Many films promise to be progressive, unconventional and realistic, but they fail to live up to the expectations. Well, Shakun Batra's latest offering may well be the most realistic flick of this year. Here's why!

Disclaimer: The post contains spoilers.

Non-pink wearing mainstream gay character:

Rahul Kapoor aka the perfect baccha of the family is battling demons of his own. He's gay, but nobody knows that. Yet. It's the first mainstream character in Bollywood to be gay without the caricatures attached to it. He doesn't wear pink, is not effeminate, and is as efficient as they come. Also, it helps that Fawad Khan plays that role impeccably.

Girl makes the first move:

The fearlessly independent Alia Bhatt makes the first move. She's also emotional when need to be and seeks Siddharth Malhotra's shoulder when in need. Just like you and I, she has many shades. She is not slotted into a particular stereotype, which is refreshing and applause-worthy.

Family dynamics are so damn real:

Whether it's the bickering between the couple of the siblings' unspoken rivalry, every dynamic is relatable and real. Our parents have fought before the plumber, our sibling has acted unreasonable and given us hell. Our extended families have tried to intrude...we can go on and on.

No sappy mom-son moments:

This is perhaps quite unlike the KJo brand of movies where there's over-the-top melodrama regarding mom-son. Here, the mother doesn't sugar-coat her words, doesn't hug and make-up immediately and is not afraid to show her true colours. Way to go, filmy ma!

Insecurities that are real:

While Sidharth is constantly trying to prove himself, his older brother Fawad is running away from a secret, and Alia is struggling to keep her vulnerability in check. The parents are fighting over finances and fidelities and the grandpa is bothered about not having a last picture with the entire clan. We all have insecurities and we deal them different ways.

But the biggest lesson is of the unpredictable nature of life...anything can happen. So however dysfunctional your family may be, keep them close.

Saw the film. Loved it!
All the actors were so good in their parts. Special mention goes to Fawad and Ratna Pathak whose performances as mother and son tugged at the heart strings.

Fawad Khan is brilliant!

I wont go into a detail interview but all I can say is that I loved the movie. After ages from KJo's camp a movie was made without any OTT or melodrama. Where all the characters were real and relatable, also were not perfect.

Spoiler

The scenes I loved the most was between Tia & Rahul, when they went for dinner and the all the things they did afterwards was ๐Ÿ˜†. Especially the fuse part. Also all the scene between the bros, the one when Arjun is teaching Rahul to drive ๐Ÿ˜†

For the performances my top most has to be a tie between Rishi Kapoor and Fawad Khan, these 2 are so natural when it comes to playing their characters. Then comes Ratna Pathak and rest of the actors, Sid M was pretty good in light part but he needs to work on his emotional part of acting. The scene between him & Ratna lacked the punch that required.

It has been a delight to watch the film, i went with low expectations, and thought that it would be another melodramatic film from Karan Johar, but it was surprising and refreshing to watch such a beautiful and realistic film.
TBH, i wanted to go to my mother and confess about my own mistakes and how i love her for her being so supportive of me through out my life. the film is an ode to a mother and child bond, everything was so much relevant.

Everybody performed effortlessly except Sid. Although Sid was pretty good and charming , i found him to be stiff and weak at his expressions at times, otherwise Arjun is a very lovable character and i felt for him.

The star of the film is Fawad Khan, and the soul is Ratna pathak Shah. What do i say about Rahul and his bond with his mother, i could not hold my tears, it was something so effective and heart breaking too. Their bond defined the expectations, the trust and the kind of strength a mother and a son has on each other, it was so beautiful to see that Rahul's true comfort, his strength was his mother. How good was Fawad though? not even one dull moment, it can be said that he improved in his acting or he was always such an impeccable actor, but in both the ways he was incredible. I think he must get a nomination and even an award if his luck is good. Ratna pathak Shah is brilliant in every frame, there is nothing i can add to boost up up performance's impact , it was so much better than annoying crying scenes of Jaya B in Kabhi khushi kabhi gham, it was so much better than the superficial Shefali Shah's performance in DDD, it is truly that great.

The director needs to direct some more films, he deserves all the praises, he is the captain of the ship, and he better gets some more films from Dharma.
