Zee's 'Betiyann' clears telecast stay hurdle

Indiantelevision.com Team

(9 October 2006 8:00 pm)

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has refused to stay Zee TV's latest prime time launch Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, in a copyright infringement suit filed by writer Rekha Modi. She had alleged that the concept of the serial being aired by Zee originally belonged to her.

However, due to creative differences with Zee TV, she later approached Star India with the script. The Star One soap titled Betiyann - Apni yaa Paraya Dhan -- which is based on Modi's script -- is launching on 9 October.

Justice S J Vazifdar refused to grant any interim relief after Modi failed to submit proof of her rights for the concept. The Court also noted that, the copyright for the serial now belonged to the production house Creative Eye. Also, Star India is not complaining about any copyright infringement.

"The Betiyann concept is originally owned by Creative Eye and Modi couldn't produce any proof to support her claim. Hence, the court has refused to stay the Zee TV soap," said Zee Networks SVP Ashish Kaul.

Acting by chance

Krishna of Betiyaan wanted to be a chemistry professor but...

So we have another actress who claims to have been 'spotted.'

Gauri Nigudkar aka Krishna in Betiyaan-Apni Ya Paraya Dhan, wanted to be a professor in chemistry, but ended up being an actress by fluke.

Gauri says, "I have never circulated my pictures to any production houses. Although I participated in several school and college plays, I was never serious about acting. I have done masters in chemistry and wanted to be a professor. Both my parents are in academics – my mother is a chemistry professor and my father is a pharmacist."

But before she could manage a teaching job, Gauri was offered a role in Paraya Dhan. "My teachers and friends in college still think that I had auditioned for the role. But it so happened that my producer Sunjoy Waddhwa had spotted me somewhere and wanted me to play the role," she says.

Although Gauri couldn't be a professor in real life, she loves to teach her younger sister, whenever she is free.

Incidentally, her sister is also studying chemistry. Whenever I get time on the sets, I read chemistry books. This way, I can also help my sister," she says.

Love thy daughter!

AL Chougule
Posted online: Friday, October 13, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

Every woman dreams of a life of her own but her wishes are left unfulfilled when her family does not let her to pursue higher studies. The reason being, why spend on someone who will get married one day and leave home.
To clear the notion that daughters are a curse while sons are a blessing, STAR ONE has begun airing Betiyaan Apni Yaa... Paraaya Dhan from October 10. Screen visits the sets to find out more ...

Gauri Nigudkar
You are a post-graduate in organic chemistry. How did you stray into acting?
I was quite serious about my studies and wanted to become a professor and do my PhD in Chemistry. But destiny had other plans for me. I got the opportunity of doing a Marathi film, Uttarayan which went on to win the National award. After that, I did a couple of commercials and then offers for serials started coming in.
How was the experience of doing Uttarayan? What was your role in it?
I enjoyed doing the film. It dealt with two people who were friends in their youth but go different ways in life and meet again after many years. Their meeting revives their old memories and gradually they come close to each other again, which leads to a lot of introspection about their respective marital lives as well as the consequences of their relationship. Neena Kulkarni played the female lead in the film and I played the younger Neena.
You were getting a lot of offers for serials. Why did you choose Betiyaan ... in particular for your television debut?
The serial deals with gender discrimination in a middle-class family of seven siblings, six daughters and one son. I liked the subject because it has a social message blended into drama and entertainment. Besides I am playing the main protagonist of the serial. My character resembles Lord Krishna and since I am an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna I was really glad to play the role.
Is Krishna a rational person or is she a rebel?
Krishna is the eldest daughter in the family. She is quite a rational person and believes in doing things her own way. She is not the one to shout and argue but tries to adjust to the situation though she regrets the gender discrimination in the family. Every character has a definite point of view. Even the father who discriminates between his son and daughters has a point of view and justification for giving favoured treatment to his only son over his daughters. I like the character.
</>

