France makes abortion a constitutional right

The introduction to the French legislation said: "Unfortunately, this event (in the US) is not isolated: in many countries, even in Europe, there are currents of opinion that seek to hinder at any cost the freedom of women to terminate their pregnancy if they wish."

Mr Macron said last week that his government is committed to "making women's right to have an abortion irreversible by enshrining it in the constitution".

None of France's major political parties represented in parliament has questioned the right to abortion, which was decriminalised in the country in 1975.

Polls show around 80% of French people support the fact that abortion is legal.

Today's vote makes France the first country to have a constitutional right to abortion since the former Yugoslavia inscribed it in its 1974 constitution. Serbia's 2006 constitution carries on that spirit, stating that "everyone has the right to decide on childbirth".

In Canada, we have no laws regulating abortion. It is a medical procedure like any other. It is publicly funded.

However, access to abortion is a huge problem in Canada. Many people live far from a medical centre where surgical abortion is available.

Due to threats of violence, many medical schools don't include abortion in their curriculum. Government could step in with laws requiring medical schools to teach abortion procedures to any doctor who wants to practice family medicine or specialize in obstetrics. No one who didn't learn to deal with a life/health-threatening pregnancy should be allowed to practise as an OB/GYN.

Do they mention how long into the pregnancy abortion is allowed?  In most European countries, it's 14 weeks.  In the US, it was allowed all the way until birth, w/ our former  governor Ralph Northam talking about how to continue w/ an abortion even after an abortion has failed and a baby is lying on the table, "kept comfortable while the parents decide what to do w/ it"

The Dobbs' decision by SCOTUS did not outlaw abortion, as ghoulish propagandists want people to believe: it just made it a state issue where people can vote on it.  And even in red states like Kansas and Ohio, people have (unfortunately IMO) voted down ballot initiatives that would outlaw late term abortions (not sure about the threshold where they defined "late").  Anyway, different US states are now working out what their laws on this should be, and people are having their input on it, which is how it should be
