| Meera : I am in Dubai now! "Mulk ke baare mein koi nahin sochta," says Meera as she condones the emergency imposed in Pakistan and hails President Musharraf as the resident godfather. How is life in Pakistan now? I'm stuck in Lahore where I am shooting for my home production, Iqra. I'm based in Dubai now and have come to Pakistan to shoot for this television serial. What's your take on the imposition of emergency in Pakistan? The political system in Pakistan leaves much to be desired. I think President Pervez Musharraf has taken a good decision by imposing emergency. The excessive media hype was leading to all sorts of crimes. Even suicide bombers were getting so much of hype. Pakistan is a small country and yet there is so much of opposition to growth. See how people reacted when Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif came down to Pakistan. Every channel and newspaper went to town with those reactions. Needless to say, such reporting makes the ordinary citizen very depressed. We felt so insecure and unsafe. Nobody seems to think about the well-being of the country. Every opposition member, who has been lambasting the emergency, is actually concerned only with his own good. Mulk ke baare mein koi nahin sochta. Now is the time to rule with an iron hand. Dande se hi log theek hone wale hain. Imran Khan is a good and sincere person. But I think it's wrong when he starts mudslinging against other political leaders. Why even get into unmasking people when the need of the hour is unity? Have you been in touch with Shoaib Akhtar recently? Oh! Shoaib. He is my neighbour in Lahore. I met him recently and I know for a fact that Shoaib is not interested in films right now. Cricket is his priority. He is getting mature by the day. He told me that now he wants to be more in control of his anger. Do you think the Indo-Pak cricket series should continue under this condition? Of course, it should. Stopping a series won't help in improving the internal conditions of Pakistan. When do you come to India? I think I'll be stuck in Lahore till December 15. Now, I've got a Canadian passport that will help me to work anywhere in the world. I plan to come to India in January. My film, Simran, where I play a character that's roughly based on Ash's life, should be released soon. Next in line, I have a Mahesh Bhatt film titled Shohrat — The Dark Side of Fame. I will be playing the role of an actor. As far as I know, the film is supposed to star Emraan Hashmi and Irrfan Khan. How long do you think this emergency should continue? Forever… Or at least for another two or three years.— |
