He sat alone in a metal chair which was fixed to the wall.
Like all other black metal chairs beside him. The hospital floor gleamed a brilliant white, reflecting the dim yellow lights down the corridor.
He stared at the door opposite him.
20-B was engraved into the door.
The plate had a screw missing.
He could her the sound of shoes against the tiles.
It sounded loud in the deafening silence.
He felt someone touch his shoulder.
"You should be with her Zain. She does not have long enough."
And the tears which he thought were exhumed, threatened to spill again.
He nodded silently and with a great effort pushed himself of the seat.
He opened the door silently.
She was having difficulty in breathing. He could hear her across the room.
Composing himself,he went to her bed and stroked her forehead.
It was burning hot.
A small kissed her lips as she whispered-"Dada"
He wanted to scream. Ask his Allah to not take away his princess.
But he knew it was futile. His Allah had never listened to him.
He had taken her away too.
He slipped inside the cover and held his baby's quivering body close.
"Dada" she said again,a bit louder.
She choked.
"Shh." Zain said. It seemed like deja-vu all over again.
"Shh bachha."
"Dada, aap ro kyun rahe ho?" She asked innocently.
He gulped and wiped his tears.
"Main kaha ro raha hu princess?"
He could feel her trying to pinch his arm, failing by a long shot.
Her pinch felt like soft kisses.
"Liar." She breathed.
He took a deep breath composing himself for the umpteenth time.
He chuckled in an effort to make her smile.
The sound came out strange. Strangled.
"Acting nahi ati apko."
And the smile which he was trying so hard to hold turned into a frown in an instant.
"Dada?"
"Hmm?"
"Aap khush raho please" she wheezed.
He remained silent.
"Mein finally Ammi se milungi na? Dadi ne toh yahi kaha tha. Ammi aur dadu se milne jaungi" she coughed, clutching her chest in pain.
He sobbed and stroked her hair.
He felt her small palm move across his cheek that hadn't been shaved for days.
"Shh dada." She whispered, her breath growing loud and raspy again.
He held her closer.
"Apko yakeen haina? You believe me na? Mein ammi ke paas hi rahungi. No shaitani. I promise."
The tears were falling rapidly now.
"I'll miss you dada."
He tried to reign in the tears.
Tried not to break down in front of her.
She deserved a happy goodbye.
His sweet child. His innocent baby.
She deserved so much. So so much.
It was unfair.
"Dada?"
He did not speak.
He closed his eyes and kissed her forehead.
"Aap mujhe voh gana sunao na. Jo apne kaha ammi sunati thi."
He knew he couldn't. But he also knew he should.
"Sunaoge? Please?" She was breathing through her mouth now.
"Hmm." He murmered, composing himself for what he considered the last time.
"Aa-aa chal mein tujhe" he sang, way out of tune.
Mein leke chalu.
ek aise gagan ke tale."
His voice was rough, hoarse from not being used for days.
"Jaha gam bhi na ho. he paused.
Aasun bhi na ho." he sobbed.
"bus pyaar hi pyaar pale.
Ek aise gagan ke tale."
He felt her hand against his heart. He felt her lips moving against his chest, singing in an inaudible voice.
"I love you Dada. Mama does too." She said with extreme difficulty.
He did not stop singing.
And he laid there, for an hour and a half, singing Aliya's favourite song to their baby as he watched her slip into a slumber from -which she wouldn't wake.