You like the character because it has a definite point of view?
The character not only has a definite point of view but also lot of shades. Krishna is a focused and determined girl. She has an understanding nature and bonds well with her sisters, parents and brother. But at times she feels angry and some times she is vulnerable but tries her best to cope with situations for family's peace and harmony. But the message that comes out is quite clear. It is wrong to discriminate against the girl child.
Don't you think gender discrimination is an age-old phenomenon and is widely prevalent in urban and rural areas cutting across all sections and classes of society?
Yes, gender discrimination has been prevailing since ages and it's not going to go away unless the thought process undergoes a change and people realise that girl child is no less than a son. I think it's related to one's upbringing. If you are brought up in an environment where you are made to think that daughter is inferior to son, then the thought process passes on from one generation to another. It's not going to go away unless we change our thinking and girls are given every opportunity to empower themselves like boys.
Have you faced such a problem in your life?
My parents have been very supportive and gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted to. By the way I don't have a brother but a sister. But even in my extended family girls have never been discriminated against.
Do you feel the pressure of playing the lead role in your debut serial?
Yes, the pressure is there. Being a debutant in a daily serial I have to learn a lot and adjust to the demanding work schedule because initially it's going to be really hectic. May be with time the pressure will ease. But I am definitely enjoying my work. l
Rajeev Verma
In Betiyaan ..., you are playing a father who hates his daughters while his son is everything for him. In real life too, is that how it is?
I know what you are hinting at. I have two sons but my two younger brothers have daughters. I definitely craved for a daughter of my own.
How do you feel when you are enacting a scene where you have to talk harshly with your on-screen daughters?
I am an emotional person. Sometimes when the dialogues are very harsh, I question myself as to how rude can one be to utter even worse words to their own daughters. Sometimes I have a talk with the dialogue writer and try and make the dialogue sound less harsh.
How are your relations with your on-screen children?
I have built an excellent rapport with my on-screen family. Recently when we were on an outdoor shoot at Jodhpur it seemed as if we had all gone on an excursion. I will tell you something funny. My on-screen daughters pull my leg every time by asking me their on-screen names. Sometimes I am right, sometimes not.
Rekha Modi (writer)
Betiyaan Apni Yaa...Paraaya Dhan seems to be an emotional serial.
Yes, I was inspired to write this from the happenings in my family. My mother has six sisters and three brothers. And naturally, with nine children, there was financial crisis in the house. Thus my aunts and my mother were deprived of good education and were treated as paraya dhan while my uncles pursued their higher education. Having experienced this, my mother struggled a lot and yet saw to it that I had a good life. After I passed my SSC exams, my father wanted to stop my education but my mother put her foot down and compelled my father to let me pursue my studies. It was because of this experience that I decided to make a serial on the fate of girls in our society.
So, what's your take on the son-daughter issue?
The discrimination between a baby girl and a boy still persists. Don't people still go in for sonography tests to find out the sex of the foetus? Isn't it God's wish? Boys are spoilt because they are overtly protected while the daughters are left to fend for themselves. Today, times have changed. Where we have astronaut like Rakesh Sharma, we also had Kalpana Chawla doing all woman proud by going into space.
Tell us something about this serial?
...Paraaya Dhan is the story of six daughters and a son born into the family of Zamindar Neelkanth Chanda Rana, who rebukes his daughters because for him, they are a burden. He thinks that the girls have come into his life for only want of a son. The eldest daughter and the main protagonist, Krishna (Gauri Nigudkar) is akin to Lord Krishna and her character personifies the Lord's character like his depth of wisdom and breath of understanding. A simple, honest and principled girl, Krishna is the balancing factor amongst her sisters. All the protagonists of my serials are assertive of their rights and they also believe that with freedom comes responsibility. Betiyaan... may be considered the story of many a homes in the country where the daughter is looked down upon while son is given all the adulation.
Why did you take the backdrop of a Gujarati family?
I have found Gujarati girls to be to be both beautiful and intelligent. Moreover, a Gujarati subject adds an array of colours as its culture is varied and there are a lot of festivals that abound the state all round the year.
You are known to be closely associated with Zee. How come you chose STAR for Betiyaan...?
In fact, I initially went to Zee TV with my proposal. To tell you the facts, my proposal was accepted within fifteen minutes, but later something unforeseen transpired and I had no other option but to approach STAR.
Which other serials are you working on?
With so many serials in my kitty, I am being constantly flooded with offers but I have restricted my work. Working on any thing else distracts me and I am not able to concentrate on the first one. So, I am giving Betiyaan... my best.
Sanjay Wadhwaa (Producer)
How did Betiyaan... come to you?
One day I got a call from STAR. After the people at the channel's office briefed me about the story I immediately jumped on to making the serial. My first feeling then was that I must take up the story that talks of the current situation in the country. A message required to be put across to keep daughters on the same bandwith the sons.
Are you aware that Zee is currently airing something similar on the lines of Betiyaan...?
Yes I do. The story of this serial is Rekha's original concept. Our story is a completely chalked out. The people at Zee, keeping the content intact, have changed the story.
But isn't there going to be a copyright problem?
Even if there is one, we are not involved in it. The respective channels will fight it out.
Partho Mitra (Director)
Why did you take up an emotional subject?
I have done a lot of serials and films in the past. But I didn't handle one on any such subject - a sister-bonding saga. You must have noticed that earlier the crux of a serial would be male-dominated but now, every other serial is woman-centric. My serial has six interestingly different characters dealing with emotion. It basically focuses on everyday nuances in a family. It has been very interesting working with all these characters who are wholeheartedly cooperating with me.
Could you give details of the other characters?
Yes, the father is played by the experienced Rajeev Verma, Madhuri Sanjeev plays the mother and the daughters beside Krishna are Jyoti (Chand), Shilpa (Veera), Atishri (Gunjan), Snighda (Sanu) and Itishree who plays the blind girl (Koyal) who is a good singer. Nirvan, the son of the family, is played by Manish.
How did you get Betiyaan...?
Well, Sanjay is a good friend of mine. After narrating the script, he asked me whether I would be interested in doing the serial. I found the script very interesting and I agreed to do it. This show that has a massive production value is bound to create an impression.
How many episodes have you shot and how many have been allotted so far?
In all, we have shot about eight episodes and we have been allotted over 250 episodes.

