I definately wouldnt say that Gandhari or Bheeshm were selfish they were definately not. Infact they were extremely selfless which created problems for them
I just goes to show that being extreme on any side is not good.Being extremely good or extremely selfless is also not good and creates problems
Today we can easily say Gandhari was wrong and shouldnt have blindfolded herself but that is becuase we know the consequences of her action hence its easy for us to say that but that era was differnet that era was for pativartapatni's .Devotion to husband was considered as a women's strength so i would definately say that what Gandahri did was admirable becuase she sacrificed a lot with pure heart and good intentions. But sometimes things done with good intentions dont end up that way that is what happened in this case

If we think from gandhari's POV then it was a selfless act but practically it's a really stupid decision. She should have bee her husband's strength. Rather than sharing his pains, she should have vowed to remove them by being his eyes

Gandhari's decision to blindfold herself was to make herself an equal atleast when it came to physical abilities with Dhirdirashtra.. He was blind. So making herself blind was her way of telling him that she as his wife would take part in his distress and be a part of his world.

As the heir to the throne (until vidura quotes the Rajnithi and informs that a blind cannot be a king), the King had to be supreme. As a man to his wife, atleast in that point of time, Dhridrastra had to be supreme.. Hence Gandhari's decision..

Now this is also one of the reasons for Sakuni's anger is a different story. But at that point, Gandhari had no other inkling expect to be the 'perfect and understanding' wife of her husband.

She would have served better by being not blindfolded.. Maybe she could have seen her sons grow up and maybe Saguni would not have played such a big role. But then.. it was a decision for her husband at that time. She was strong.. Gandhari.. She was wise but she also knew her limits.😊

well said and due to her wrong decision dhritrashtra ended up even more helpless then before as Shakuni used him misguided him and he lost his chidlren

Thru him a foreigner was ruling Hastinapur

Shakuni and whatever shakuni wante dkept on happening which lead to the demise of his Sister's ghar sansar as she was the one who lost her 100 kids

what was the benefit of her stupid bheeshn pratigya?
who benefited - herself no her husband certainly not her kids hmm through out they lived without the guidence of either parents Hastinapur no the public no they kept on seeing conspiracies after conspiracies and the tamasha that kept on happening in the Royal backyard

only one person benefited SHAKUNI MAMA enemy of Bheeshm and kuruvansh
Gandhari helped him in every step of the way taking revenge.

so such selfless act on part of Gandhari turned into a selfish act during which she just thought of herself her feelings not Dhritrashtras

Yes, I agree with all your views...also I felt that dhritarastra having been blind from birth would sense the world from a different dimension...he has adapted himself to his blindness in his own way...but a person like Gandhari who has already seen the world, may perhaps find herself more handicapped than him...

true and we all saw that from a complete person Gandhari turned herself into a full fledge handicap

but I was thinking that the person who has never seen light who doesnt even know what it is to see something who is blind from birth how can he have inferiority complex we all saw that Dhritrashtra was a great yodha he didnt have eyes but he saw everything from his ears and his listening powers are greater then people who cud see in fact he sees better then any person with eyes

I have a feeling he got inferiority complex only after he was denied the throne and Shakuni took advantage of it and kept on feeding dhritrashtra myths and things which gave air to his denied ambitions due to his blindness thus developing inferiority complex

for this also Gandhari was responcible as she was unable to protect her husband from such dangers.
If only she could see what was happening to her husband and who is doign what.

as for his ambitions about becoming king may be his grand mother aloud him such dreams but if shaastra says that a blind person who is blind from birth can never be a king why did nobody stop dhritrashtra from dreaming such useless dreams and why Pandu was not prepared to be a king????

Exactly...if Vidur knew that a blind person cannot be king, then surely Bheeshm and others must have known...why didn't anyone say this to Dhritarastra?

Exactly! Maybe they were waiting for the right moment to throw the bomb. Its like bruising his ego even further.

Re Gandhari's selfless act, I think she should have waited to gauge what Dhritarashtra's ambitions and thoughts in life are about... she jumped upon her decision without really knowing what her husband wanted from her. Cause here the case was entirely opposite. He feels the complex due to her vow now!

Actually no.. The elders were still contemplating who to crown as king.. Dhridhrashtra assumed it would be him because he was the eldest.
He also always felt inferior about his blindness. His towering strength and his hearing abilities never did anything to make him whole. He was worried about his disability from the beginning.

Pandu was requested to be king when Vidura opposed Dhridhrashtra's crowning siting his blindness. The other great sages and ministers agreed with Vidura and hence the crowning was stopped. Pandu was asked to take up the throne.

Dhridhrashtra went mad with anger and grief and Pandu, seeing what had happened could not go with the decision of becoming King. He had to persuaded by Bhishm and other elders about duty to the citizens. He finally accepted only to give a power of attorney to rule to his brother while he went to expand the kingdom. It was hoped by Dhridhrashtra and Shaguni that Pandu would die in the process. But Pandu came back a Samrat while Dhridhrashtra again sulked.

Hence Pandu siting a curse decided to go to the forest with his wives and left Dhridhrashtra in charge of the kingdom until a suitable heir was born. Yudhishtir was the heir (first born of the king).😊

Well vidur was the only one who could have said it becuase he was knwon for speaking bitter truths.Bheeshm was great but he gave a lot of importance to relationships and other people's feelings but vidur when it came to his duty cared only about what is right and not other people's feelings.Hence no one spoke against dhridhrashtra becomimg a king other than vidur
