Here is the deal, is the show a little OTT and dramatic, hell yes. But the show is not bad by any means, and people saying a child shouldn’t be saying some of the dialogues: THEY DO NOT LIVE IN OUR TIME. Children had to grow up much faster in that era, they knew a lot more about thing then what we knew because of the time.
Think about it, there were cases where kids maybe 2 or 3 years older than Bondita were forced to become parents, even Shubra was! This was in the peak of feelings of patriotism, nationality, and peak season for a lot of infections in which people died quite young. Because of this they started their families young, it’s very normal for a wife of that era to think of her identity being connected with her husband, think of the examples in the show: Bondita’s mom and Sampoorna for a short time. They were only known as their husband’s spouse or the mom of their child, with that kind of mentality wouldn’t you do everything in your power to save your husband, setting aside the fact that it’s Anirudh.
Also they time of consent in this era was 14 (legally but people married younger as well) here is an article . So technically Sampoorna can marry Binoy. The child marriage protection law from that era, was a sham (the first one), historically it did nothing to prevent it in villages. That was shown in the show as well! So they are true to the era!
Finally getting back to Anirudh or the male lead, he is a brilliant character, he’s got the speed and intelligence of his youth and the sharp tongue and quick to act on his emotions haste of his age. Ani doesn’t have tact, he’s barely out of college, most people like me, don’t know what we are doing with our life when your student life is about to end and you are starting a new chapter which is why he is doing everything but being a Barrister, in fact it’s normal! And the relationship that Anirudh and Bondita share is one of partners, confidants, and a mentor/mentee relationship. Not once have I see a pedophiliac relationship, they truly care about one another.
Do I think this show is perfect, far from it! But is it a good show, and can it be a good show, definitely! They have talked about a lot of issues that even pertain to us now, not even from that era. The idea of superstitions is still something people unnecessarily believe. Regardless, it’s a Drama and it’s marked as a Drama. They are going dramatize it and not be correct all the time for viewership. I am not saying to agree with the show, rather disagree factually and eloquently -not half truths, misunderstanding, or pushing a false narrative.
