Here is Part II--folks in healthcare; please pretend like you don't see errors in the medical info.
Sabeena: Jab ap off hongi to do I go back to Dr. Asfandyar?
Sabeena asked, trying to sound as normal as possible.
Zubiya was taken aback by her question and looked at her face. As a woman, she knew exactly where this question was coming from so she tried to sound as dissuasive as possible in her response.
Z: Our schedules are the same for now so you and I will have the same days off. Dr. Asfandyar is very busy so if the need arises, we will be placing you with another doctor.
Sabeena obviously did not like that response and decided not to worry about it too much for now.
The first few days of training went by fast. Sabeena was slow and hesitant at first but was intelligent no doubt therefore she was quickly adapting as she was opening up a bit. Zubiya was a great teacher and was friendly, patient and assertive at the same time. As hard as Sabeena tried, she couldn't help but respect Zubiya's knowledge and dedication towards her job. She also started to notice and appreciate the way the hospital staff and patients interacted with Zubiya. She learned that she was friendly with everyone and was kind of the go-to person for all personal or professional issues. " yeh bechari behen jee types sab ki baji ban jati hain" she thought to herself.
What really caught Zubiya's attention was Sabeena's unnecessary interest in Asfand and his schedule. Zubiya had also heard her brag to other trainees about how Dr. Asfandyar had not scolded her yet and was so nice to her. Zubiya knew Asfand's daant and ghussa did not discriminate and it was only a matter of time till it was Sabeena's turn but decided not to warn herπ. Zubiya and Asfand conducted themselves in a professional manner at work and if you weren't already aware, there was a chance that you would never find out that they were a couple. There were certain people like Dr. Asifa, Dr. Haroon or Dr. Shahroz who were privy to their more personal or casual interactions at work but those were rare and only occurred in his office or in moments where it was just them with their close work friends. Some of the other trainees had heard that Dr. Zubiya and Dr. Asfandyar were married to each other but because Sabeena felt she was superior to other trainees, she didn't interact with them much. Her work with Zubiya also kept her really busy so she didn't have time for the latest hospital gossip either.
They had been working together for about 3 weeks-Zubiya and Sabeena were just finishing up their rounds when they saw Dr. Asifa at the nursing station
A: Zubiya tum Rehmat bibi ki updates discuss karna chah rahi thin na?
Z: Yes, Asfand bhi agaye hain office main hain, can I discuss with you and him at the same time?
A: Sure, tum chalo I will meet you in his office. Sabeena noticed how Zubiya had randomly dropped the Dr.' prefix from his name and also recalled how she had heard him say just 'Zubiya' a few times but didn't think much of it. A lot of other staff like Dr. Haroon and Dr. Hira were also on first name bases with each other so she chose to ignore it.
S: Aap jaiye main 2 minutes main wahin ap sey milti hon. Zubiya said okay and started walking towards his office.
Asfand's office.
Sabeena walked in and saw Asfand on his computer and observed that Zubiya was half sitting-half standing on the left side of his L-shaped desk. His right hand was on the mouse and he was pointing at something on his screen with his left. Zubiya was leaning over his left shoulder and was saying something to him while looking at his screen. A tinge of jealousy coursed through Sabeena looking at their closeness. Zubiya looked up towards the door and didn't fail to notice that Sabeena had retouched her lipstick and was now running her fingers through her hair which were tied up a few minutes ago in the ward but were now loose over her shoulders. Dr. Asifa walked in and sat down. Zubiya straightened up but continued to sit on the left side of his desk behind his shoulder.
Z: I wanted your opinions on Rehmat bibi's condition. We know she is carrying twins and will be 32 weeks tomorrow. She has been staying here on bedrest for about 2 weeks now but her water broke last week and the nurse told me this morning that she is now bleeding. We know she has severe gestational hypertension and there is a high risk of placenta abruption. I wanted your opinions to see if we could go ahead with a C-section tomorrow.
Dr. Asifa: Can we wait another week?
Z: Don't think so. I was showing Asfand this morning's ultrasound results and the babies look to be about 2.5-3 lbs each. She's severely anemic and the bleeding is concerning to me. Don't want her to lose too much blood between now and next week.
Dr. Asifa: That's a good call Zubiya, ideally I would prefer them to be at least 33 weeks gestation but we can go ahead with it tomorrow if you think it's best.
A: What about monitoring for another couple of days and if the babies become too distressed, we can go ahead with a C-section.
Z: Aap to ja rahe hain kal raat 2 din ke liye, What if I need you during or after surgery? I want to deal with this while you and Dr. Asifa are both available. Sabeena felt there was something different about Zubiya's tone, it sounded informal like a personal complaint. Asfand looked at Zubiya's face for a second before saying "theek hai, inform the family and start prepping, we can schedule it for tomorrow morning"
S: But sir, shouldn't we wait a little bit more? The babies have a high risk of complications, infections at this time. According to my knowledge It would be best if they were delivered at 34 weeks at least.
