Tuesday numbers are out and family-drama starring Alia Bhatt, Rishi Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan has continued its victorious march at box office everywhere.
On its 1st Tuesday/5th day at domestic box office, Kapoor & Sons earned Rs 4.50 cr, dropping just 10% over a day's passing and taking its total collection to an impressive haul of Rs 35.93 cr.
The film which opened to terrific reviews and audience's love, showed its strength at box office too by taking an opening weekend worth Rs 26.35, a figure put well above expected by trade pundits.
It was matter of test for Kapoor & Sons, whether or not the film could maintain its legs over the weekdays and it's Monday earnings are no less the indication for that matter. The film made Rs 5.08 cr on Monday, a number well comparative to its Friday business and the film ended up raking Rs 31.43 cr in just 4 days.
Now, the film was reportedly been made on a budget of around Rs 40 cr and it should cross that mark by today, recovering the cost. Not to mention the satellite and music rights already have been sold prior its theatrical release and the film is now on to profitable run at box office.

His landmark movie, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which released about 15 years was known for its typical Bollywood style melodrama, large mansions and overtly dramatic characterisation. The film mirrored the blatant economic divide of the time and was a perfect family potboiler replete with masala and songs.
Years later, the film looks obsolete and dated in today's time and age. It would be therefore super interesting to compare Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with Kapoor & Sons because hey, its all about loving one's family in the end! Right, KJo?
The Mothers: Jaya Bachchan's quintessential Indian Maa vs Ratna Pathak's feisty mom!
The scene where Jaya Bachchan runs towards the door of her palatial home with an aarti ki thali to welcome her beta Rahul, played by Shah Rukh Khan, is almost etched in our memories. Compare that with Ratna Pathak's flawed, feisty avatar in the delightful Kapoor & Sons. Everything about this mom scream REAL. There is no pretence, no holier-than-thou image associated with her. She is grappling with pertinent problems which engulf her in every walk of life. Leaking pipes, failed marriage, skewed relationship with her sons and the constant financial insecurity are her issues as oppose to this, Jaya's issues in the movies look pretty first world. No?
The Fathers: Amitabh Bachchan's rigid, millionaire act Vs Rajat Kapoor's angry, imperfect stance
Amitabh Bachchan in the movie is an unmoving, multi millionaire (mostly categorised as bourgeois) dad who can't respect and trust his sons' choices because, parampara and pratishta (you know!) Rajat Kapoor in the Kapoor & Sons is pretty messed up himself. He knows he has failed as a husband and can no way fulfill the traditional role of the provider' to his dysfunctional family. This awareness eats him up and lets us see the range of emotions from anger to regret layering his character. It is treat to watch Rajat and his vulnerabilities coming to the light as opposed to the rigid, one dimensional character of Amitabh Bachchan in K3G!
The Brothers: Sidharth and Fawad's sibling rivalry VS Shah Rukh and Hrithik's saccharine sweet act
Shah Rukh and Hrithik are brothers who get separated due to unfavourable situations. But even when they are not, Shah Rukh's Rahul makes unforgiving fat jokes on Hrithik's Rohan who takes all that and still WORSHIPS his beloved bhaiyya. Now, come on, who acts like that? who talks like that? Cut two: Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan's deep seated sibling rivalry and bitterness peppered with love and bonhomie for each other. Aren't all our relationships like that?
The Parents: Amitabh - Jaya's patriarchal relationship Vs Rajat - Ratna's bitter acceptance of togetherness
Picture this: Jaya stands on a stool to match up to' her husband and fastens a tie on his neck indulgently. She worships him, quite literally and frequently mouths Mera Pati Parmeshwar Hai' throughout the film. Can it get more patriarchal than this? Ratna on the other hand fights for her happiness and contemplates on having a life sans her husband. She is feisty and uncompromising. She does not accept the extra marital affair her husband is having just because he is a man. She is unafraid to voice her opinion.
The Couples: Shah Rukh - Kajol's sweet romance VS Alia - Sid's wacky admission of love
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's romance is as filmi as it gets. He earns the bread while she is a stay at home mom. Well, nothing wrong in that. But. it seems a little too stage in today's time and age. Juxtapose this with Alia and Sid's wacky date in the cemetery and their admission that they just fit in' together instead of the overly dramatic I love yous and I can't live without yous.
Well, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham appealed to that time and age simply because we, as an audience, were simply not grown up enough. Our economy had just opened up and badi havelis' and opulence still held allure for us. The fact that the producer like Karan Johar has invested in a film like Kapoor & Sons shows that we as a society and growing and opening up to new ideas.
So, in the end it is surely all about loving one's family but watching Kapoor & Sons is like waking up to a new reality. No family is perfect. Every family is unhappy in its own unique way. Right?
