Allow me to offer my sympathy from Canada.
In September 2023, we had a "similar" incident. Yaroslav Hunka, age 98, was granted an invitation into our House of Commons because he lives in the riding of then-Speaker Anthony Rota. During his visit, he was applauded for his military service as a Ukrainian fighting for independence. Soon, the detail was noted that his volunteering for the Waffen-SS Galicia Division ~80 years ago had put him under Nazi command at a time when those who didn't enlist were at risk of forced labour under Nazi invaders of the Soviet Union.
Every soldier isn't a war criminal, and every protester isn't a terrorist, but still, appearances ...
