Welcome to the first ever Doctor Who fan club on India Forums!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
ABOUT THE SHOW: Doctor Who is a British sci-fi television show that follows the fantastical life of the fictional time-traveling alien, the Doctor. The Doctor is a Time Lord from the distant planet of Gallifrey and he explores all of time and space in his spaceship, the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), which is bigger on the inside, and is often accompanied by a group of friends, his companions. The show first aired in 1963 and became popular all over Great Britain. Because the Doctor has the ability to regenerate into a new body at the point of death, many different actors have portrayed his character throughout the years. As of 2013, the Doctor has regenerated ten times and taken on eleven different forms. The current Doctor is played by Matt Smith, and on August 4, 2013, Peter Capaldi was confirmed to be the twelfth Doctor. He will take up the role after the 2013 Christmas special.

William Hartnell was the very first actor to essay the role of the Doctor. He was offered the role by the original producer of the show, Verity Lambert. At first, he was comprehensive about it, but he agreed anyway, and the show was an immediate success. Today, he is most widely remembered as the Doctor. His portrayal of the character became the foundation of his successors. He was at once the loving and attentive grandfather to his darling granddaughter, Susan, the caring friend of his companions, and also the strict intellectual who knew the universe's darkest secrets. His reign as the Doctor lasted for three seasons.

Patrick Throughton took over the role of the Doctor from Hartnell in 1966. His portrayal was vastly different from the original. Instead of the formally dressed, courteously mannered gentleman of Gallifrey, he was, in the words of the series's co-creater Sydney Newman, the endearing "cosmic hobo." As the Doctor, he would through off his enemies by feigning to not know anything at all, while his intelligent mind was always at work. And it also cannot be forgotten that it was during Throughton's time as the Doctor, that the most memorable prop, the sonic screwdriver was introduced. He portrayed the Doctor for three seasons.

Jon Pertwee succeeded Patrick Throughton as the third Doctor in 1970 and essayed the role till 1974. During this time, the character was forcibly exiled on Earth and working as a scientist for UNIT, an Earth military organization. His personality was suave and sophisticated and his dressing, dapper, a vastly different disposition than the previous incarnation. From time to time he would be sent to Gallifrey to act as a mediator, and he always lived for the moments where he could travel the stars once again, but despite that, he did develop a paternal fondness for his companions back on Earth. It was also during this time that his arch nemesis, the Master was first introduced. Their enmity later became a major plot line in the later seasons, being resolved much later in series 4 of 2010.

Tom Baker played the fourth incarnation of the Doctor from 1974 to 1981. His incarnation remains to this day the longest lived incarnation of the Doctor, episode wise. Furthermore, he is the most recognized incarnation with his iconic multicolored scarves, fluffy hair, and tweed jacket.

Peter Davison...

Colin Baker...

Sylvester McCoy...

Paul McGann...

Christopher Eccleston was the ninth incarnation of the Doctor and he appeared in only one series from 2004 to 2005. Despite that, his portrayal of the Doctor remains to be an iconic one because he was the first one to bring back the series after its long hiatus. In the show's storyline, the Doctor comes back after being a major part of the Time War. Much of his past is still a mystery, and there is a new dark side to him. Despite that, he picks his loving and young-hearted companion, Rose Tyler, and she is the one who brings him back from the dark side and restores his faith in humanity. Later on in the series, she becomes a love interest of his.
David Tennant was the tenth incarnation of the Doctor. He essayed the character from 2005 to 2010.

Matt Smith...

Peter Capaldi was confirmed to be the twelfth Doctor on August 4, 2013 on BBC World News, and he will make his first appearance on the show at the end of the Christmas Special.

RULES
  1. No cursing or rude/derogatory tone.

  2. No bashing of writers, characters, or actors portraying characters. You can criticize them, but there is a difference between having a valid argument and just being plain mean.

  3. You can talk about other actors/shows if they are related to this show, but let's try to keep the conversations centered around Doctor Who.

^ Sure! For now I think we need to think of a suitable title for it. Any Eleventh Doctor quote you're extremely fond of? 😳

Matt Smith on 'Doctor Who' (2005) 'There was a backlash when I was cast. I was 26 and I was unknown. And people went "That is not Doctor Who". I always knew I wanted it to be quite physical and I wanted the comedy to be quite physical and I knew I wanted him to feel very clever but at the same time to not quite understand the human race.'
