I apologize in advance and I cannot believe I am talking about a fictional show using Socrates and Pluto, this is supposed to be fun but the episode was so good, it made me think about love and marriage. You have been warned, read at your own risk lol
Also blame this post on GanBarunFan, she made me write this one 😳
Note to the makers: I enjoy a drink myself and I do not see anything wrong with Raman drinking but can we please for the love of all that is holy NOT HAVE HIM DRINK AND DRIVE! I know creative liberties and all but please this a prime time show, and people sadly get influenced by TV so let's be a little responsible. Sorry for the rant.
Stalk and Tree
One day, Plato asked his teacher, Socrates, "What is
love? How can I find it?" His teacher answered, "there is a vast wheat
field in front. Walk forward without turning back, and pick only one stalk. If
you find the most magnificent stalk, then you have found love." Plato
walked forward, and before long, he returned with empty hands, having picked
nothing.
His teacher asked, "Why did you not pick any stalk?" Plato answered,
"Because I could only pick once, and yet I could not turn back. I did find
the most magnificent stalk, but did not know if there were any better ones
ahead, so I did not pick it. As I walked further, the stalks that I saw were
not as good as the earlier one, so I did not pick any in the end. His teacher
then said, "And that is LOVE."
On another day, Plato asked his teacher, "What is marriage? How can I find
it?" His teacher answered, "There is a thriving forest in front. Walk
forward without turning back, and chop down only one tree. If you find the
tallest tree, then you have found marriage". Plato walked forward, and
before long, He returned with a tree. The tree was not bad, and it was not tall
either. It was only an ordinary tree, not the best but just a good tree. His
teacher asked, "Why did you chop down such an ordinary tree?" Plato
answered, "Because of my previous experience. I had walked through the
field, but returned with empty hands. This time, I saw this tree, and I felt
that it was the first good tree that I saw, so I chopped it down and brought it
back. I did not want to miss the opportunity."
His teacher then said, "And that is MARRIAGE."
Today when I watched the episode and cringed at a few scenes I had to remind myself of Plato and Socrates' teaching about love and marriage, and in my humble opinion this teaching about love and marriage fit perfectly to our beloved couple Ishra.
Socrates here makes few important points:
- For love we try to find the most magnificent thing alive and hence lose out on true love, because true love is in the eye of the beholder. A stalk magnificent to me might not be magnificent to others. Raman might not be a perfect man for many on the forum, but he is the most magnificent stalk in Ishita's eyes, and Ishita the most magnificent stalk in Raman's eyes.
- In our immaturity we search for perfection and err in love, and hence Pluto returns empty in search of love, Raman searched for perfection in the form of Shagun and returned empty handed. Love between mature adults is finding perfection in our imperfect partners, like Ishita does in Raman and like Raman does in Ishita.
- In marriage, Plato states that due to his previous experience he chops the first good' tree because he did not want to miss the opportunity. This marriage is a second opportunity at gaining love for Ishra, so they might not be the tallest' tree but are good' trees for each other. Marriage is a process of falling in love with all of your spouse and not a part that is most appealing.
Raman and Ishita might not be the most magnificent and/or tallest tree in the forest but they are good' trees for each other. Today Raman in his drunken stupor expressed his desire to be close to the one he loves the most, the one he craves, the one he wants to touch and the one he wants only for himself. We saw a husband being possessive, expressing his desires, and expressing his grief at the 'indifference' of his wife towards him. A man fighting with his past, walking with the crutches of alcohol towards his desire, his wife. His alcoholic tendencies and his behavior last night might not be very knightly but Ishita didn't fall in love and marry a knight she married a man who is her Hero. And her hero isn't a knight, he is man with many flaws, Ishita married the man and his flaws, now she is trying to fall in love with his flaws. She didn't have to deal with Raman in his drunkard state, she didn't have to answer back to his slurred speech, she didn't have to tolerate his alcoholic breath and those accusing eyes but she did! Love is often difficult, and very hard to navigate but we don't fall in love with the tallest stalk, we cut down the tree that is just about right for us and in our eyes that tree becomes the tallest' tree. Raman with all his flaws remains the 'tallest' tree in Ishita's eyes, and Ishita with all her flaws and her insecurities remains the 'tallest' tree in Raman's eyes.
Inspite of all the hate Raman has towards Ishita, he is unable to take his eyes from his 'tallest' tree. He opens the door to ensure she enters his house and remain close to him, he stares at the bracelet to remind him of her love and her 'betrayal', he keeps rubbing the bracelet to see if he can rub off the 'betrayal' but how can he rub off a smudge that exists in his mind.
Ishita on the other hand, far away from the crutches of alcohol wanted to be coddled by her mother today, she needed her mother's lap after she bore her husband's hateful rant, she needed her family's support to forget her husband's accusing eyes. Ishita being Ishita, still hurting decided to return to her husband to be his support not knowing that she is the medicine he needs to heal while she remains the reason he bleeds. The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.
