We need some kind of tax reforms to tax the ultra rich based on a true tax rate but I don't know what's a fair way to do that. The wealth gap between the stinking rich and the poor that we have in several countries should also be bridged, in a fair manner, again I don't know how.

we tax annual income, not the wealth someone like bezos has tied up in stocks that they are holding. Wealth tax has been generally a bad idea...

as we know, deductions also come into play. Bezos might have had a lot of these in 2011, as well as tax loss carried over from past years. One way that could have happened was if he was investing his personal money into some businesses in prior years. That's exactly the kind of behavior we want to reward.

but irrespective, over the long run, these guys pay far more in absolute terms than ordinary folks.... as they start accessing their wealth to generate current income.

We do have a very good GDP, there is a huge gap between rich and poor. I think per capita income might reflect this. I will try to find if there is any dataset so I can visualise this data. This does not help the poor. We just do not realise it because we are not poor. I am not opposed to free market(with few regulations if necessary to protect small businesses) even though free market is not left concept. In today's world I think countries would not have much growth opportunities without free market. We have to adapt to what is best for people. The high living standard in Nordic countries is because of the social benefits they provide the citizens including healthcare benefits and education so I would love to have that in India.

no, high standard living in Nordic countries was not because of the social benefits. The social benefits came about because they had the money! And that's the usual trend- as countries become rich, they spend more on welfare programs.

Take Norway for example. Norway is oil rich, and they have invested their oil funds wisely (through their sovereign fund run by Norges, something I know about). They have a tiny population, and can afford their welfare programs and still not be running big credit-busting currency-devaluing deficits.

developing countries by and large have had faster growth once they dumped the socialist mentality.

This is not something which will change overnight but it is really something which should change.

@bold This is done basically because if you are from upper caste, you generally have generational wealth which the SC/ST generally does not have. They couldn't get into any high positions few generations back. This means that the high positions were already taken by upper caste and they hold the generational wealth and recognition. For example: If you have a family member who is a doctor three generations back, the possibility of the next generation getting into good position is higher because of the social recognition and also wealth. But with SC/ST, three generation back they might not be well educated. But two generation back they earned money by struggling and now they are doing well. This still doesn't mean they are free from societal stigma. They still face caste based atrocities. This is why reservation is given to sc/st even when they are doing well.

Makes sense, even if high on emotion. The number of generations to look back sounds arbitrary. If I am hiring for a position, am I supposed to do a background check on the candidates’ grandparents/great grandparents, if any?

If Modi is OBC, and had kids and grandkids, none of them should be availing of reservations.

Norway is definitely benefited from natural resources. I also do agree that they are a small country so it's easier to have better per capita income with higher GDP. They are also taxed a lot. The benefits make it possible for everyone to lead a high standard life.

As I mentioned, I agree that free market does help but I do not agree that caste based reservation should be removed rather than taxing the rich more and building more institutes/ providing job opportunities. Welfare schemes for marginalised communities are needed so that we can build the gap between rich and poor.

@bold Yes I was just giving an example.
I do not understand what you mean by checking background.

Are you talking about creamy layer when referring to Modi and his kids and grand kids? Sorry but I did not understand.

I wanted to know how a hiring manager would go about doing a background check on the candidate’s previous generations, if the candidate applied under the reservation category, and presently comes from a financially well to do family.

As for the other question, if India’s PM Modi, who belongs to the OBC category, were to have kids and grandkids, hypothetically, your proposal would have them too taking advantage of quotas/reservation where as mine doesn’t.

Nonsense

If actually went by records SC/ST availing the reservations are those who already got reservation by their previous generations.

SC/ST are still suffering and who are suffering have still not got benefitted from it bcoz the uplifted people from that class haven't helped them, rather keep using the reservations when they don't need it.

SC/ST reservations definitely needs upgredation, but aisa kabhi hoga nahi. O