Post Nach Baliye and then Star's afternoon serial Bhabhi we haven't seen much of Mannish Goyal. Somehow, the actor has been in the news only for his cold war with Anuj Saxena. And now it seems he has to be prepared for one more yudh! Recently Mannish had been roped in for Star's mega show, Paraaya Dhan.

The actor has also started shooting for it. But here's some inside news. A little birdie from the sets has tipped us that he was not the first choice. It was Gaurav Chopra, currently basking in the glory of NB 2, who was approached for Paraaya….. He was even scheduled to report for shooting last week. But Mr Goyal lobbied and networked for the role and because of his past affiliation with the channel (Bhabhi), he bagged it. We wish him all the best for his new assignment but we wonder if it will make much difference to his career as Paraaya….is entirely a woman dominated show.

Toon characters get a life
Nuzhat Aziz

Monday, October 16, 2006 18:10 IST

Telly land is going places. After an overdose of saas-bahu, comedy and reality shows; channels are now concentrating on shows which are indeed 'different'. After 'Prithviraj Chauhan' — a historical epic drama, 'Hatim' a fantasy show, the Sagars are all set to introduce a new format on television — that of a comic strip.

Producer Shakti Anand reveals, "After 'Prithviraj Chauhan', a costume drama, we decided to dabble in graphics for a science fiction thriller 'Antariksh'. Since I am an avid comic book reader, we decided to go a step further and do a show based on comic books."

The new show 'Lucky' (Star Plus) which will be on air next month is apparently inspired by comic books. "We have tried to create comic book characters in an action and adventure show. The characters are not inspired by one particular comic strip but will be a desi version with several funny characters around it. Apart from the main character Lucky, we have a pilot with a World War II aircraft and a 300-year-old ghost," adds Shakti.

Gautam Rhode who has been roped in to play the lead character says, "It's not a show about a super hero. I am sure the audience will be able to relate to the character because he is a normal guy with a good heart and wants to help people." Incidentally, Gautam has his hands full with 'Baa Baby Aur Bahu' and is also playing the love interest of Krishna in 'Paraya Dhan'. "I am working almost 30 days a month. But it's a lot of fun. Right now I have taken a break from 'Baa…' but might have to start shooting soon."

The actor says that he is enjoying doing both characters as they are quite different. "And I am confident that 'Lucky' will be quite popular despite the recent spate of reality shows and saas-bahu soaps. There is always an audience for fresh ideas," he concludes.

Act 3 for Rekha

Reena Thapar Kapoor

After the Smriti Irani fiasco, it was writer Rekha Modi's legal war with producer Dheeraj Kumar that kept her busy. Now, Modi is back in the news for her fallout with her co-writer Anand Rathod.

Anand was the dialogue writer for the four daily shows that Rekha was working for. And he is now accusing Modi for not having paid him. "Rekha owes me Rs 1 lakh. Everytime I call her for the money, she threatens me. In fact now she doesn't even acknowledge me and the work I did for her," he accuses. "Recently, she told someone that I was just a typist working for her. If I was just a typist, then I wouldn't be writing the screenplay, story and dialogues for a film starring Diya Mirza and Fardeen Khan," he says pointedly. Anand also claims that the concept of Star One's Paraya Dhan is his and not Modi's. "I told Rekha earlier that we should make a show that focuses on daughters. After I worked hard day and night on the subject she walked away with all the credit," Anand rues.

