Manish Raisinghani :

It's been a month now that this hardcore Punjabi munda of Teen Bahuraniya and Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhaan went vegetarian. And it's all because of a Rudraksha! Manish voices, "The change was brought out by the Rudraksha that I am wearing. My family was going through a tough phase health-wise this year and my mom asked me to wear it. As I am not too much into religious rituals, I was unaware that one must quite eating meat after wearing the Rudraksha. In fact, four days later my co-star warned me about it and since then I have given up eating meat."

So how does he avoid eating all the delicious spicy chicken curry served on the sets? He winces, "Well it has been a little difficult but I have tremendous self control. I relish the Masala milk and the fruit juices that are available in the studio canteen!

Now that's what we call being sporty. Anybody for health tips can approach Manish!

Betiyaan apni... loses the TRP war

Two shows based on the destinies of daughters slugged it out simultaneously on rival channels. While one is a hit, the other is being pulled off due to dismal TRPs.

A still from Zee's Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan

There has been a tug of war between Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan on Star Plus and Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan on Zee TV. In the struggle for existence, Zee's Betiyaan seems to have emerged a winner as the show is ranked second best on the channel after the hugely successful Saat Phere.

While Star Plus's Betiyaan, has fallen flat as it failed to appeal to the audiences. The show is going off air next month due to poor TRPs. Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan was shifted from Star One to Star Plus along with a change in its time slot. Both shows were launched about seven months ago and had a similar storyline but have different results.

Sunjoy Waddhwa, producer of Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan said, "The channel is reworking on its time slot so the show is being pulled off air. Also we are getting new concepts as a replacement for the show. I believe the TRPs of the show have been average. The show was shifted earlier from Star One to Star Plus which was an internal decision of the channel." Sunjoy adds, "Zee's Betiyaan was formatted differently and the war between both the shows was from the channel's side. We always wanted to wind up the show in 150 episodes."

The cast of Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan

For Dheeraj Kumar, producer of Ghar Ki Laxmiyan Betiyaan on Zee, the success of the show has been due to constant interaction between the channel and the production house. "I am not aware of Star Plus's Betiyaan going off air but all I can say is that our show has been a success from the start. Our storyline is very realistic. It has immense relevance in India. The story about women being neglected and tortured after marriage is a major issue even for the government. The look, set, costumes, music and most importantly the director of the show have been exclusive. We keep getting positive feedback and suggestions from the channel on a daily basis which makes us improve our show from time to time."

Manish Rai Singhani of Teen Bahuraaniyan, we all know is quite a prankster and his co-star Kadambari aka Janki will definitely agree with this. Once on the sets of the show, Manish was losing his patience when she wouldn't leave the make-up room fast. Manish quietly took a couple of puppies wandering nearby and put them into the room.

Kadambari, who is scared of dogs, shrieked in horror and immediately tried to leave the room but he had even locked it from outside. Finally she managed her way out but was furious. "I freaked out so much that I could have killed him. He is one big prankster. But it was funny at the end of it. I am quite comfortable with him as a co-star."

Manish Rai Singhania's driver dilemma

Manish Rai Singhania's erratic schedules may not be too much for him to handle but it's been causing the Teen Bahuraniyan actor's drivers to quit their jobs.

Manish, aka Sameer, works for about 20 hours a day. When he appoints a driver he informs them about his hectic shooting hours and work schedule. Even then, his drivers leave the job after day or two and in the past 15 days he has changed 4 drivers.

Manish says "I give my drivers a very good salary and I tell them about my schedule. When they join they think that I am just over playing the matter but after working for few days they get tired and run away! Now I am hunting for a new driver again.

Because I shoot for so many hours, the time I spend traveling to and from the sets is when I get to relax. At the moment I drive myself so I am very tired."

Not wanting to deter anyone away from being his driver, Manish jokes, "After reading this article, even those who might have applied for the job will think twice before becoming my driver!"

When the heat got to Manish!

Manish Rai Singhani who stars in Teen Bahuraaniyan and Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan remains so busy with the two that he works till he drops, literally! Recently Manish's diet and gyming went for a toss while shooting round-the-clock. His improper diet coupled with the heat made Manish very sick. But the shooting schedule did not permit him to rest. Now that's a perfect recipe for disaster! Manish continued shooting on steroids and almost collapsed on the sets whilst shooting. "It was a hectic shoot that day. Manish is a professional, once the camera started rolling, he was bright as a sunshine. His performance didn't really show he was actually sick. But when we realised he was over worked, as producers we were obviously concerned," says producer Hemal. A tense team asked him to pack off after he insisted on finishing the shoot and get some much needed rest. Manish immediately got himself hospitalised and then informed his family. Well this man sure does have his way of doing things!

