JAL THE BAND:

Jal (Urdu and Persian: ??) (literally meaning 'water') is a Pakistani rock band founded by Goher Mumtaz

The original band members were Atif Aslam and Goher Mumtaz, but later Atif was replaced by Farhan Saeed and Aamir Sheraz plays the bass guitar. The band is among the first of contemporary Pakistani bands that fuse Urdu vocals with modern Pop

Goher Mumtaz - Lead Vocals, Guitarist, Lyricist, and Composer

Born under the ambitious star sign of Leo; 23 year old Goher Mumtaz surely lives up to reputation of a motivated; go-getting youth. He showcases his artistry as the multi-talented composer, guitarist, lyricist and singer. As a musician he is influenced by various styles of music; As a lyricist his writing is influenced by both personal and social themes reflective in our daily lives. He is an avid listener of all types of music from around the world; a songwriter who strives for a creative balance between lyrical content, melodic structure, and rhythm.

As a young child Goher practiced on a small keyboard that he received as a birthday gift. Restricted by his parents, Goher sold his bike to buy his first guitar at the age of 11. Thus began his ambitious journey to becoming one of the most sought after musicians of the country. Having acquired no formal training in music, Goher has strived hard through countless hours teaching himself not only how to playing the guitar, but to compose, write songs and sing.

Goher's life took an unexpected turn right after he took his Intermediate Exams. The accident had him bed-ridden for 6 long painful months. It was during this period that Gohar could devote his entire time concentrating on his music. From sleepless nights trying to grasp all the notes in a single song and re-producing them on his six-string, to coming up with compositions of his own; Goher's journey has been an exceptional one. He went on to wining countless singing competitions at his college and performing live at local concerts in various fast food restaurants around Lahore.

The turning point in Goher's life came with his composition of 'Aadat' the single that took the country by storm. With the formation of his band 'Jal' and a 10 track album to his credit Goher Mumtaz's journey has just begun.

Farhan Saeed Butt:

Farhan Saaed - Farhan Saeed Butt (Urdu: ????? ???? ??) is the 23 year old lead singer of the Pakistani band Jal. Born on September 14, 1984,
Farhan Saeed is a singer with a distinctive vocal style which combines a finely tuned mix of a classical touch and modern-contemporary liberated vocals Influenced by a sundry variety of artists ranging from Jagit Singh's Ghazals to Bryan Adams, System of a Down and Tool; Farhan's vocals present a gentle vulnerability and tenderness that he carries warmly through his songs. His love for music became increasingly apparent at the tender age of 6. While still an infant; Farhan spent hours absorbedly listening to his father and brothers practicing on their vocals and music under the guidance of Master Ijaz (a keyboard player and the brother of the well known musician Master Abdullah). By the time he was 9 Farhan was already singing along his father and brothers. Owing to his exceptional vocals and encouraged by Mater Ijaz and his family he started practicing on a regular bases at the age of 12. Up until his O' Levels from Crescent Farhan only sang among his family and friends. His greatest supports during this time were his two elder brothers; Salman Saeed who was a gifted pianist and Haroon Saeed; a talented vocalist. Backed by his family and inspired by his love for music Farhan continued working on his vocals relentlessly.

By 1999 as Farhan started his A' Levels from KIMS he started singing in front of capacity audience within the institute. He participated in a number of school organized events and on different occasions and was highly appreciated and encouraged by students and teachers alike. He went on to winning in numerous singing competitions and gained the experience and confidence to perform live flawlessly. In 2001 Farhan went on to FAST for his bachelors degree. At the same time he continued working on his vocals and often participated in competition held both in and off campus. In early 2004 he participated in another competition held in. It was here that Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi eP) and Sultan Raja (Bassist of Call) first spotted Farhan and were highly impressed by his vocals. The appreciation was a big boost for Farhan. In mid 2004 Sultan Raja introduced Farhan to Goher Mumtaz who was in search for a new voice for his band; taken aback by farhan's vocals, Goher offered him a place in Jal and the collaboration resulted in their debut album "Aadat."

Apart from Jal's debut hit single "Aadat" which was re-done in Farhan's vocals, he has to his credit 7 other tracks for the Jal's debut album which include "Rangon Main," "Ik Din Aaye Ga," "Lamhay," "Teri Yaad," "Manchala," "Har Jaga Hai Jal," and "Bikhra Hoon Main."

Shazi (AMIR SHERAAZ):

Shazi (Aamir) - Bass guitarist

Inspired by brilliant bassists like Jaco Pasterious, Bryan Collins, Bryan Collin, Billy Sheehan, Stuart Harm, Noel Benjamin and B.B King; Amir Sheraz is a God gifted bassist who's been playing since he was .. He started off strumming and experimenting with different tunes on his uncle's guitar while still a teenager. His thrust to improve led him to get formal training to play Bass Guitar from the Church he attended in 1995.

It wasn't until 1998 that Shazi stepped into the Lahore underground music scene professionally. He first collaborated with an underground band by the name of "Wet Metal." During this time he played in a number of underground gigs and local concerts playing bass. However after two years in 2000 Shazi parted ways with Wet Metal and joined "Jupitar." Shazi played with Jupitar for three years and by 2003 he started playing as a session player for various underground acts During the one and a half years he played as a session player for various artists and collaborated with Shehzad Hameed's band with whom he worked on a complete album. The collaboration with Shehzad Hameed's band exposed Shazi to the rock-band communities of Pakistan . Lol, come on guys! That video is a joke..it doesn't look even close to real. Since when did Youtube become a reliable source for news, anyways? πŸ˜‰
I LOVE JAL! And always will! I've become an even bigger fan of theirs after 'Boondh' which was BRILLIANT (even in comparison to 'Aadat', which was obvs a masterpieceπŸ˜›)!
(On a random side-note - on Jal's website and even on the bit posted here it says Jal is an Urdu/Persian word, but I thought it was a Sanskrit word? Like 'ganga-jal' etc?) πŸ˜•
