||My Abbu- Oneshot||
The walls were a painful white and the lights were a glaring yellow.
I squinted down the long corridor, my son and daughter walking ahead of me.
"Ayesha, Zaaroon" My husband whispered.
Both turn around, their eyes wide with fear and excitement.
"Remember what we told you na? Shayad tum unhe yaad na raho."
Ayesha nodded,her pigtails bobbing up and down.
Zaroon looked wiser than his ages.
"Ji abbu."
Ayesha came to me and held my hand and squeezed it.
"Yaad hai Ammi."
My heart burst with unsaid emotions because I knew she was scared, yet my child was reassuring me.
We approached a L-shaped desk at the end of the corridor that yet again forked into three.
"Yes?" The receptionist mused, with impeccable professionalism.
"We are here to meet Zain Abdullah."
She nodded curtly as she typed away in the computer.
"Room 415. Sign here please."
Farhan nodded slightly as he filled out the formalities as my heart started filling with dread.
"Down this corridor, first right."
Our footsteps echoed off the bare walls even though the floors were carpeted.
It sounded loud to my ears.
Dread had made its way permenantly into my heart and refused to leave.
Taking a deep breath,I twisted the door knob. It creaked a bit.
My dad was sitting on the armchair overlooking the window.
He seemed to be deep in thoughts but looked at us as we entered.
He looked confused and the dread increased.
But somehow he seemed to recognise us and smiled at me.
"Asmara?" He whispered.
I nodded and went forward to hug him.
Although his hair had greyed and his limbs were weak, his hugs felt the same.
And for a moment I was thirteen again, crying for I had failed my science test.
"Asalam walaikum Abbu." Farhan murmered.
Abbu frowned.
"Yeh hai kaun?" He asked, turning to me.
"Abbu,yeh Farhan, mere-"
He suddenly looked furious.
"Kaha tha na maine tumhe,no boyfriends until you are thirty."
I let out a dry chuckle.
"Abbu,I am thirty."
He looked momentarily confused and his gaze wandered to the twins.
"Aliya?" He gasped.
Ayesha looked at me. I nodded.
She and Zaroon went and hugged his knees.
"Main Ayesha Nanu."
"And I am Zaroon."
He pulled at Ayesha's pigtails, his eyes glazed.
Probably remembering Ammi.
"Happy Birthday Nanu."
His eyes lit up as he came out of his revive.
"Yaad tha tumhe?"
I smiled as they all settled on the bed.
"Abbu, I bought the photo album."
He smiled toothlessly at me.
And we sat there, sifting through the photos.
"Haha, Rizwan. He used to steal my PS3 everytime. Kaha hai voh aaj kal?"
Abbu, Rizwan Chachu is dead.
He paused.
Maybe it was Qatar then.
"Yeh dekho Aliya."
"Nanu,mein Ayesha."
"Nahi,photo mein Aliya."
"Abbu,that is me."
He shook his head stubbornly.
"Mein apne Mamu Ki Bhanji ko achi tarah pehchanta hun. Voh Aliya hai."
And just like that,I became Mom.
My eyes filled with tears as the visiting hour was over.
Or the nurse proclaimed
We weren't visitors.
I was his princess.
Farhan tugged at my hands, his eyes conveying.
It was time to leave.
My throat constricted as I hugged my Abbu again.
Suddenly I was thirteen again, crying for I had failed my science test.
And as we proceeded to leave, he whispered-
"Aliya nai aayi?"
And just like that,my heart broke into a million pieces again.
