I think that most songs are raga-based at one literal level. What makes the difference between a random song and one that we would consider in this category is that the choice of raga is conscious (which we can't know about) and that this is reflected in the use of the raga through the song, in the way that is consistent with the raga's own nature. Ragamalikas too reflect this conscious choice because the transitions between ragas have to be consistent and compatible. I can usually hear the transition but couldn't tell you from which one to which one. Sigh.

agree with u here ... most songs are raga based ... even the latest ones and not necessarily the ones we are discussing here ... and yes the ones listed here are more often consciously based on a raga ...

abt identifying the raga ... what i have seen is that it comes naturally to some people and u neednt be musically trained for it... being a good listener can do wonders ... on the other hand there are ppl who have learnt a good deal but cant identify ragas ... i too was in that category a few yrs ago ... hv put in some conscious effort in that direction and can now thankfully identify basic ragas 😊

another point is the raga in question ... some ragas have such well defined lakshanas or pakads taht its hard to miss them ... des is one of them ... its hard to miss and is the easiest raga to identify bcos the basic swar samudaya used in most filmi songs based on des is the same and very very familiar ... ofcourse there are the complex ragas as well whch are very close to some others and to identify such ragas u do need a very fine ear and maybe training as well ...

hindi film music has used some ragas more than others, some of these are yaman, pahadi, shivaranjani, bhairavi, bhimpalasi, bhupali (mohanam)

i also suggest rajan parrikar's articles for more understanding on ragas and how they can be identified... it is beautifully explained with lots of illustrations and examples ...
