Second Innings: A Story of Love and Family (Part 1)

It was one of the busiest days at the office. Armaan and Abhira were both preoccupied and tired by the end of the day.

At 9:30 PM, Armaan finally wrapped up his work and walked towards Abhira’s office, where he found her still busy as usual. He knew that Abhira had been careless with her sleep and food, often eating junk food or instant noodles on the go. Aware of her low blood count and weight loss, he noticed her health was being compromised. Armaan entered and sat in front of her, waiting for her to finish her call.

He kept showing her the time, signaling that she needed to wrap up. She quickly ended the call, packed up, and they both headed home. While driving, Abhira received a call that made her tense. Armaan asked what was wrong, and she said she needed to be somewhere urgently. She offered Armaan the choice of taking a cab or the car, as she would take a cab herself.

Armaan insisted, "Nai Abhira, itni raat ko mei tumhe akele nai jane dunga, sath chalte hain."

Abhira was too occupied to argue.

They arrived at a place that looked more like a farmhouse. Armaan was unsure where they were. As soon as Abhira stopped the car, she ran inside, and Armaan followed her.

As he caught up, he saw that the house was nestled in a large garden space. It was not a bungalow, but an old house. A lady approached him and asked who he was and how he had come inside.

Armaan replied, "Woh mei Abhira ke sath, mere naam Armaan hai." The lady led him to a corridor and then to a room. It was dark, and Armaan couldn’t see much. But when he entered the room, he saw several senior citizens standing around a bed where another senior lay. Abhira was talking to him, saying, "Kya Uncle, apne to dara diya, aise koi karta hai? Dawai agar khatam hogai hai to batana chahiye na."

The lady who had brought Armaan forward said, "Abhira, kitni baar pucha tha, fir bhi..." Abhira interrupted, "Geeta ji, please ab puche mat, in sab ki checking hogi."

Armaan was surprised to see the affection everyone had for Abhira, and the affection she had for them. Slowly, Abhira noticed Armaan and came over, apologizing, "Sorry, Khadoosman, Uncle ki tabiyat ke tension mein tumhe chhod aai."

As they talked in the corridor, an old lady called out, "Abhira, are tu hai kya?"

Abhira turned and replied, "Are Kashi Amma, aap kyu uthi? Meine dekh liya Uncle ko, tension mat lo. Sanjana ko bol diya, kal wo aakar checkup kar jayegi."

Kashi Amma looked at Armaan, and Abhira introduced him. Kashi Amma said, "Are, to ye Khadoosman hai. Waise khadoos to nai lagta ye." Armaan touched her feet and took her blessing.

As the two women continued talking, Armaan realized that this was an old age home. Abhira had always been fond of elderly people, especially since she herself was an orphan. As they walked, Kashi Amma asked, "Abhira, tumne khana khaya?" Abhira replied, "Kha lungi Amma, kyu tension le rahe ho?" Kashi Amma insisted, "Ruk, tere liye besan ke ladoo banaye the, aur kuch dinner ke dal chawal hai, kha ke ja." She then turned to Armaan and said, "Beta, kuch zyada to nai hai, par pata nai tum khaoge ya?"

Armaan immediately responded, "Ek to aap beta bula rahi hai, aur fir itni formality. Maa ke haath ke khane ko kaun mana karta hai?"

Amma looked at Abhira, who had an expression that said, "I told you so."

They went to the dining area, where Amma served them hot dal chawal with homemade achar and ladoos. Armaan and Abhira were so hungry that they started eating without a second thought. The food was delicious, and Amma kept checking on Armaan, asking if he needed anything. She joked that Abhira always ate well. As they ate, a few more elderly ladies joined them, bringing food they had made. Even though it was leftover from dinner, they heated it up and made sure Abhira and Armaan ate well. Armaan could see the love and affection everyone had for each other and for Abhira. He also noticed how well they treated them.

After dinner, Amma asked Armaan, "Khana acha tha na? Ye Abhira bina bataye aati hai. Bata kar aana agali baar, to ache se khana banaye."

Armaan replied, "Amma, mene bahut din baad itna acha khana khaya hai, wo bhi peet bhar ke. Aapne itne pyaar aur apnapan se khilaya." (The meal reminded him of his family and his mother, Vidya.)

