Love you with a thousand years
“Hey isn’t that… Geet di?” Naina pointed to the screen, “Bro look it’s Geet di”
Maan looked up curiously hearing his young sister squeal and he stared incredulously, his gaze was fixed on the girl he once knew like she’d been a part of him however she seemed different now. She didn’t have the short cropped hair that’d once reached her shoulders, her hair now flowed down to the lower part of her back, her face seemed flawless but he guessed it was the makeup that was caked all over her face. He watched her climb down the steps gracefully, she lifted her hand waving at the cameras offering them a generous smile as she left the show. She stopped to sign a few autographs and take pictures, the guy beside her pressed his hand on the small of her back leading her away slowly towards the waiting limousine, she soon disappeared into the car…
“I miss Geet di” Naina spoke breaking him away from his inward thoughts. “I wish she returns back here and opens up a boutique here or something”
Maan only nodded pretending to listen to what his sister was saying however his mind was wandering to the days when Geet once lived next door to them and happened to be his best friend.
Maan and Geet grew up together, they’d been next door neighbours then had become friends, they’d gone to the same schools followed each other into high school. Both once were inseparable, no words were ever enough to describe their relationship, their friendship was pure, innocent and filled with happiness. All that changed in college when Geet started dating a guy from Maan’s basketball team…
Maan smile when he saw Geet walk into the gym, they’d finished a game of basketball and he grabbed his bag, bottle and towel ready to join her so they’d head out together however when he turned around she was in the arms of Gurmeet.
He clenched the bottle in his hand watching her and his team mate speak softly, Gurmeet lowered his head whispering something into her ear making her laugh. She nudged him sliding her arms around his biceps and pulled him towards the double doors and led him away.
Maan pressed his eyes closed wondering why he was feeling pissed off for, it isn’t as if there’s a rule book that’d said she can only hang out with him, but then why had he wanted her to hang out with him only.
He shook his head and decided to use the gym showers instead of going home right away, he could use some time to compose himself and his thoughts.
Maan pretended to be fine throughout the next three weeks, he’d seen her hanging around Gurmeet during lunch, she’d even got dropped off home by Gurmeet than catching a ride with him, he saw her during class since thankfully Gurmeet didn’t take the same class as them.
“You’re busy these days” he’d told her pretending to listen to the professor.
“Hmm… I guess” she shrugged and slowly looked at him. “How do you find Gurmeet?”
“He’s alright” he answered nonchalantly.
“Maan he’s your team mate, tell me something more. I like the guy so I kinda…”
“I don't know Geet. He’s my team mate, we only play together not go on dates” he replied. “You could… may be… be careful. I know a little about the guys, and they all want one thing” the words spilled out from his mouth before he could stop it.
Geet raised her brows questioningly, she was about to prod further but the bell had rung and they were dismissed. She gathered her stuff and followed Maan.
“What did you mean by that?” she asked as she walked alongside him.
“Nothing” he shook his head. “Ignore it”
“Maan tell me the truth, what do you mean?”
“I don't know, just be careful. You shouldn’t trust him so easily” he shrugged coming to a stop in the hallway which was slowly emptying as everyone made their way to their classes.
“Why is that?” she asked him. “Do you know something I don't or something? As far as I know he’s not with anyone and he likes me as well”
“No, but aren’t you moving quite fast? Like you should date someone you know an all…” he suggested.
“Oh really, how am I supposed to know him without dating him? Hmm?” she crossed her arms in front of her now.
“I don't know, be friends”
“Very funny Khurana” she rolled her eyes and shook her head at him. “I like him and he’s trustworthy”
“Seriously Geet?” he stared at her disbelievingly.
“What?”
“You’re calling him trustworthy? You’ve barely known the guy, heck how long do you actually know him?” his voice raised a little. Geet only stared back in shock.
“Do you share your thoughts with him like you do with me? Hmm? You cannot possibly be sharing your deepest secrets with him like you did with me”
“Maan what has gotten into you? You sound jealous” she frowned.
“So what? What if I am jealous?” he countered back.
Geet blinked in surprise, words failed spill out from her lips.
