Damned if you do, damned if you don't. People are always complaining when celebrities don't speak out, they are bashed for their dishonesty when giving statements, and here a celebrity speaks out and is deadly honest, and he is bashed for his honesty. You all are never happy.

I support Abhay 100%. India's obsession with fairness is so bad that my white professor in Canada - who is a well respected man with a PhD - spent some time talking about it in class, and so randomly too...wasn't really a part of the syllabus. If people like him can realize the problem and address it, then there really must be something there no? Keep doing you Abhay!

I think people are confusing the issue here
Its not abt regular girls and boys using fairness products to become whiter or whatever...its their personal choice
Its every woman's or man's right to use whatever products they want to enhance their looks or personality if they believe they need it.

But its the CON GAME, the SCAM by the companies selling these products when they hire stars to endorse these products, when the ads say that using these products will make you more successful in life, will make you like that star, will make u so attractive u will have thousands of admirers like that star...THAT IS A CON, That is fooling people into buying with FALSE PROMISES and THAT is what is OBJECTIONABLE!

Sell whatever beauty or fairness products you want to, but dont CON people into believing those products will make them more successful or get married or whatever Lies you want to sell.

The next time you meet your professor you might want to confront him on following facts, since he is making this India specific.
  1. The Skin colour obsession is global...the white skinned want it tanned and brown, yellow, black skinned want it fair.
  2. The fairness obsession is not just India, but across Asia & Africa...fairness creams & Soaps sell like hotcakes, be it Middle East, India , Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines etc in Asia (The only exception being Korea & Japan)...The Cream/Soap sell in Africa despite lower efficacy on Negroid skin type...be it Egypt in North or South Africa in South.
  3. In terms of per capita consumption, India is certainly not no 1 (also because of lower purchasing power)
  4. The maximum spend on skin enhancement & correction is in the middle east...mainly in Levant countries...and specifically among Lebanese, who will starve for a year but will make sure they have saved enough money for skin therapy.

Having said that...I agree there is a fairness complex among desis (like many other nationality)...its a cultural issue one cannot deny ...the British rule propaganda on white supremacy could be the prime reason behind it... but certainly not a recent phenomenon driven by entry of fairness cream.

Correct!! ...the issue is all about misleading ads...be it fairness or any other product

Marketing is one hell of a con job ...and the irony is that the con artist get paid the most.

Since there is no pre-approval process or censorship for ads currently...all actions will be post facto...as a short term solution, govt should set up a tribunal to settle these issue...the actions would be faster and ads can be withdrawn in a short span before they reach larger audience

For long term the govt needs to have a pre-approval system which will screen ads before going on air.

These tweets, FB post & Discussion on news channels are just IM...nothing ever comes out of it.

I agree with you completely, aren't all adverts sell false dreams?
Why single out fairness creams? Coldrink adverts make us believe that by drinking Pepsi, we can bring revolution in world , point in case Kendall Jenner's pepsi advrt .

If skin color is something that we don't have any control over, so are our features. We don't choose our features.
So that's also discrimination.

In short, the whole concept of a certain type of beauty is flawed. If you judge someone based on skin color or features, that's wrong.

While I agree with the essence of what Abhay is trying to convey , i think it has spindled out of control & into a weird direction in this forum ..

@ Blue : Respectfully disagree .. what features we find attractive/appealing or unattractive/unappealing in another person isn't something which we 'decide' or 'choose' to do.. it is an involuntary natural instinct .. and that largely determines one's own definition of beauty .. you cannot just kill these natural instincts for the fear of being deemed a racist or a superficial human being .. that would be wrong .. it is like asking a gay person to be a straight person & vice versa - its just not possible & it doesnt need to be that way either .. there is nothing wrong with having a 'preference' .. if someone prefers black or brown girls over white or vice versa - it is just a preference , putting a different spin on it will only complicate things unnecessarily..

Abhay is making a point about the internalised racism in our country which is true .. all those cosmetic giants combined with influential celebrities only make it worse .. it needs to be curbed & a healthier mindset needs to be encouraged among the general population .. you can have a 'preference' for light skin without disrespecting darker skin & vice versa .. lets not confuse one with another ..

All things done & said , a healthy even toned skin will be preferred over the colour - black , brown , white , yellow whatever .. nothing we can do about it , except try & maintain ourselves the best way we can in this ruthless judgemental world .. 😆

Agree. We're reaching a point where everyone wants everything to be considered beautiful. But when everything is beautiful, nothing is. You can't demand that certain things be considered attractive to everyone. If someone likes light skin, you can't insist to them that dark skin is beautiful and they're prejudiced and racist for not wanting to marry a dark skinned person. Romantic attraction especially can't be controlled in that way.

Whether someone likes big or small noses, tall or short heights, skinny or fat people, light or dark skin, it's their prerogative. Society will always have some preferences and when you don't fit into those, it can be frustrating but you can't force anyone to like everything.
