CLEAN SLATE
The only noise was of the machine displaying the patient's heartbeat. The zig zag design went up and down where the peaks sometimes appeared as Mount
Everest or as foothills. The right hand made a tiny movement in the fingers
but there were no other movements from the rest of the body as it had been
dead for the past few weeks.
When the patient first arrived at the hospital, his body appeared with more
bullets than flesh. His breathing was very low, his eyes were barely open and
his head was sliced. The body was found astray the sea near the fish
market. They had been successful in removing all the bullets but were unable
to revive him to consciousness. He slipped into a coma.
A petite nurse entered the room. Her hair was long and black tied up
on the oval face. She came there to change his dressing and his clothes
and got knocked back into the side table as it was the first time his eyes had
opened.
Later on the day the doctor examined the patient's eyes. 'Look at his eyes!"
there was surprise in his voice, 'a moment ago they were grey as cables of
steel but now they're hazel'.
The nurse looked closer and saw a blink 'what does this mean doctor?'
'It means that our visitor has been born,' he seemed pleased as if he had
received an award, 'I think u should inform them.'
Few hours later the ICU had been filled with the Mumbai police, officers
gathered near the patient's room area.
The doctor was in his office with all the reports, laid out ready. Three
weeks ago when the half dead man had arrived under his care, he had
believed that luck alone would be able to save him. The heart was nearly
punctured and the head was severely damaged but now he was confident
that the patient would recover.
'Doctor Mathur?' A tall well built man with aquiline features stepped into
his office. 'I'm ACP Rathod Crime Branch Mumbai.' After revealing his
badge he sat down opposite him.
'Sir the patient you had brought in has recovered from the coma. These
tests inform us that the condition of his heart has improved but'' he
handed him a file, 'I conversed with him and found something which won't
be good news.'
The officer looked questionably at the doctor. 'Are you saying that
he won't survive?'
'He will survive because the real danger has passed.'
'Then has he lost his ability to talk?'
'Let's say that he can't speak much at the moment. But that's normal. The
abnormal thing is that he doesn't know anything.'
'Explain to me properly.'
'What I mean is that he doesn't remember he was brutally shot and crashed
his head against a car. The patient had suffered such a traumatic
experience it's possible to repress such memory but his long term
memory is of concern.' Mathur put up CT scans of the patient. 'The heavy
blow that he got from the crash damaged a part of his brain due to which
he has developed amnesia. This is a temporary condition where the
memory is disturbed. In this case the patient is suffering from retrograde
amnesia, where the sufferers find it hard to remember anything before an
incident has taken place. I asked him over and over again but there was
blank. Some people don't ever retrieve back the memories and some
luckily do in due course.'
The officer paced up and down. 'You're aware that this patient can
be very dangerous because we have not much information about him except
for his ID badge. He is an army officer but which regiment and why was
he shot? What if he is a spy and is in an army get up?'
The doctor nodded, 'your point is valid but all these tests refer to only one
thing.'
'Do the tests again, I'm not convinced.' Rathod left the room.
The patient looked around the room. Nothing made any sense. There was a
mirror on the right side of his bed in which he examined his face. Huge
hazel eyes stared back at him. His nose was round and his lips were thin
and dry. Why couldn't he remember the face in front of him?
Rathod burst in with the intention to explode, but he gradually relaxed,
'the doctors tell me you don't remember anything, but the look in your eyes
is telling me that there's more to this story then put.'
The amnesia patient looked confused and simultaneously felt intimated by
Rathod.
'You might fool everyone else but you can't escape me. If I find out
you're nothing more than the filth of this country then it's my job to get rid of
it.' Do I make myself clear Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat?
'I don't understand what you're saying.' Raj spoke in a frail voice.
A smile developed on the officer's face. 'If you think that by behaving in
such a way you'll be able to get out of here unharmed then you're
under a misconception. I'm not going to let you go after you're in my
clutches.' He left.
The patient tried to concentrate to make an association with the name
Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat but there were no results. He checked his
wounds in the mirror. He noticed that he had been shot near the heart and
just above his abdomen. Why was he shot? The more he thought his head
became even heavier as if someone had put heavy weights. His vision
started to blur until there was blank.
'You can't really expect me to believe this.' ACP was still not convinced.
'All of this was done in front of you. I consulted with my colleagues who
came up with the same declaration that this patient is certainly
suffering from retrograde amnesia.
Once back into the hospital corridor, Rathod thought about the reality of the
situation. Perhaps he wasn't a criminal and really was an officer but then
why wasn't his regiment searching for him. It had been three weeks. If he
really did loose his memory then perhaps he could get a chance to start
over with a clean slate.