Abhira sensed this, but before she could say anything, Amma said, "Chalte hain." Suddenly, a chalk hit Abhira, and she exclaimed, "Kaun hai, ye badmaash bachche?"

A group of about 15 children of different ages came running towards Abhira, hugging her. They called her Abhira Di and complained that she hadn’t visited in a long time.

Abhira apologized, "Sorry baba, busy thi." Armaan stood with Amma, watching the scene unfold. Amma said, "Aao, apne haath ki coffee pilati hu. Ab ye bachche jaane nai denge Abhira ko.

Part 2:

A Place Called Home Amma recounted how Abhira had once come here with adoption papers for a 10-year-old girl dressed up to meet prospective parents. However, the adopting couple rejected the girl, citing concerns about her unknown bloodline. The little girl heard this and cried inconsolably.

Abhira was furious and decided to find a place for such children—a place where they would be accepted, whether adopted or not. She envisioned a home where these orphans could feel loved and rewrite their lives. With the help of one of her clients, Abhira got this old age home and the orphanage combined and renamed it "Second Innings."

Although Jessica, her client, funded some money, Abhira realized that this was her story and her life. She vowed never to let any orphan or elderly person face the humiliation or sympathy she had experienced. She understood the importance of money and decided that she would achieve her dream on her own, without begging for funds. Abhira asked Jessica for a raise and an increase in commission as she handled big clients. Amma explained how Abhira funds the place and has started small businesses to help the women who have no place to go. These women make money and save for their future. Abhira and her colleagues regularly contribute and volunteer their time.

Every child here has a godmother and godfather, and they are all part of a big, happy family. Armaan listened intently, watching Abhira with the kids. He learned how Abhira occasionally came to teach them and spend time with them. He saw her happiness and felt proud of her once again.

As the kids were going to bed, they came to wish Amma goodnight. They looked at Armaan, who was introduced to them, and they quickly called him "Armaan Bhaiya," making friends with him as Abhira’s friend. Armaan couldn’t deny that Abhira had turned this place into a home, a place that gave him peace and a sense of family. As it was getting late, Abhira was taking Kashi Amma to her room, and Amma told Armaan to visit again, with or without Abhira, whenever he had time. Armaan nodded in agreement.

As they were heading to Amma’s room, an old man started shouting at Abhira about some property case. Abhira patiently explained, "Dadu, aisa nai hota hai." As they talked, he noticed Armaan and asked, "Ye kis ladke ke sath ghum rahi hai?" Abhira quickly responded, "Aapko lagta hai mei galat bol rahi hu? Ye Armaan hai, senior lawyer hai, ise pucho." Dadu replied, "Are ja, bewakoof mat bana." Abhira insisted, "Dadu, mei jhoot nai bolti. Ye Armaan Poddar hai, Udaipur ka one of the best lawyers and youngest. Mujhse 5-6 saal senior lawyer, iski baat manoge, kuch nai ho sakta." He showed Armaan the property papers and explained how his grandson was selling the property without consulting him. The house held memories of his late wife, and he was upset at the way he was being treated. He swore he would rather burn the house than let his grandson have it.

Armaan, understanding the emotional and legal intricacies, offered to help. "Dadu, main aapka case dekhunga. Aap bilkul tension mat lijiye," he assured, promising to get to the bottom of the situation. Abhira looked at Armaan, grateful and relieved. She knew that with Armaan's expertise, Dadu's worries would soon be over. They said their goodbyes and left for home, driving back in comfortable silence. Armaan was deep in thought, reflecting on everything he had learned about Abhira tonight. She was more than just a successful lawyer; she was someone who had built a family out of strangers, who cared deeply for those who had no one else.

As they reached home, Armaan finally broke the silence, "Abhira, tum sach mein amazing ho. Jo tumne 'Second Innings' ke liye kiya, wo bahut kam log kar paate hain." Abhira smiled, a hint of shyness in her eyes, "Thanks, Khadoosman. Kabhi kabhi bas lagta hai ki duniya mein thoda pyaar aur apnapan ho to sab kuch theek ho sakta hai." Armaan nodded, feeling a warmth in his heart that he hadn't experienced in a long time. He knew that from this night on, everything had changed between them—not just their friendship but something deeper, something unspoken yet understood. As they parted ways for the night, Armaan couldn't help but think that in Abhira, he had found something precious—something that made him believe in the power of love, family, and second chances.