A: Dr. Sabeena, perhaps this is a question Dr. Zubiya can answer better for you. My understanding is that the risks to Rehmat bibi's health outweigh the risks to the twins. Dr. Zubiya and Dr. Haroon will be working together once the twins are born tomorrow Insha-Allah. It would be a good opportunity for you to observe how their progress is monitored in the NICU and how things such as apnea, jaundice are managed.
Sabeena was not pleased that her suggestion was not considered so she got up reluctantly with Dr. Asifa to leave. She realized that Zubiya did not leave with them
Z: Bechari ka dil tor diya apney.
A: Kiska?
Z: Dr. Sabeena, ap ke liye lipstick fix karkey ayi thi. Uski suggestion to sun letay.
A: What? That's ridiculous! He looked at Zubiya incrediously.
Z: Seriously? Ap ko nahi pata chalta jab woh ap ko dekh rahi hoti hai? She's obsessed, har wakt pochti rehti hai Dr. Asfandyar kab ayengey? I have heard her gushing with the other two girls, mere samney nahi karti. Not sure if it's because I am her senior or she knows I am your wife. I think you should start wearing your wedding band.
A: Interesting!! So you don't think she knows we are married? You're possessive and jealous, both of which quite sexy on you. He said mischievously as he leaned back in his chair to look at his wife's reaction.
Z: You don't believe me? Theek hai you will figure it out soon enough and then I will make you wear a badge that says "Zubiya's" on your chest. Asfand laughed at his wife's bizarre demand while Zubiya sat there looking unimpressed.
S: How can you have so much chai, I keep my caffeine intake in check. I am done having my caffeine for the day
Staff room.
Zubiya was making chai for herself and Gaiti when Dr. Haroon and his trainee Dr. Faris walked in. Sabeena was sitting there scrolling through her phone. There was a PSL match playing on TV between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars.
Z: Or kisi ko chai chahiye?
F: I would like some please. Naiki or pooch pooch
Z: Haye! I love chai, Zubiya said as she handed Dr. Haroon, Dr. Faris and Gaiti their cups and sat down with her chai.
F: Hum Karachi walon ko chai bahut pasand hai. Us per sey agar United yah phir Dilpasand ka samosa hota wah! Ap ney try kiya hai Dr. Zubiya?
Z: Yes!! Jab main parhti thi to meray Abbi mere liye latey thay United key samosay.
F: Cricket match, chai or ek khoobsurat larki sey meray pyarey Karachi ki baatein. Maza agaya!
Dr. Faris did not realize when Asfand had walked in and had heard his comments.
A: Dr. Faris agar picnic khatam ho gayi ho to bed number 9π ki blood work reports dekh lein. Poor guy got embarrassed and put his cup down quickly before rushing out. Zubiya and Gaiti looked at each other and Zubiya rolled her eyes exasperatedly. Asfand walked towards the tea/coffee station and started looking through the cupboards.
A: Zubiya brown sugar nahi ayi? Zubiya, who was looking at something in a magazine with Gaiti, looked at him like saying "why are you asking me, I am not responsible for refilling the supplies here!" before turning back to her magazine without actually responding to him.
DrH: Thori bahut medical knowledge to humein bhi hai Asfand, aj regular cheeni sey coffee pee lo tumhara daily carb and calorie chart off balance nahi hoga.
S: I would rather drink black coffee than put any of this processed sugar in my coffee. So bad for you.
DrH: Yahan hamari nutritionist magazine main latest Maria B designs dekh rahi hain or wahan ek bechari trainee ko surgeon sahab ko dietary advice dena par raha hai.
G: Asfi! Seriously thori se cheeni pee lo gey to I promise you will feel better. Yeh jo tumhara karwa attitude hain na thora better ho jayega. Gaiti looked up at him and said before going back to pointing out the latest colour combos to Zubiya.
S: Sir let me make some black coffee for you and me. I promise it will be best one you've ever had. Lahore main me and my coffee were famous among my friends and family. Zubiya's head shot up as Sabeena jumped out of her seat. Zubiya looked at her husband and raised her eye brows as if asking "Really!?!?! how much more desperate and obvious can she be"
Asfand looked at her and gave a half smirk before saying "That would be really nice, thanks Dr. Sabeena!"
Asfand sat down beside Dr. Haroon to watch the match as his coffee was getting ready.
DrH: Kia lag raha hai yaar kon jeetay ga?
A: Hmm my bet is on Karachi, let's see. He eyed his wife who heard every word and smiled into her magazine.
