Lailat al Miraj and Lailat al Baraat this august!
Saturday 11 August
Lailat al Miraj

The festival celebrates the Prophet Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Jerusalem in a single night. From Jerusalem he ascended into heaven, where he met the earlier prophets, and eventually God.Lailat al Miraj (27 Rajab)

The revelation of Salat took place on Lailat al Miraj

The night journey and ascent of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and the revelation of Salat.

The festival is celebrated by telling the beautiful story of how the Prophet Muhammad was visited by two archangels while he was asleep, who purified his heart and filled him with knowledge and faith.

The Prophet travelled from Mecca to Jerusalem in a single night on a strange winged creature called Buraq. From Jerusalem he ascended into heaven, where he met the earlier prophets, and eventually God.

During his time in heaven Muhammad was told of the duty of Muslims to recite Salat (ritual prayer) five times a day.

Shabe e Baraat

August 28th 2007 is The Night of Forgiveness (Lailat-ul-Barat), also known as Shab e Barat. It takes place two weeks before Ramadan. Muslims spend the night in prayer seeking God's guidance and forgiveness for their sins.

Muslims are followers of Islam, (the will of Allah (Arabic for God)). Muslims means 'obedient ones'. Muslims believe Muhammad was God's messenger or prophet.

When Muslims pray they use prayer mats so that the place where they pray is always clean. Muslims take off their shoes and make sure they have washed their face, feet, hands and arms. They point the head of the mat in the direction of Mecca (Makkah). Some mats have a compass already built into them.

The night of Shab-E-Barat also commemorates the entry of Muhammad into the city of Mecca. However, Shia Muslims associate this night with the birth of their last Imam. Prayers are also said for families who live away in other parts of the world.

Many Muslims believe that their destiny for the coming year are set on this night. They pray in preparation for Ramadan.

Also on this occasion, it is the duty of all Muslims to forgive one another and to make sure that debts owed to one another are settled. Prayers are said to the Almighty Allah for assistance, which must be sincere and honest.

Allah forgives Muslims this night. Visits are made to the cemetery during the night where deceased relatives are buried. Donations to charities are also traditional.

Muslims stay awake during the night, reading and then fasting the next day. Those who manage to fast have all their sins wiped away.

In Iran 'Shab' means night and 'Barat' means the night of duty or mission. In Arabic language, however, the day is known as Lailatul Bara'at, meaning the night of freedom. Some see Shab-E-Barat as the night of good fortune and a popular legend says that on this night the Prophet visits each house and relieves the pains of suffering humanity.
