Mughal era cannon recovered from construction site in Mirchowk area

DC CORRESPONDENT | January 30, 2015, 06.01 am IST
Golconda Fort

Hyderabad: Sleuths of the East Zone task force recovered an antique cannon (artillery gun) possibly belonging to the 17th century from a plot of land while it was being dug for construction. The canon is suspected to belong to the Mughal era.

According to the commissioner's task force the artillery gun, possibly used by the Mughal Army during its attack on the Golconda Fort here, was found during digging for construction. Following an alert that the gun, weighing around 800 kg was found by workers employed by a contractor named Lateef at Nayapool in Mirchowk the police came and took possession of it.

"The cannon was probably a part of the artillery accompanying the forces of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb when he attacked Golconda Fort and succeeded in the second attempt in 1687 by defeating the last Qutub Shahi ruler Abdul Hassan Tanisha," said additional DCP N. Koti Reddy. The gun is 6.5 feet long and has a bore of four inches. It is made of alloys. It is quite advanced by the standards of those times, said Mr Reddy. Officials said it would be handed over to the Telangana department of archaeology.

Yes first cousin marriage was not common among Kshatriya clans but was common among the Mughals. Salim did marry his first cousin ManBai who gave birth to his first son Khusrau. Akbar was very keen on this match " due to her noble lineage" as per Akbarnama. This serial had made up a lot of things but the two things mentioned by you are historical facts 😊

But if cousin marriage was not common in Kshtriyas, how come Man Bai's father agree for this? This serial actually shows Man's crush on Salim, if cousin marriage was not common, how did she even think on these lines.

As far as I know in ancient times marriage of cross cousins (children of a brother and a sister, not children of two sisters or two brothers) were allowed (examples being Arjun Subhadra, Gautama Budhha aka Sidhhratha and Yashodara, and their ancestors) possibly this practice was still prevalent during Salim's time

I esp LOVED Dr.Lal's description of MUZ and her status in the Mughal court/palace. 👏 And Akbar's horoscope - which indicated the advent of HK in his life and with that, lots of kids and grandkids :))

Also liked the detailed map of Rajasthan :)

You have obviously spent a lot of effort in writing these posts - thank you so much! :)

Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh's neglected library may become tourist spot

Tuesday February 3, 2015 12:17 PM, Brij Khandelwal, IANS

Agra: The Uttar Pradesh government will renovate the neglected red sandstone structure here that was once the rich library of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's brother Dara Shikoh, a great scholar who sought to explore the commonality between Islam and Hinduism and translated Hindu scriptures, including the Upanishad, into Persian.

Dara Shikoh Library

Historians say Mughal history would have been radically different had Dara Shikoh, had he not been killed, ascended the throne instead of Aurangzeb.

The funds for the renovation project will come from the World Bank's tourism initiative. The principal secretary of the state government, Sanjeev Mittal, who was here last week, has ordered the conservation of the heritage library. Agra District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar has asked experts to draw up a plan which will soon be sent to the government.

Conservationists in Agra had long demanded the restoration and reopening of Dara Shikoh' library that has been in shambles in the heart of the Taj city.

"People may have forgotten about its existence. But during Shah Jahan's reign, it was a centre of scholarship and excellence," said historian Raj Kishore Raje. "Sufi saints and scholars regularly met and discussed mysticism and theology, with Dara Shikoh himself initiating the discussions," he added.

Dara Shikoh (1615-59) was Shah Jahan's eldest son and would have succeeded him but for being defeated in battle and then being assassinated at the instance of his brother Aurangzeb. This was during an intense power struggle following Shah Jahan's illness, leading to the emperor's ouster in 1658.

Dara Shikoh, whose name in Persian means "possessing such magnificence as Darius", set up libraries in several places including one in Delhi. But the best known library was in Agra, also called his haveli. It was taken over by the British in 1881 and became the Town Hall, according to the 1921 Agra Gazetteer.

Dara Shikoh was a great scholar of Persian and Sanskrit. Despite the ravages of wars and his involvement in a series of political and domestic crises due to Shah Jahan's ill health, he still found time to translate and write books. His chief mission was to explore the commonality between Hinduism and Islam and how the gap could be bridged.

