About Kartik's promises I think @ Sugarpuff101 has answered it really well

Kartik is just a victim of his own circumstances.He trusted Tai blindly cause she helped him when he was all lost.Hence he respected her so much & it's not easy to suspect one's blood relations

Again Tai has been really way ahead of everyone in her game.It's not easy to know what she is upto