That day Geet had walked away, Maan only stared cursing himself inwardly, he felt stupid for even speaking about her crush or whatever the hell Gurmeet was. They hadn’t spent time together for the rest of the week, Geet sat at a different table whilst he settled beside his friend and focused on his work and basketball game.
He’d stolen glances of her in between the classes, she didn’t hang out with Gurmeet, he hadn’t seen her around the gym and she happened to be getting dropped off home by Peyton.
He’d felt sour that weekend not having spent time with her, his mood was off and he felt like he’d been a jerk for ruining her mood. He’d grabbed a couple of beers and retreated into his room slamming the door behind him and the lock turned.
An hour later he stood outside Geet’s bedroom door knocking continuously, Geet opened up with a frown.
“What?” she snapped, her jaw slightly dropped in surprise. “Maan…” she whispered. “I… I didn’t know it was you, why are you knocking so much for? You know I sleep around this time” she mumbled.
“I know, sorry” he pushed his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. “Actually I came to apologize” he paused for a moment as he tried to form the words he wanted to say to her, “I shouldn’t have said anything that day about your relationship with Gurmeet… I just…” he sighed looking down at her lilac carpet which covered her room floor. “It was wrong of me but… I felt like I was losing you, we barely spent time together and I missed you. I missed us. I’m sorry for being a jerk” he shrugged slowly lifting his head and stared at her. “I didn’t want to risk losing you to someone else…” he trailed off stepping forward. Geet gasped when he curled his hand around her nape pulling her close and lowered his head down and kissed her hard.
She moaned a small protest however she pushed her fingers through his hair kissing him back, he pressed her against the wall angling her mouth and kissed her deeply. A moment later registering what was happening, Geet had pushed away breathing heavily.
Maan looked just as shocked with his action, his lips opened and closed for a moment, but words failed to form so he rushed out the door without looking back at her once failing to notice tears had gathered in her eyes.
Maan avoided Geet for the rest of week regretting his action, he’d cursed himself, messed his chance of playing basketball professionally when he’d lashed out on his team mates and the coach had kicked him out because he’d ended up breaking Gurmeet’s nose and had punched his own coach across his jaw. He felt his head was going to explode, so many thoughts were always running in his mind, he wondered where the hell he was heading. Everywhere he seemed to look, at the end of the tunnel Geet seemed to standing there, her face calm and so perfect always telling him everything will be fine, he had closed his eyes often and saw her face with her sweet smile and everything seemed fine, all the problems disappeared.
He stood staring out his window looking at the rain pouring down heavily, the smell of rain, grass and mud mixed in the air, his eyes drew to Geet sat on her garden swing rocking back and forth. He smiled knowing she loved the rain and was probably enjoying herself, his feet moved on its accord and within seconds he found himself in her garden staring right ahead at her.
Geet stopped rocking the swing, the smile which played on her face faded slowly, she stood to her feet averting her eyes and moved to leave.
“Geet please…” Maan whispered stopping her.
“What do you want Maan?” she sighed heavily staring up at him. “What is it now?”
He stayed quiet for a moment wondering how was he going to explain his actions and himself.
“Why did you kiss me that day Maan? What did the kiss mean?” she questioned seemingly confused. “Since… that night it’s been driving me crazy, why did you kiss me? I’ve asked myself this over and over and I’ve driven myself insane because I couldn’t find an answer”
“That kiss… I kissed you because… I love you” he finally broke out. “It’s been driving me insane, I didn’t know until… now. I’ve been going through the same thing, I’ve been trying to figure out what I’d been feeling and… I’ve figured it”
Geet blinked slowly, his eyes followed the rain droplets which caressed her face then looked back into her eyes. “You understand me better than myself Geet, I just… I don't have words to explain how I feel with you” he reached forward brushing her cheeks with the back of his cold fingers, she shuddered closing her eyes for a brief moment then slowly opened them once again.
This time she stepped forward tiptoeing, Maan understood lowering his head and covered the distance between them, he clasped onto her hips pulling her to him and pressing their bodies against each other.
That happened to be the beginning of their relation, that night changed everything, Geet came to know Maan as her lover not just as her best friend. Maan fell in love with Geet even more over the coming months, everything was blissful for them. They’d always met after college for 2 hours of studying though it happened to lead to them being naked and under the covers. The blissful relationship didn’t last long, for they had different paths and dreams.
