Chapter 1B: Tej Singh Oberoi and Jahnvi Raaje

Kalyani and Prithviraj Oberoi's first born was truly a symbol of their love. Fair skinned and dimpled, he was a lot like his father. Much to Kalyani's disappointment his eyes were black, her own, how she wished he would get those blue-green eyes.

They named him Tej, he would certainly make them proud said Prithviji. He was right you know. It seemed to Kalyani that Tej was born with a very strong moral compass. From when he learned to speak Tej made it very clear that he never lied and above anything else he hated being lied to.

Kaylani was startled one day when the usually obedient and easy going Tej started talking back to Prithviji. Tej was 16 and Prithviji insisted it was all a part and parcel of being a teenager. But Kalyani was upset, She hated to have her Prithviji disrespected. Upon some cajoling Tej revealed that he witnessed Prithviji arm twist a contractor for a piece of land that he had his eyes on. "How can he do this ma?, that land was not rightfully ours. Kaylani sighed, she dreaded this. Much as she loved Prithviji, she did not approve of all he did. She knew he had to use the backdoor in some of his business transactions. He was not happy about it either, but he never caused any criminal harm to rise up the corporate ladder. This knowledge kept her happy. Tej however would have none of this. His morals conflicted with his father's actions and started to drive a wedge between them.

Tensions and tempers began to rise among father and son. In order to preserve her sanity and to stop the father and son bond from deteriorating further, Kalyani suggested that Tej apply to Harvard. Tej was intelligent and well read. He played the piano wonderfully. Always top of his class he was sure had the grades to get in. Tej was happy as well, anything to make his mum proud!.

Soon a 17 year old Tej landed in Boston, in the fall just as the leaves turned a golden yellow. Tej took to Harvard like a fish takes to water. He excelled there in just about anything he set his mind to. His letters to Kalyani were full of hope and excitement. Kaylani on her part was very happy, "This experience will change his life she said to Prithviji, little did she know that it would change him yet, but not the way she wanted him to.

A 20 year old Tej in his Junior year, met Rukmini Zhaveri and fell head over heels in love with her. He was an Ishqbaaz like his mom and resolved to make her proud. Alas Rukmini was nothing but a vain socialite. She was fascinated by Tej's naivety and kept up with him as long as she fancied. However once she was bored, she mercilessly ripped apart young Tej's heart. She mocked him for being nouveau rich and a fledgeling, his family was but a pawn in a big game in which hers was royalty.

Like most young people who get over bad breakups Tej did not. Betrayed by his father, his love and his believes, Tej was altered. He resolved to teach Rukmini a lesson first. He would chase and marry some one who was much above Rukmini's standing. That someone was Jahnvi Raaje. A true princess of the Raaje family who was beautiful, smart, quiet and a student of the arts.

Though Jahnvi suspected Tej, she could not resist his charms. Her parents were happy as well. True, they were royalty but their coffers had long ago depleted. In Prithviraj and Tej they saw undeniable potential. Prithviraj was happy as well. He was happy that his son now saw the way of the world. Kaylyani disliked the change in Tej, She adored Jahnvi but she dreaded this marriage. Ted's eyes once clear as crystals were mysterious now. She saw love in them, but it was selfish. Jahnvi seemed to know yet she seemed not to care. Well she was a true Ishqbaaz at least thought Kalyani.

Tej and Jahnvi were married. The marriage though tumultous and resulted in three adorable kids. As the kids grew up their parents grew apart. Tej slighted by his peers was determined to out do every single one of them. Rukmini crushed his heart, which was repaired by Jahnvi to a great extent, but the moral compass was gone. With his ascent into the corporate world started his descent into the realms of deceit and connivery. Kaylani and Prithviji were sad, but there was not much they could do.

Jahnvi like true nobility bore it well. This was particularly hard for Kalyani who wished she would just leave. But the noble girl assured her mummyji that Tej could be saved. She would save him. Kaylani warned her that she may lose herself in her quest to save Tej. But she didn't care.

And so Kalyani let Jahnvi lose herself. She hated it, but like Jahnvi said, it was her way of being an Ishqbaaz. Jahnvi never prayed for herself or Tej. She could handle anything that he threw at her. However, Jahnvi prayed for a miracle to repair the fragile father and son relationship between Tej and her first born Omkara, who was exactly that Tej who was now lost.

Little did Jahnvi know her prayers would be answered by Shivay and his Ishqbaaz. Shivay her son more than her nephew would be the one to bring back Tej. But she did not know that yet.

Chapter 1C: Shakti Singh Oberoi and Pinky Chaddha

Shakti Singh Oberoi, the second child of Kalyani and her Prithviji was an image of his mother, much taller though. Alas neither did he inherit his father's eyes. Shakti's eyes were black like Tej's but sparkled with mischief. Years later young Rudra Singh Oberoi would inherit both the eyes and his uncle's spirit.

Tej excelled at almost everything leaving little burdens on Shakti. Since Tej always came first, Shakti did not have to bother himself about coming first. Since Tej broke no rules, Shakti had no qualms about bending some. Tej was uptight, Shakti relaxed. Tej's room was organized and perfect, Shakti's was jumbled and colorful. Though half as handsome as Tej, Shakti was twice as charming. It was no wonder that Shakti was a hopeless flirt.

Shakti saw first hand what Harvard had done to Tej and chose to go to Berkeley instead. Lesser pressure he said. In school he got involved with the hippy movement and declared himself to be one, much to his brother's disgust and mother's amusement. Upon graduation, though he no longer wore his hair long and colored, he had slowed down. Yes, Shakti was not interested in chasing numbers like Tej.

Once on a trip to their village with his father and reluctant brother, Shakti set eyes upon Pinky Chaddha, yes, daughter of that dimwitted Sumeeta who married the handsome Chaddha boy. Pinky was beautiful, not regal the Jahnvi way but was beautiful nevertheless. Something about her weird antics made Shakti's heart skip a beat. They were married really fast and soon Pinky Chaddha was on her way to Oberoi House. It was still a house then.

That Pinky felt out of place in Oberoi house was an understatement. Sure Mummyji and Papaji made her feel at home. Mummyji in fact was her mom's friend. Jethji was cold, but he was cold to everyone. However, Pinky felt painfully aware of her limitations when she first saw Jahnvi. Tall, beautiful and eloquent Jahnvi commanded respect which came easily to her. Pinky was humored, but never taken seriously. Jahnvi could make heads turn, but Pinky, well she just set tongues wagging. Jahnvi for her part loved Pinky like her own sister. Pinky knew it, but could never reciprocate it. This made Pinky hater herself even more.

Additionally Pinky had to scale up to her new sasural. Her house was big, but Oberoi Home was huge and rapidly expanding. Pinky's mom commanded the social circles of her little village, but here Pinky was forever in Jahnvi's shadow. Pinky grew up in luxury but now had to get used to opulence. Pinky's censure of her self soon distanced her from Shaktiji.

Shaktiji was tired having to constantly reassure Pinky of his lover for her. He was tired trying to explain to her that no one thought less of her when she couldn't speak well in English. He was tired of asking her to chose her sympathy for Jahnvi Bhabi over her jealousy. Soon he gave up!. He was happier carrying out the smaller businesses for the empire that was now rapidly growing and demanded his attention. Pinky got lost as well in her self pity and self sympathy.

Pinky and Shaktiji would also come close, thanks to the Ishqbaazi of Rudra and Saumya. But they did not know off it yet.