Modi vehemently denies the allegation. "Anand is a fraud. He has been blackmailing me for the past few months. He never wrote a single scene for my shows. To put the record straight, I'd like to say that I've cleared his dues. And if he is talking about sharing the credits of Paraya Dhan then I think he is hallucinating. It is completely my show. Anand and I use to work together in Balaji but because of his weird behaviour he was sacked. He is simply trying to get publicity at my cost," Modi says.

Star Plus to get Lucky with kids

STAR Plus is wooing the children in a big way. After Antariksh, the channel is all set to launch an adventure show. Starting November 4 at 8.00 p.m., Lucky produced by Sagar Arts Productions is touted to be an-out and-out adventure story packaged with a heavy dose of fun and entertainment. Deepak Segal, Executive Vice President, STAR India Pvt. Ltd, said "After launching Antariksh in the weekday 8 p.m. primetime slot, we are now excited to offer yet another show on the same timeslot on Saturdays for our younger viewers. Promising to create a sensation in the entertainment world, it's a story about a young man Lucky, who runs a fake antique shop in Chor Bazaar and has the simplest ways of living, i.e. conning people by selling them fake antiques and actually making them believe that the artifacts are genuine." Gautam Rhode who plays the title role, elaborates that "Lucky is a street smart, a confident and intelligent character, who loves life the way it comes until he gets to know about the 'Rakshaks' who were born for protecting sacred and priceless treasures and that now he is going to be the chosen one...the fifth Rakshak." Totally unprepared for such a news, Lucky refuses to go along with this silly thought inspite of the efforts made by Inder Mohan Sharma, a museum curator and Acharya Joshi, a 500 year old friendly ghost nonetheless, to convince him. "That's because my father who is supposed to have been the fourth Rakshak dies when I am a kid and so I am unware about it," informs Gautam. He is however a good guy at heart and when he told that there has been a big crisis he agrees to help. The task he is set out to do is find an anitque sword. Though reluctant at first, Lucky agree eventually because it will help him make a lot of money. Thus begins Lucky's new life as a Rakshak that takes him and the gang on an exciting journey and adventures." A one hour episodic, the show will have a new story and actors every week. Only the main characters of the show including Gautam Rhode and Inder Mohan Sharma played by Gyan Prakash Sharma; Captain Paswan played by Banwarilal Jhol & AJ i.e. Acharya Joshi played by Anang Desai will remain constant. The show is directed by Nissar Parvej.

Gautam who was last seen in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby as Anish recently entered Betiyaan Apni ya Paraya Dhan as Krishna's love interest Parth. With the title role in Lucky the the actor who prefers to keep a low profile will be seen in two serials simultaneously. "I am excited about both the shows 'cause both the characters are different from each other. While Lucky is a loud, brash character, Parth is a soft-spoken, reserved guy who is completely in love with Krishna," explains the actor.

Interview of the week: By A. L. Chougule

His journey and rise to fame in television-world is as interesting as the plot of a daily soap with myriad twists and turns. Running away from home to make a career in acting is not a stray happening in showbiz. There have been many such cases in the past but there have been very few successful stories out of run-away cases. Manish Goyal is one of the few such successful examples. He started as a spot boy on the sets of a sitcom, did music videos, cameo roles in serials and then all of a sudden graduated to bigger roles, thanks to the boom in daily soaps.

Struggling for bigger and better roles, his first step towards instant name and fame was Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. It lead to better roles in prime time shows like Kasauti Zindagi Ki, Bhabhi and Sara Akash. Next followed a long break from television. After an eight-month sabbatical Manish has finally made a comeback to prime time television in a daringly different role in Betiyaan Apna Ya Paraya Dhan, which he describes as his second innings on TV. His first innings went in establishing himself as an actor on television.

"It made me popular by the names of the characters I played, particularly Tilka of Bhabhi. Now I want to establish my identity as Manish Goyal and not Vedant of Betiyaan," he says confidently. Whether he succeeds or not is yet to be seen but Nach Baliye where he lost to Sachin and Supriya in the finals made him popular as Manish Goyal. "Though I was doing Bhabhi then people almost forgot Tilak. Nach Baliye gave me my own identity and standing as an actor and dancer," recalls Manish who took break from TV a few days after Nach Baliye went off air.

