Finally, after a lot of delays and contemplation, the Asian Cricket Council announced the schedule for the Asia Cup. 

The last edition of the Cup was held in 2018 in ODI format. The countries in Asia were all set to clash with each other on the cricketing grounds in 2020 in the T20 format when the pandemic hit the globe. 

Due to this, the tournament was postponed. The delays were made to such an extent that the tournament is being played 2 years late.

Given that the pandemic has softened and the world is pacing towards a circumstance where COVID is not posing a huge threat, the Asia Cup is all set to be played in 2022.

The ACC or Asian Council of Cricket has announced the venue and schedule for the tournament. 

The countries will face each in the T20 Tournament in the venues fixated by the ACC. This cup is one of the major events for Cricket in Asian Countries.

The tournament was first played in the year 1984. The last edition was held in an ODI format in the United Arab Emirates. India won the last Asia Cup as it emerged as the most successful in the cup, which did not lose even a single match. The Indian Batsman Shikhar Dhawan was named the Man of the Series for the Cup. After multiple postponements, the tournament will be held on the soil of Sri Lanka in August 2022.

The five prominent cricketing teams in the continent have qualified to participate in the cup. The qualifiers will also be held in Sri Lanka as well. It will be very interesting to see which new team will be added for the Asia Cup 2022.

The wait is finally over as the battle for Asian supremacy commences on 27th August with the all-important final on 11th September.The 15th edition of the Asia Cup will serve as ideal preparation ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup. 

Asia Cup 2022: 

The official schedule for the Asia Cup is yet to be released. It is confirmed that the Asia Cup will be played in 2022 prior to the T20 World Cup which is conducted by the Internation Cricket Council. 

The Council has announced the commencement of the Qualifiers matches on 20 August 2022. The cup will be further played after the inclusion of the winning team. 

The tentative schedule is available. It is anticipated that the matches will be played in August and September. Precisely, the tournament will commence in the middle of August and will be played till September 2022. The cup will be hosted in a manner that the boards get ample time prior to their on-ground participation in the T20 World Cup.

The teams are all set and ready to play the Asia Cup as they have been waiting for this moment since 2018. 

The last edition was played in the year 2018. The present edition was supposed to be held in 2020 which was not possible due to the pandemic. Pakistan was supposed to host that edition. However, due to political tensions and the Covid outburst, every plan has changed.

6 teams will play in the Asia Cup in 2022. Out of these, five teams are selected by the means of their satisfaction with the Council Rules for the cup. ACC has clearly stated that the five teams shall be Full Members of the International Cricket Council. They shall definitely play in the tournament.

The other team that will be added to the list will be the winner of the Qualifiers for the Asia Cup. The Qualifiers will be hosted by Sri Lanka. The match will be played on 20 August 2022. The Eastern Region Teams that will battle for their qualification are Singapore and Hong Kong. While the two teams that will battle from the Western Region are Kuwait and UAE. The team which will win the qualifier will be the sixth team to participate in the fully-fledged Asia Cup.

Virat Kohli & KL Rahul set for a comeback: Both Kohli and KL Rahul will return to the side. Virat Kohli has already informed selectors about his availability. Kohli took a break from the West Indies and Zimbabwe tours.

While Virat Kohli’s form has been the biggest worry for the Indian team, there is no imminent threat his No. 3 slot. He is set to continue in the same slot. There has been no specific discussions on Kohli’s future in the shortest format.

Even if he doesn’t have a great Asia Cup, his years of experience and match-winning ability will be difficult to ignore for the marquee event in Australia. Deepak Hooda will be the backup No 3 for India.

Asia CUP India Squad Selection LIVE: Who are in contention?

• The Asia Cup squad is likely to be the final squad for T20 World Cup barring any late injuries.
• However, there are few players who will be contending for a few spots in the squad.
• Arshdeep Singh is all set to be inducted into the full-strength squad. His left-arm pace will not only be handy but his supreme control in the death overs will be the other reason.
• But with just 15 players and two reserves in the team, selectors will have a big headache on selection.
• Arshdeep Singh will be the designated third seamer after Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar.
• But it’s the spinners’ slots where the real competition is.
• Yuzvendra Chahal is the No 1 spinner. But Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav will have to compete for the 3rd slot.
• Ravindra Jadeja being the all-rounder will be in the Playing XI.
• Amongst the batters, Deepak Hooda seems to have sealed the backup No 3 slot ahead of Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson.
• But it’s Ishan Kishan who finds himself in a tight spot due to versatility of Suryakumar Yadav and Hooda.
• Ishan is likely to be the backup opening option.