Karan Mehra to join Barry John's theatre

Karan Mehra , who is currently in Virrudh and Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan is all set to rejuvenate his old passion, that is theatre. Not many know that the acting bug bit Karan early in his school days where he chose to be a part of the school plays. So much so that he was one of the eighteen chosen for a drama competition that was to be held in Russia. Karan has also undergone professional training in Delhi with drama guru Barry John in his institution Imago, and became the only one to be certified with 'A' grade. Although Barry asked him to stay back and polish his acting skills, Mumbai beckoned Karan.

And now he is glad Barry has opened up his institute in Mumbai (Barry John Acting Studio) which has given him the opportunity to train under him once more. "Barry John changed my perspective towards acting. He injected the love for the art and I think theatre is the best medium for any actor and the response proves to be an instant judgement as compared to television and films which tend to restrict an actor's expression," says Karan Mehra.

TV stars speak about their Papa the great

'One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters'. On Father's day, we asked some of our T.V. stars about their fathers.

Rupali Ganguly
"My father is my father, not my best buddy. He thinks I am the biggest duffer. I love him a lot, he is my idol. He scolds me even now and I am so scared of him, I don't speak a word when he is angry. He still thinks I need to be guided. He'll yell 'what the hell are you doing still acting, he thinks I should be a singer now.' When I starred in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai he said, 'You are very foolish in that serial and when I was doing Sanjeevani, he said, 'You are a vampire now and nobody will ever marry you.' Now he is recognized as Bigg Boss wali Rupali Ganguli's father. I am very concerned about what my father says about the way I act. Even if I am being paid 10 times more than usual for a serial and if my father doesn't approve of it, I would not do it.

I have inherited the quality of being independent from my father. I am also very straight forward and focused like my father. I worship my work just as he used to. I give 100 percent to all I do."

Varun Badola
Varun didn't hesitate one bit saying, "I drink with him, share all my feelings with him, good or bad. He is more like a friend and less like a father. I think I have all my father's qualities, I am very similar to him. I act, write, sing just like my father. It will take me years to find out and answer about what qualities I have inherited from him. He is 70, I am 33 and he was fine and successful when he was young and so am I."

Aditya Narayan
"I share a very noble relationship with my dad. I started working at the age of five and my father was also a very busy man. But we still managed to spend sometime together and it was very pleasant. It usually happens that a child has to wait for his father but in my case, it was my father waited for me.

I think simplicity and hard work are the qualities which I have inherited from my father. We both are very calm, simple and quiet and very rarely we get angry. But when we get angry it is very bad and so I try to keep my cool."

Priyanka Bassi
"My father is among the best people in this world. We share a very cordial relationship and I respect him a lot. However, I am not that open with him and cannot express myself fully in front of him, but we still are good friends. My father is very calm and composed. He is also focused and I have all these qualities. He has a very bad temper and cannot stand liars, just like me. I think sometimes you have to change according to the circumstances and I would like to change this quality of mine.

Manish Raisinghani
My father is my hero and I worship him. He is pretty open-minded but I am very scared of him. He still gives me pocket money and I give him all I earn. I am just like my father – hardworking and intelligent. One thing which I would like to change about me is my temper, which I also inherit from my father. My father is a perfectionist and so am I.

As Betiyaan Apni Yaa Paraaya Dhan comes to an end, Gauri Nigudkar looks forward to doing other things in life. We asked her what it is that she will miss the most about the show. "I am going to miss my co-stars like hell. Yes, all of them. They all had become like an extension of my family," she says.

When asked whether she thinks the programme lost out depspite doing well because of a similar serial with the same concept running at the same time, she replies, "No I don't think so. There are so many serials which have similar concepts. But the storyline, characters and characterisations — all were different on this show."

While recalling some of the funniest moments as a part of the show, she says, "Once I went to Sidhivinayak temple and many people came to me and started asking me about my marriage to Parth. It's funny how people think of your screen role as reality."

Though the show is winding up, Gauri has not signed a new project. "I haven't signed anything yet. I really don't know what I'll do next. I want to relax for some time and if anything nice comes my way I will take it up," she says.

On the news that the cast and crew ganged up and tore the shirt of the second unit director as they considered his shirt unlucky, she says, "Yeah Pradeep Yadav, our second unit director faced hell. We were shooting at that time and we all felt and decided that the particular shirt of his brought bad news. The technicians and unit members bought a new shirt and made him change the shirt and strictly instructed him not to wear it ever again on the sets. It was funny."