"I did 15 episodes of Bhabhi because that was my commitment to the show. After that I didn't want to play grandfather in the show's generational leap. It was too early for me to play an older character when I am getting roles of my age." And he did get several offers, all for lead roles. "I was offered Pyaar Ke Do Naam, Viraasat and many more. Ekta had offered me a new entry in Kasauti. But I didn't like the roles. I also didn't want to do two shows at a time. What I was really looking for was one good role in a good show. I waited because I was not in a hurry. Nothing sounded right till I was offered a role in Betiyaan. I heard the role but it didn't sound exciting. I had my questions and doubts but the channel and producer assured me that it would give me a complete change of image on TV," says the actor.

During the last four months he had worked on his look and physique and got himself a different hairstyle. And he is using his new look in his comeback show. "Vedant is a kind of roadside tapori who was born and brought up on the streets. He believes in creating his own destiny. He is not ill-mannered but stubborn and arrogant. The character has lot of shades but Vedant is a lovable guy who falls in love with Veera, the second oldest daughter among six sisters," elaborates Manish who did wonder about the character's importance and length in a story of a family with six daughters and one son.

"But when I started shooting I realized that Vedant is a very important character. I have one scene in each episode, to begin with. But that one scene is very crucial for giving momentum to the episode and the story." His eight-month-break was the best period of his life in Mumbai "I spent a lot of time with my son and wife Poonam which was wonderful," he says.

Shilpa ousted from Miss India

Kunal M Shah

Actress Shilpa Shinde has been thrown out of Miss India, a serial aired on Doordarshan. Apparently the producer of the show was tired of her tantrums and asked the actress to leave. Shilpa had been doing the show for over two-and-a-half-years.

Rupesh Gohil, the producer of the show informs, "Yes we had to thrown Shilpa out of the show because she was acting pricey. Shilpa had been doing fine so long, but of late, she had been literally harassing us with her unsolicited suggestions and by coming late on the sets. When I tried to speak to her, Shilpa was rude and wouldn't listen. Besides, Shilpa would often ask her dialogues to be changed according to her sweet will. That day when she came in late and insisted to change the screenplay, I told her categorically either to behave properly or to leave the show. I am glad my unit wouldn't have to suffer any more."

When contacted, Shilpa Shinde denies the news. She says, "This is not such a big issue. Since I am doing another daily soap, Paraya Dhan, I was having date problems and had to leave Miss India. As for my being rude to the unit is concerned, it is a lie. I have always adjusted my dates and always shot wherever they wanted me to. However I guess they simply didn't want to work with me and are coming up with excuses. I had requested them to shorten my track, but they never listened."

Gautam gets Lucky!

His good looks won him a host of ad films, music videos and television shows. And now Gautam Rode's luck has favoured him so he gets to play the lead in Sagar Arts Productions Lucky, a kids adventure show. Along with this action-packed series, Ba,Bahu Aur Baby and Betiyaan…Paraya Dhan

Gautam Rode: I am Lucky!

in his kitty, looks like he has now become Star Plus's favourite choice.
" When the story was narrated to me I liked it instantaneously. The show revolves around a guy and he's not a typical superhero. The show has got an element of fantasy and it's real at the same time as the hero, Lucky goes on treasure hunts and can't help running after money and girls. For me its a one hour complete masala entertainer," smiles Gautam who shares a great working rapport with the Sagars.

The actor claims that the Lucky will be a family show. Needless to say but the chocolate boy completely adores kids and enjoys playing with his nephews.
Gautam got a ligament rupture once while shooting for the show in Baroda but admits that such mishaps are bound to happen in such action-adventure shows.
In Betiyaan…Paraya Dhan Gautam plays Krishna's love interest(Parth).
Talking about his character, he says, "I play Parth, Krishna's love interest who is so very different from Lucky. He's reserved, thoughtful, not a flirt, well mannered guy who keeps blurting out lots of phrases. And I have some nice and interesting tracks lined up as the show progresses."
Not many know that Gautam has also tried his luck in films and had acted in U, Me and Bomzi. But the actor prefers to stick to television.

"The film did not do well, it had no push, got no publicity and we are no film stars to be able to pull crowds. Post the film, I got a few offers but they weren't worthwhile and television promises more quality work, so why settlle for bad films."

Here's hoping the actor gets luckier and gets to do much more in life!