Maan glanced the acceptance letter he’d received, he wondered how he was going to tell Geet but then he recalled her mentioning something about going to Canada for the fashion course which happened to be 6 years.
He spent the better half of the night thinking of where they were headed, they had their whole lives ahead of them however right at this moment they loved each other.
He shoved the envelope in the drawer hearing his door open, swivelling his chair around he saw Geet, she grinned and sauntered over landing herself on his lap cradling both his cheeks and kissed him.
“I missed you today a little too much” she muttered nipping his lip with her teeth.
“You sneaked out this morning” he pulled her closer rubbing her ass mischievously.
“Yeah I didn’t want to be caught in your bed by your dad” she bit his lobe. “He’s at work that’s why I came around”
“Hmm…” he nodded humming in response, he cleared his throat needing to speak to her about what was out there for them. “Have you applied to university?” he questioned her slowly.
“Yeah I’m just waiting for a response from Toronto University, let’s see if they take me on” she answered. “Why?”
“I got my acceptance letter today from London” he informed her slowly reaching into the drawer and handed it to her.
She drew in a sharp breath, she’d known they were going to come to this one day but this day was here too fast. She pulled the letter out and read it to herself, Maan tried to read her face but she seemed… almost distant.
She lifted her head to meet his eyes. “Congratulations, I’m happy for you” she grinned throwing her arms around him.
“How about you tell me what you really feel?” he responded back however he reciprocated her hug.
She didn’t speak for a moment, he felt his heart ache when he heard her soft sniffles, pulling her out he cradled her cheek wiping her tears with the pad of his thumbs.
“Why are you crying?” he questioned her.
“I don't know, I’m happy for you” she frowned confused with her own feelings. “But with you going to London and me to Canada hopefully, we’re going to be so far apart…” she confessed. “It won't be the same”
“I know” he swallowed thickly. “You love me right?” he questioned her tilting her chin up to him.
“Yeah. Why would you ask such a question?” she frowned.
“Because I need you to listen to me and accept what I say, if you love me you’d do it”
“What?” she wiped her cheek with the back of her hand staring curiously.
“We’re going to take a break from each other”
Geet stiffened and standing suddenly almost falling backwards but she’d stabled herself, her eyes narrowed down at him. “What did you say?”
“Listen to me” he stood holding her upper arms. “There is nothing more I want than taking you with me, but you’ve dreamed of going to Toronto for so long so I don't want to steal that dream from you” he paused. “But I don't want to tag you along, long distance relationships are hard, not just hard almost impossible especially with the career paths we’ve both chosen”
“So because of that you want to break up?” she stared at him disbelievingly.
“I love you but I won't ask you to follow me Geet. I don't want us to end up resenting each other, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us. I’m letting you go now so I’d be able to win you back later”
“You’re serious?” she whispered.
“Yeah baby” he nodded. “You’re always going to be here” he pointed to his heart. “If not with me for now but you’re the girl I’m going to marry Geet” he said it so sincerely she broke down crying softly, Maan gathered her into his arms.
“How long do you have left?” she questioned once she’d calmed down after a bit.
“Few more weeks” he answered brushing his fingers through her hair soothingly.
“They’re my weeks” she muttered, he only agreed wanting to make the most of their last weeks’ together.
Over the first two years they’d tried to keep in touch with each other however their schedule barely allowed them time, Maan forgot his dreams of playing basketball professionally after he’d sustained an injury to his lower back, his father forbid him to play further so Maan pursued on doing what he’d planned as a fall back. He’d studied and gotten a degree in being a criminology lawyer, he was quite a well-known prosecutor now, Geet’s plan went accordingly and she was now quite a name with the celebrities with her clothes being worn by them. With time they’d drifted however never forgot…
“I need to sleep bad” Maan muttered as he walked down the grassy path with his sister beside him.