Several important works, including the Upanishads, were translated into Persian. The library had separate enclosures for book binders, painters and translators. Dara bought thousands of books from Europe for this library.

The Braj Mandal Heritage Conservation Society has urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to acquire the building and take up restoration work before opening it to the public.

"This structure does not boast of power or royalty but symbolises the spirit of Sulah Kul, Din-e-Ilahi and the later day secularism. The library stands as a testimony to the high level of intellectualism and recognition of academic excellence," Society president Surendra Sharma said.

The red sandstone library building, which should have been conserved and protected by the ASI, is now with the Agra Municipal Corporation. Parts of it have been sold to traders at the Moti Ganj Mandi while other parts have been encroached upon. In its heyday, it was a beautiful building, with airy shelves for the books, provision of light and air, huge halls and scholarly ambience.

The central hall with highly decorative painted windows, stone-carved shelves for books with proper ventilation and air passages and natural light filters speak of the taste and passion of Dara Shikoh.

Evidence of this is still visible though the area has been reduced to a wholesale market of rice, jaggery and sugar.

During British Raj, the building was briefly used for the high court and then for government offices and the local body.

An over 300-year-old map of the area at the Agra University's K.M. Institute brings out the strategic location of the library.

An Archaeological Survey of India official said the property belonged to the Municipal Corporation and it should restore it. But others want the ASI to acquire the building and open it to the public so that the rich literary and academic legacy of Dara Shikoh become known.

Salim had married princess of Marwar,Manwati bai who bore him Khurram. As far as I know very very few Kshatriya clans observed cross cousin marriages in north India and that too was done sparringly. I cannot understand the stupidity being dished out in the name of entertainment and people lapping up the same without giving any prior thought.

Excerpts from Tuzk-e-Jahangiri:

http://persian.packhum.org/persian/main?url=pf%3Ffile%3D11001080%26ct%3D0

As the reality of the loyalty of my father's servants had not yet become apparent, and certain faults and errors and unbecoming intentions which were not approved at the throne of the Creator or pleasing to His creatures had shown themselves, they of themselves became ashamed. Though on the day of my accession I had forgiven all offences and determined with myself that I would exact no retribution for past deeds, yet on account of the suspicion that had been aroused in my mind about them I considered the Amru-l-umar my guardian and protector; although God Almighty is the guardian of all His servants, and is especially so of kings, because their existence is the cause of the contentment of the world. His father, Abdu--amad, who in the art of painting had no equal in the age, had obtained from the late king (Jannat-shyn) Humyn the title of Shrn-qalam (Sweet pen), and in his council had attained a great dignity and was on intimate terms with him (the king). He was one of the chief men of Shrz. My honoured father, on account of his former services, paid him great honour and reverence. I made Raja Mn Singh" who was one of the greatest and most trusted noblemen of my father, and had obtained alliances with this illustrious family, inasmuch as his aunt had been in my father's house (i.e. was his wife),* and I had married his sister, and Khusrau and his sister Sulnu-n-nis Begam, the latter of whom is my eldest child, were born of her"as before, ruler of the province of Bengal. Though as in consequence of certain of his acts he had no expectation of this favour towards himself, I dignified him with a chrqab (vest without sleeves) as a robe of honour, a jewelled sword, and one of my own horses, and sent him off to his province, which is a place of (or can keep up) 50,000 horse. His father was Raja Bhagwn Ds. His grandfather, Raja Bihr Mal, was the first of the Kachwha Rjpts to have the honour of entering my father's service, and he excelled his tribe in truth and sincerity of friendship, and in the quality of valour.

Jahangir never says that Harka bai was his mother, otherwise surely he would have mentioned her as his mother in this excerpt when he introduces Man singh's Aunt as his father's wife. He does mention Man Singh's sister as his wife. My question is how can Man Singh allow his sister to marry their cousin in this Jodha Akbar serial? Even though Salim followed Islam, as per the show Man singh and his sister were his first cousins and Kachhwahas could not have allowed that. If this marriage happened for real as is evident from Jahangirnama, it could have happened in one instance that is if Jahangir was not born of Harka Bai.
