Talia, it is not that I do not enjoy reading dark fantasy, I can be practical about it and am aware that when it is dark fantasy it would involve a lot of gore / rape / plunder/ bloodshed, even the Malazan empire series is a dark fantasy - the first chapter itself has a few villages wiped out - mauled to death by hounds.
But what the reviews that found the black company books to be bad mentioned - was that POV was irritating (first person which is also not my personal favourite) and most importantly the language syntax - it reads more like a "to do list" (you know that one you would prepare in your head if you had to do a lot in a very short time and would go like this: - boil milk, put clothes in washing machine, make note to call the gas agency for replacement etc) it is good for your personal planning but not when you write a book series. There were tons of goods reviews too, but I usually read what people say is the worst, it is easy to read for the good points, but if I agree with what is bad, then it is a tough read. And believe me, I could not read the full of Chapter 1 itself.
In the Malazan series the complaints were too many characters introduced in the very beginning, too many deep POV (though in third person) and a slightly confusing people / culture / gods hierarchy. I agree with those yet in spite of that I managed to finish off around sixty pages in one day, which means I will continue to read. Hence the switch.
It is not needed, for I am not endorsing either of the series, and the switch makes it a classic Mary Sue syndrome symptom, but then I felt better replacing it😳
Progress - well I seem to be putting in more words as my self imposed deadline approaches😆😆 Hoping for either November 1 or November 6 (which is the anniversary of the date I joined😆) I also would prefer making a new thread for book #2 , I could fit it in the balance pages left in this thread even if I have four parts for each of the chapter and additional posts for all the other stuff I would not need more than 50 to 60 posts which would be around 6 to 7 pages, but somehow, I am tempted to have another thread