“Well bhai it’s your fault for agreeing to the stag night” Naina muttered. “I mean what the hell were you thinking getting drunk like that?” she frowned. “Anyways I’m going to go and find Peyton” she excused herself hurrying to the marquee. Maan continued his task of finding Nathan because he knew Nathan wanted him dressed in a particular way for the wedding ceremony. He stepped into the marquee which was on the opposite on Peyton’s, Nathan smiled up at him, he was about to head inside further when something caught the corner of his eye. He frowned excusing himself and rounded the marquee, his chest heaved as realisation sunk in.
“You’re even more beautiful than I remember” he suddenly spoke finding his voice.
Geet turned around with a small yelp in surprise, she stared at Maan with her eyes large and wide. “Maan…” she breathed out softly.
“Glad you remember me” he smiled warmly.
Geet offered a small smile and walked over embracing him tightly, Maan reciprocated.
“How are you?” she pulled away slowly perusing him from head to toe. “You’re not so bad yourself as well. Playing keeping you in shape?” she teased.
“I’m good, gym’s keeping me in shape” he answered. “Playing days are over, you’re looking at prosecutor Maan Khurana” he lifted his invisible collar with pride.
“Lawyer?” Geet raised her brows in surprise. “Wow… My gosh, I didn’t know. I’m so happy for you” she replied.
“I see you’ve both met” Nathan ducked his head out the marquee. “But if possible can I have Maan in here getting ready, I have got a very pregnant fiance waiting to be married”
“I’ll see you around?” Maan slowly stared moving backwards though he continued facing her, Geet nodded in response feeling a sense of warmth rushing to her heart.
The headache, the tiredness all disappeared for Maan, he changed in record time wanting to catch another glimpse of Geet. He looked at himself in the mirror more than the others almost wanting to assure himself he looked perfect for her, he stepped out and instantly his eyes drew to her standing near Naina and Aviya laughing about something.
He felt drawn to her like 7 years ago, she was fire and he was the moth. She was the object, he was the shadow. She was the mirror, he was the reflection. A shudder ran down his back as if it was their first night on a date, he’d been just as overwhelmed and nervous.
Her soft brow eyes drew towards him and she offered a smile, almost a shy smile. There was something in her eyes that’d given him confidence, given him peace, her eyes made him feel safe and he’d always felt he was home. He turned his head feeling Nathan slap his back raising his brows in amusement, Maan shook his head chuckling and they headed down the aisle and stood in place.
Maan often found himself glancing at Geet, she stood opposite him watching Nathan and Peyton taking vows, she’d caught him more than one time but quickly looked away with a small smile. He smiled inwardly and patiently watched the ceremony, even though his heart ached to say a thousand words to the woman he loved.
He lifted his hands with the others and clapped once Nathan and Peyton were announced married, he climbed the two steps and hugged his best friend, Geet had done the same and hugged Peyton.
Once the married couple disappeared into the car and drew away, the wedding guests made their way to their respective cars to head to the reception.
Geet looked to her side to find Maan a couple of feet away from her, her attention however was drawn away when Naina came excitedly throwing her arms out.
“Oh gosh, Geet di” Naina squeezed Geet in her arms, despite Geet being tall, petite and older she was nothing compared to the young Naina who happened to have the same lanky tall height as her brother. “I can't believe you’ve come, you’re famous and known for your dresses” Naina pulled back. “I missed you so so much. Papa doesn’t stop talking and praising you” she sighed.
Geet smiled. “I missed you too”
“Anyways what are you both still doing here? We’re supposed to leave” She looked between Geet and Maan. “Geet come with us in our car” she pleaded tugging her wrist.
“Oh, um…” Geet looked surprised. “It’s okay, I don't wanna trouble you guys and I’ve…”
“Geet stop being a stranger, come with us. Bhai doesn’t mind right?” Naina looked at Maan for a response, her eyes lit up hopefully. Maan shook his head stepping aside pointing towards his car.
“See” Naina grinned pulling Geet by the wrist, Maan smiled inwardly seeing Geet looking out of sorts.
“I saw you smiling Mr Khurana” Geet whispered nudging Maan as they walked towards the reception hall. “You’re enjoying me dragged here and there by your sister aren’t you?”
“I might be” he glanced at her sideways.
Geet shook her head at him and followed behind Naina who was racing ahead without caring.
“Geet” Maan called, she stopped and looked over her shoulder. “Save a dance for me would you?” he requested.
