Pratyusha Banerjee's Death Reveals The Sad State Of Our Media
Television actress Pratyusha Banerjee is no more. She is no more there to put a stamp on the millions of things that are being said about her, her life, her family, her parents and also her financial condition. And when there's no one to testify or confirm, it becomes easy to form an opinion. Social media is all about opinions. 50 people come together, trend a certain subject based on their opinion and the opinion becomes a news. It was disheartening to see some of the websites hand picking few of the trolling tweets on the deceased actress and making a YouTube video out of it. What are we doing in the name of making news? I understand it is necessary to publish updates regarding a trending topic on internet, that's how this business runs but deliberate insults need not be handpicked in the name of news!
I also got quite a shock when I came across another article that brashly questioned the talents that have landed in Mumbai from the state of Jharkhand and termed them all as failures. The article mentions the name of quite a few successful and popular actresses apart from Pratyusha Banerjee (who hails from Jharkhand). It is quite shocking how people go on to write big and illustrious articles without really researching. It's sad that most of these websites do NOT cover television celebs or shows for half the year (except for the time when any keyword trends on Twitter, FB or Google). But whenever some breaking (read - bad or scandalous) news comes up and that shakes the nation, they are left with no option but to cover it. And in the process, they end up covering the stories without any research or knowing anything about the background of the celebrities. And hence they use phrases like was under depression', was a failure', couldn't handle fame', small town actors failed in big cities' and of course according to credible sources' are also there.
Also some of the celebrities are there who just want to enjoy this temporary limelight on them. Just like some filmmaker suddenly tweeted about how he would have produced an entire film for Pratyusha had he known about her financial crisis. Wish these sudden cropped up friends of Pratyusha Banerjee showed little maturity while giving statements instead of spreading rumours that has befogged the matter and made it worse.
In the name of publishing news we don't cringe before releasing an audio that has a mother crying and weeping terribly for her only child. No body even winced. Neither the one who provided the audio nor the ones who published or aired it. There was absolutely no necessity of making the nation hear how Pratyusha Banerjee's mother cried for her daughter on the night of her death but it was there just to sensationalize the dead girl's demise.
The very dramatic' Rakhi Sawant also didn't forget to add her share of drama here. She made a mockery of her death by bringing a ceiling fan at a press conference and demanded from the Government to replace all ceiling fans by air conditioners to avoid any suicide further. It's sad and extremely sad how some of the celebrities are leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the limelight after the death of actress.
And this sensationalisation doesn't stop here. With time more and more rash and recoiling headlines are cropping up which shows how lamely stories are written, published or aired these days without even going through any primary research or homework. A big headline has been made about Pratyusha Banerjee's loan of Rs 50 Lakhs and that she was unable to repay it. But no one bothered to talk that she just probably needed to work for 50 days to return that amount with interest to the bank. For an actor of her stature on television currently, the amount isn't too much. May be the reporter who decided to make it a breaking news didn't have an idea about the payments an established television actor receives these days. Or they are only of the opinion that only Priyanka Chopras and Deepika Padukones can get a 50 lakhs loan from bank. Even the father of the prime suspect, at one moment said to a channel sitting at his Ranchi house that Pratyusha paid an amount of Rs 80 lakhs as income tax and the next day in Mumbai he says, he transferred 5,000 to 10,000 rupees to her account as she lacked money. No one questioned or even highlighted why such different statements came from him in a gap of one day? A girl who paid Rs 80 lakhs tax returns committed suicide for non-repayment of a loan of Rs 50 lakhs? It makes no sense or logic. Too much information and no one to clarify anything here. And this information overflow is creating a whole gap of information in the already confusing case.
In 2014, I got the opportunity to attend the Kolkata Film Festival where Amitabh Bachchan stated a very significant line in his speech. He said, "We live in a world overflowing with information. But we seem to face growing scarcity of wisdom. And worse is that we confuse the two. This barrage of readily available information has also created an environment where one of the worst social sins is to appear uninformed. Ours is a culture where it is enormously embarrassing to not have an opinion on something and in order to seem informed, we form our so called opinions hastily".
Social media or Twitter is a mirror image of this entire quote said by Amitabh Bachchan two years ago. No one knows anything but still opinionated tweets are made. Rash and reckless comments on Twitter shows the inhumane side of the humans out there. And it becomes more pathetic when some portals handpick such insults thrown at a deceased person and publish them in the name of news.
Pratyusha Banerjee was one of the most prominent names on Indian television. She was the Balika Vadhu' of Indian television whose smile reflected her on screen character's name Anandi'. She achieved success and proved herself as a credible artist in a span of only 5 years. She deserves respect. S
he deserves to be remembered with reverence. She deserves to go in a dignified way. Let us be considerate of what we are writing, the language we are using while writing and let the 24 year old rest in peace!
People make mistakes and then when reality strikes try to rectify them. Not every body are fortunate to have a God father or influential person every where. Here Pratyusha surely made wrong choice of friends but among them some were really genuine. She was trying to rectify her mistake and settle in life. Her only fault was she believed Rahul to be a genuine person and believed him, but when she found that she was being cheated and used by him she wanted to get out of the relationship, in this process she lost her life. But one thing is sure that she is a strong person, she really searched for help but that guy stopped and created a scenario and compelled her to suicide.
See her last pictures she has bruises on nose and cheeks. Any sane person will have doubts.
