Ranbir is a commitment phobic, hard to tie down. Such men tend to be very charming during the love bombing phase. He was touted as the prince of BW with his Kapoor legacy and very grand debut. Sort of like a prize. Imagine yourself young women out there, if you are pursued by a man of such stature when you are an up and comer 22 year old, would you not fall for him? None if these women really thought with their brains at that time except Alia.. she kept her eyes on her prize and got it.