“Sure” She nodded smiling then slid into the reception hall, Maan followed inside and went towards the best men who were talking amongst each other.
“I see Geet has returned” Alexander commented looking over at the bridesmaids huddled together laughing and joking. “She’s looking even prettier than before, damn look at those legs of hers…”
“Yes she’s hot and keep your eyes off her” Maan spoke earning Alexander’s attention.
“Khurana didn’t you finish with her back in college?” Alexander’s eyebrows rose in amusement.
“What makes you say that?” Maan answered back with another question.
“But you…” Alexander frowned. “You broke up with her?”
“No I didn’t, who told you that?”
“Didn’t he break up with Geet?” Alexander looked at the Jake.
“He’s very much into her dude. Back off” Jake laughed shaking his head. “He’s whipped”
“Who’s whipped?” Brooke appeared, they all jerked and turned to see the bridesmaid staring curiously at them.
“No.. one” Jake cleared his throat. “So what are you lovely ladies doing here sneaking up on us?” he shoved his hands into his pockets and stared down at them.
“Speeches are to be made, we just wanted to make sure you didn’t have any dicky jokes written down” Carmel answered. “You guys can be so pathetic and unromantic when it comes to speeches”
“We’re just as romantics as…” Alexander paused. “As what?” he looked at his friends for support.
“As stones” Carl piped out.
“As ston…” Alexander shot Carl a dirty look. “Dude that’s the best you come out with? What the fck is Jennifer doing marrying you?”
“I’ll have you know my baby is very romantic” Jennifer joined them wrapping her arms around Carl. “He’s more of an action man” she winked. Carl laughed seeing Alexander giving them a narrowed look.
“Now remember no dicky jokes” Brooke pointed her finger to all of them before striding away with her friends, Geet looked over her shoulder at Maan who smiled at her faintly.
Once the speeches were over, the husband and wife were called to the dance floor for their first dance, Maan looked ahead staring at the girl he loved sitting opposite him on the other side, he stood and walked towards her.
“Would you do me the honours?” he held out his hand, Geet looked at his hand then back at him, she nodded and placed her hand into his.
He led her to the dance floor wrapping his arms around her waist, she slid her arms around his neck holding him.
“It’s our song” he reminded her. John Legend’s All of me played in the background, the lighting was dimmed down, others joined on the dance floor with their respective partners.
“From our first date” she added with a smile.
What would I do without your smart mouth?
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't pin you down
What's going on in that beautiful mind
I'm on your magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright
[Pre-Chorus:]
My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind
[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh
“I missed you Maan…” she spoke softly pressing her face into the hollow of his neck. “Do you regret letting me go?” she pulled her head back.
“I never really let you go, you were always with me” he replied.
[Verse 2:]
How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you're crying you're beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I'm around through every mood
You're my downfall, you're my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you
[Pre-Chorus:]
My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind
[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh
“Where did we go wrong?” she muttered looking at him expectantly.
“It wasn’t us, life just happened” he responded caressing her cheek.
[Bridge:]
Give me all of you
Cards on the table, we're both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it's hard
[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you
I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh
“I never stopped loving you” She admitted.
Maan felt his heart soar with her words, he’d been hesitant but her words relieved and soothed him at the same time. “I’d always love you, even if you ever stop” he cupped her nape. “I love you so much Geet” he whispered, his eyes glistening and radiating with happiness, she giggled, a small tear escaping the corner of her eyes.
Maan pressed his forehead to hers. “I meant what I said all those years ago. You’d be the only girl I’d marry” he informed.
She inhaled sharply.
“Will you…” he pressed his lips to her ear. “Geet Handa marry me?” his voice deep and thick with emotion.
She bit down on her lip closing her eyes as she registered his words. “I can't say no, I hadn’t been able to say it all those years ago, I still won't be able to say no to anything” she muttered.
“Should I take that as a yes?” he pressed his hand at the small of her back bringing her closer, their fronts touching each other intimately, her head rested on his shoulder as she nuzzled his neck.
“Mmmhmm…” she nodded against his shoulder.
He grinned cupping her nape, angling her head and lowered his lips down upon hers sealing it with a passionate kiss.
