he insulted her. He looked at the name of the person the delivery was for and let out a sigh of relief. The sweets were not for Mr. Agarwal but someone else in the company, so if he was lucky he would not see his former sasurji. With that thought Ajay started his car and set out.
Sanjana had just spent her first morning at Agarwal Industries and she had to admit she enjoyed working. She made new friends and the amount of time in between thoughts of Ajay started increasing. She didn't work on the top floor with her father but on the third floor where she had her own cubicle amongst many other cubicles. Her boss on that floor was the finance manager and a good friend of the family, her uncle Patel or Sir when she was at work. She had just finished a report he had given her to do and was on her way to his office to deliver it. Ajay walked up to the security guard and enquired where he can find a Mr Gaurav Patel and that he had a delivery for him. The guard made a call and told Ajay to go to the third floor, finance department. Saying a thank you, Ajay proceeded to the elevator. Sanjana had just dropped off her report and was returning to her cubicle when her uncle told her he was expecting a delivery if she would collect it and bring it for him. He said the delivery man was on his way up. Nodding yes with a smile she walked along the corridor to the very end where the elevator was located. She heard the ding of the elevator doors and when they opened, she froze.
No...it can't be. I must me seeing things. Sanjana shut her eyes tight for a few moments and then opened them again. He was still there. Oh god what games are you playing with me? She thought to herself. He was as handsome as ever in his blue jeans, white shirt and navy blue jacket. Sanjana was finding it hard to breathe and she felt any resolve she had mustered so far start to unravel. She wanted nothing more than to run to him and wrap her arms around him. To feel what is was like to be in his arms, taking in his warmth, scent.. .the very essence that was him. NO! ...Stop this Sanjana, don't do this to yourself. He doesn't feel the same way. Giving herself a much needed pep talk, she took a deep breath, straightened her back and with every ounce of strength she can muster, she willed her facial features to not give away the storm that was brewing in her heart and walked the final few steps towards him.
Ajay felt his breath hitch when the elevator doors opened. There in front of him stood the sight his eyes had longed for all this time. All he saw at that moment was her. Everything and everyone faded into the background. He felt as if his heart would jump out of his chest and go to her on its own accord. She was beautiful. When was she not beautiful? Was she working here? He thought to himself. Ajay took in every inch of her, he could tell she had lost some weight and noticed the dark circles under her eyes. How he missed those eyes. His heart pounded uncontrollably in his chest as he saw her walk towards him.
"Hello Mr Pethewala", she greeted him with a slight edge in her voice, no smile or any sign of warmth visible on her face. "Hi", he replied , his voice filled with the guilt he felt. Is that for Mr Patel she said as she motioned toward the parcel in his hand. He simply just nodded. Thank you I will receive it for him. She took the package from his hand without directly looking at him. She couldn't risk looking into his eyes because she knew it would be too easy to get lost in them and he would see through her facade. As she turned to walk away she heard "Sanjana", oh how she loved the way he said her name, "are you ok? "Without turning around she said "yes, I am fine," and continued to walk away. She heard the doors open and then close. It was only then she ventured a look back...he was not there. All the flood gates opened at that point. She didn't care who saw, she couldn't stop her tears even if she wanted to. The emptiness was back, and the feeling was worst than before. "Oh god" she pleaded once more ..."help me please" she said with her eyes closed. It was then she felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to see her father, someone had called him. She launched herself in to his arms and willed him to take away her pain.
