Gandhari listened with growing horror. For a great man like Bhishma to be insulted in this way was not right. She pushed the door aside and entered her father's chamber. "But I want to marry Prince Dritrashtra, dear brother."
"Gandhari?" Her father said in disbelief.
"Yes, father. I accept Bhishma's proposal."
"But, daughter-"
"Father, for a man like Bhishma to ask for something and be refused is wrong. I won't allow that."
"But, sister," Shakuni said, "Dritrashtra is blind. He is not even king! You are so lovely, you are meant for the greatest of emperors-"
"Dear brother, what could be better for me than a marriage into the noble Kuru clan? As of this moment I consider myself married to Prince Dritrashtra. And you say he is blind? Then as his wife it is my duty to partake of his sufferings for a husband and wife share everything."
Gandhari ripped the end of her sari off and used the shred of cloth to bind her eyes, tying the blindfold tightly behind her head.
