South Africa vs West Indies Prediction - U19 World Cup 2024

South Africa U19 vs West Indies U19, 2nd Match, Group B

South Africa Under-19, take on the West Indies Under-19 in match number 2 at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.

England and Scotland are the other two teams present in Group B, which will see the top three teams progress to the Super Six stage.

South Africa lifted silverware in 2014, whereas the West Indies were the winners in 2016, as both teams look to get their campaign off to a winning start in search of their second title.

In the lead-up to the event, South Africa played warm-up fixtures against Pakistan and Afghanistan, where rain had the final say in both games.

Led by all-rounder Juan James, South Africa Under-19 will look to translate their home-soil advantage into success at this World Cup.

The onus will be on Steve Stolk and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who are coming off a good showing with the bat in the recently concluded Under-19 Tri-Nation series between South Africa, India, and Afghanistan. Other than these two, Dewan Marais and David Teeger will also have to come good.

Left-arm speedster Kwena Maphaka will spearhead the pace attack for the hosts, and having played in the previous edition of the tournament, he will be looking to bring all his experience into play. Nqobani Mokoena and Martin Khumalo are the other seam bowling options, while Sipho Potsane will handle the spin bowling duties. As for the West Indies Under-19, they breezed past New Zealand in their first warm-up game before the second game against Nepal was washed out. Under the captaincy of right-hand batter Stephan Pascal, the West Indies have shown in the lead-up to the competition that they have what it takes to go all the way.

Having made his first-class debut late last year during West Indies A's tour of South Africa, left-hand batter Jordan Johnson will be crucial to their chances in this event. Jewel Andrew is also in good batting form, as is Joshua Dorne for the boys in Maroon. Left-arm spinner Nathan Sealy was the star with the ball in the warm-up fixture against New Zealand and will hold the key in the spin department. As far as their seam attack goes, right-arm medium pacer Isai Thorne will be the leader of the pack, and he will be hoping for support from Nathan Edward and Deshawn James.

It promises to be a tightly fought contest between two seemingly evenly matched teams. Who will get their campaign off to a winning start? We shall find out soon enough.

The 15th edition of the Under-19 World Cup is set to take off with flying colours. Two games will be played today – USA will tussle against Ireland while South Africa will square off against West Indies. Plenty of promising youngsters will be on display throughout the tournament. South Africa are the hosts this time and the matches will take place across five venues – Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein, Benoni, Kimberley and East London. Talking about the format, there’s been a tweak this time around. There are four groups featuring four teams each. The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super Sixes stage, with the 12 teams then being divided into two groups of six each. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals. The semi-finals and the finals will be played in Benoni.

The Under-19 World Cup has produced a lot of enigmatic players in the past. Numerous of them have gone on to represent their country at the international level, and some of them have left a lasting impression in the glorious game of cricket. In the 1998 edition, Chris Gayle (Universe Boss) emerged as the top run scorer, and the rest is history.

Now let’s focus our attention to our live coverage of the match between South Africa and the West Indies. The conditions in Potchefstroom are usually batter-friendly. The weather is nice and sunny as well. So, we can expect the ball to come onto the bat and that opens the door for the talented batters to showcase their potential and range. South Africa’s both warm-up matches were a washout, while the West Indies won one out of their two warm-up games. The Proteas will have an advantage of home conditions, and they will be eyeing catching the West Indies off guard. India are the defending Under-19 champions. Will we see a new champion in this edition? Stay with us as the excitement builds up! Toss and team lineups are coming up in a while...

WI won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Pitch Report: We are on pitch number 5 today. Just looking down at the surface, the grass in nice and put well together. There will be nice amount of carry and some extra bounce. There is a breeze blowing across the ground, so the players have to take that into account, reckon Samuel Badree and Lyda Greenway.

The Sun is shining in all its glory in Potchefstroom.
