When Bachaana was first announced a year ago, it was not exactly the most-anticipated Pakistani film among the local audience. But just three days since its release, the film may have turned that sentiment on its head.
With the Mohib Mirza, Sanam Saeed " starrer sandwiched between two major cricketing events " the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Asia Cup T20 " there were concerns of Bachaana not performing too well at the box office. However, the movie has managed to punch above its weight.
Although an opening weekend a little in excess of Rs20 million will not break any records or make people sit up and take notice, a positive sign for the movie's stakeholders was how the film has shown tremendous growth over the course of its initial three days.
Talking to The Express Tribune, managing director of Mandviwalla Entertainment, Nadeem Mandviwalla, said the film fared impressively at both Atrium Cinemas (Karachi) and Centaurus (Islamabad).
Atrium Cinemas recorded an average occupancy of 54% during the three days, bringing the film's box office collection in the cinema up to Rs1.7 million. Centaurus, on the other hand, saw a healthy turnout of 81% between the same period, with its total collections amounting to Rs1.4 million.
"In comparison to other Urdu movies, Bachaana has surprisingly done better in Islamabad, given that Urdu films tend to do better in Karachi," said Mandviwalla, pointing out a common trend with local releases.
Judging by the positive word of mouth the movie has garnered during its initial run, cinema owners and producers are confident the film will pick up in the following week, especially given that there are no new major releases.
According to a representative of Eveready Pictures " the film's distributors " the real takeaway for them has been the film's growth on a daily basis. "Not just in Pakistan; the movie has shown tremendous growth in Dubai as well," remarked the official.
Interestingly, the 65% upsurge mentioned by the representative seems to have come on the day of the India-Pakistan T20 match. He added how they had accounted for the match in advance and had shifted a majority of the (Dubai) shows to the afternoon and evening timeslots to ensure that the screening of the film does not coincide with the Asia Cup encounter between the arch rivals.
Yet, even though the movie has done well in multiplexes, it has been unable to maintain the same form at single-screen cinemas. A prime example of this was Capri Cinemas, where the film performed at an occupancy of about 40% to 50%, with the high point coming on Sunday. Despite a dip in performance on Saturday across single-screen cinemas, exhibitors were not surprised, claiming that it was bound to happen given the excitement and hype surrounding the India-Pakistan match.
Having already crossed Rs20 million at the box office, Bachaana'sproducer Nasir Khan is optimistic the film's lifetime grossing would fall between Rs100 to Rs120 million.
Released across 83 screens in Pakistan on February 26, Bachaana is a comedy starring Mirza, Saeed and Adeel Hashmi. Directed and Produced by Khan and Rizwan Saeed, respectively, the movie follows the story of a Pakistan taxi driver, Vicky, and a newly-wed Indian girl, Aalia, on the run from drug lords in Mauritius. It is also expected to release in India as the Times music label, Junglee, recently bought the rights for the film's music distribution in India.

So many ppl from India, US and UK asking for Bachaana to release in these places. Hope it happens!
Bachaana has recorded decent numbers over the Week despite cricket fever and lock down at various places over the Weekdays due to Mumtaz Qadri.. Film did suffer over the Weekdays especially on Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday seeing a bit pick but still it was not a big pick as still there was lock down at few places.. Film was most effected at Islamabad where it had performed exceedingly well.. But business was overall low for all releases over the Week and it seems that film will see pick on day eight as it has retained good number of shows.. Film is heading towards 2nd biggest grosser of 2016 so far leaving behind films like Fitoor and Deadpool and Week numbers are 2nd biggest of year after Ho Mann Jahaan.. Film is set to be 2nd 5cr grosser of 2016.. Below is Week One daily business.. Friday.. 65lacs Saturday.. 70lacs Sunday.. 1cr Monday.. 22lacs Tuesday.. 24lacs Wednesday.. 28lacs Thursday.. 25lacs Total.. 3.34cr Film should cross 5cr mark by end of this Week and with no major film next Week again it seems it is heading toward 6 plus crores by end of third Week.. |
It is not damning Bachaana with faint praise to say that the best thing about the film is its length. Mercifully devoid of bloat and distracting item numbers,Bachaana clocks in at under 100 minutes at a time when three-hour snoozefests are becoming the norm. This is a mainstream movie that is secure enough not to try and be everything to everyone.
Directed by Nasir Khan, Bachaanais best enjoyed without thinking too much about the contrivances of its plot. The charming Sanam Saeed stars as an Indian who is in Mauritius for her honeymoon with her husband Adeel Hashmi. They are driven to their hotel by Mohib Mirza, a Pakistani cabbie on the island. Hashmi, in a rare dramatic role, turns out to be a drug dealer and leaves Saeed on her own and tells her to pack her bags and go to South Africa. Her suitcase is switched with one stuffed with drugs and a distraught Saeed turns to Mirza to investigate the true identity of her husband. You don't need to have watched too many films to know that Saeed and Mirza will eventually fall in love.
Bachaana moves at a brisk pace and, though implausible at times, the chemistry between Saeed and Mirza is strong enough to ignore plot distractions. Mauritius may not be the largest island in the world but the way the drug dealers chasing after our heroes seem to keep bumping into them defies all logic. There was no need to throw in so many twists and turns when the actors were more than capable of carrying the movie on their own shoulders.
The dialogue is surprisingly humorous for a movie that is ostensibly a thriller, to the point where it would not be too much of an exaggeration to call Bachaana a romantic comedy. There are some predictable jokes about Pakistan, India and cross-border romances but thankfully they are rare and the script is dominated more by character than stereotype.
The third undoubted star of the movie is the island of Mauritius. Bachaana does justice not just to its famed beaches but even to little details like its street lights and rolling buses. Some of the aerial shots used show this little slice of heaven at its absolute best.
The soundtrack has only three songs and all are used impeccably, although it is somewhat surprising that none of the three are love songs, given that the romance between the leads dominates the film. Still, it is refreshing for a movie to aim for mass appeal but not indulge in regular song-and-dance routines.
Nasir Khan also deserves credit for keeping Bachaana free of product placement. Too many movies are now little more than advertisements for carbonated beverages to the point where the purpose of the movie seems to be to push products first and tell a story a distant second.

@Bold - This is so true! Bachaana is a mainstream masala film and it is promoted in that manner, yet amazingly it does not take the route of the frills that are so associated with mainstream masala films and guess as the reviewer says that needs a lot of self confidence on the part of the makers to know that despite not including all that they can make an entertaining and successful movie. Hats off to Nasir and his team.
