I too have read this story about Draupadi wanting Karn as her husband. It goes like this.. Shri Krishna was strolling with Pandavas and Draupadi. They reached Rishi Sandipani's hermitage. There was a fruit orchard. Sandipani was Shri Krishna's guru. He told Pandavas that such was the power of penance of Sandipani that a fruit shed by a tree in the orchard would stick back to the branch if one spoke truth. Only Shri Krishna knew that Draupadi liked Karn, so he decided to play a game. He plucked a fruit and asked each Pandav to tell their thoughts honestly which no one else knew. Each of them bared their soul honestly and the fruit rose up from the ground towards the branch. When Draupadi's turn came, she talked about other things but did not reveal her wish for marrying Karn. As a result, the fruit fell back to the ground. Bheem was angry at Draupadi for not speaking her well guarded secret. Finally, she being cornered by Krishna and her husbands revealed the fact that she wanted to marry Karn as well. As soon as she told that, the fruit rose back to the branch and got stuck to it. This very fact put Yudhishthir in contemplation about Karn whereas Bheem was super angry with Draupadi.

Sahadev, the youngest Pandav was the wisest and the most astute among the five brothers. He was an expert of astrology, astronomy, economics, dharma - niti shaashtra and other sciences. In other words he was the most intelligent among the Pandavas apart from being the excellent swordsman along with Nakul. He was an excellent foreteller. He was an ardent devotee of Shri Krishna. So when Lord asked him if there was any way to avoid war he suggested him that Karn should be coronated as King of Hastinapur and Kauravs and Pandavs should be sent away to forest.
He always knew that Karn was Kaunteya and the eldest Pandav.

He certainly was at a disadvantage as his antecedents were not known but he got the best teacher one could ask for and would have also got due recognition for his talents had he only been a little more humble and a little more wise about the friends he chose😊

This comment is disingenuous at best - Karna had to resort to deception to get the guru he wanted, and got cursed for it. He got recognition from just one person Duryodhan who wanted to use him to negate the one advantage the Pandavas had over him - Arjun. The OP is right - the blame for this squarely rests w/ Kunti - had she told the Pandavas the night after the tournament who Karna really was, they could have apologized to him, and even though he may not have gotten Yudhisthir's position as the successor, due to his being born of Kanina rather than Niyoga, he'd still have been accepted as a Pandava: Drona wouldn't have refused him, he wouldn't have needed to lie to Parashurama, support Duryodhan or spend his life as a sycophant for the Kauravas. While Karna certainly deserves to be blamed for some of his own decisions - like lying to his guru, insulting Draupadi and so on, he was a victim of Kunti's narcissism and selfishness.

Yes,both Satyavati and Kunti approached their sons in times of need. However,if Kunti would have acknowledged Karna, then who knows he may not have joined Duryodhan at all.

Actually, Kunti did offer to acknowledge Karna, but by then, it was too late - Karna was up to his nose in his gratitude to Duryodhan, had insulted Draupadi, had been cursed by Parashurama & that Brahmin cow owner and so on. Kunti could have done the damage repair had she done it at the right time - when Karna needed her, not when she needed Karna. But the way she did it was nothing short of opportunist.

I too heard about this story, but it's not there in the original MB. If it were true, Draupadi would have allowed Karna to participate in attempting to shoot down the fish, and not forbidden him from participating due to grounds of caste.
