Small is no longer small. With a staggering viewership of more than 700 million and a market size of more than '35,000 crore, the small screen is all set for a 'big' leap forward. No wonder then Bollywood stars are now all looking at the small screen with keener interest. And if that's not enough, many who hadn't tasted success on silver screen have made it big on television. Ronit Roy, the blue eyed boy of small screen, has now bagged interesting film projects all thanks to his phenomenal success on the television.
Interestingly, the 'shift' is happening on both sides. Say for example - Nakuul Mehta, Ruslaan Mumtaaz, Shilpa Shirodkar, Anil Kapoor,Vatsal Seth and Amitabh Bachchan are now going to enjoy their soapy tryst with the small screen.
What prompts these film stars to go the 'telly' way. Nakuul Mehta, who's now a household name for his role in Pyaar Ka Dard Hai...Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara says, "As an actor, I feel no difference. I put my soul in every character I play - be it cinema or television. However, I think it was the production house and the channel that motivated me to take up this small screen venture. And I think I have become a strong actor after working in a daily soap."
Needless to say, being a part of daily soap has its own challenges asthe script goes for last minute changes. So how do actors having the experience of working in films (read more organised work atmosphere) deal with the 'telly' challenges? Actor Anil Kapoor who has just finished 100 days of the shoot for upcoming TV series 24, says, "I am just as thrilled and excited as every member. This is just the beginning. We are working round the clock to make sure we revolutionize television as a medium." The veteran actor has also roped in well known B-Town names like Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Richa Chaddha and Rahul Khanna for this show.
Even though entertainment is the common thread between the silver screen and the small screen, the difference in pushing the final show is palpable. How does an actor deal with it? Ruslaan Mumtaaz, who has just begun his journey on small screen with Kehta Hai Dil...Jee Le Zara shares, "One major difference IS that the character that's narrated to me now might change in a matter of few weeks. In soaps, storylines change unpredictably."
The television industry's phenomenal growth has made it a medium too hard to ignore. No wonder then B Town stars are all now too eager to grab the pie.
