Pakistani music has diverse touches to it, ranging from South Asian, Persian, Arabic, with hints of modern day Western elements as well, which overall makes the music distinct and unique in its own way. Another big element of Pakistani music is the use of poetry/ghazal, with the use of rhyming couplets, and qawwali, which stems from the Islamic sect of Sufism.
Much of the Pakistani music uses all kinds of instruments, including table, guitars, dhol, and harmoniums.

The songs below come from several different singers and bands.

W O H H U M S A F A R T H A

Based on a novel by Farhat Ishtiaq, Humsafar has swept homes in not just Pakistan but worldwide, proverbially like 'tsunami'. It's not just the drama, the melodious title song has done wonders as well. The mellifluous voice is none other than Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch's, who has poured her soul in the song to give it the magical feel it has. And so with the exceptionally poetic quality of the lyrics, this song now tops everyone's playlists.

This song is romantic, sad and fun-filled all in the same time.

The sad lyrics are what open the song where the female sings to the male about their relationship having ups and downs, but there was never separation;

Ke dhoop chhaon ka...
Ke dhoop chhaon ka alam raha, judaai na thi
Wo humsafar thaa
Magar us sey humnawai na thi...
K dhoop chhaon ka alam raha, judaai na thi.
Wo humsafar tha...
Wo humsafar tha...

The second stanza further elaborates on the relationship saying there were hostile, estrange and had lack of interest towards one another, but the two never cheated on one another;

Adaavatein theen...
Taghaaful thaa...
Ranjishein theen Magar
Bicharne walay main sab kuch tha bewafai na thi...

H O N A T H A P Y A A R

This 4 minute and 43 seconds song has stolen many hearts. Sung by the ever popular Atif Aslam and melodious Hadiqa Kiyani, 'Hona Tha Pyaar' was released on September 2011 through Shoaib Mansoor's super hit film Bol, which changed the face of Lollywood altogether. Released by Geo Music, and produced by Shiraz Uppal, it was nominated for numerous awards including Pakistan Media Awards, Lux Style Awards and PTV Awards. Composed by 16 year old Ali Javed and written by Captain Imran Raza.

The song that starts off with a fast beat has these very romantic and promising lyrics;

Tere dil ke sheher mein ghar mera ho gaya, ho gaya
Sapna dekha jo tum ne woh mera ho gaya, ho gaya
Doobe to yoon jaise ho paar
Hona tha pyaar, huaa mere yaar
Hona tha pyaar

It stands true to its lyrics:

Thaame dilon ki baahein, hum aate saalon mein, saalon mein
Paaye jawaab hum ne tere sawaalon mein, sawaalon mein
Khwaabon ki dor toote na yaar
Hona tha pyaar, huwa mere yaar
Hona Tha Pyaar

Shehr-e-Zaat was a super hit show only because it showed the transformation of a rich brat to a religious and understanding female. The song of the show, although, was even more famous because it was sung by the very melodious and evergreen voice of Abida Perveen.

The very passionate lyrics that instantly remind one of their love and of Allah are as follows:

Kaheen woh baadshaah-e-takht nasheen
kahin kaasa liye gadaa dekha
yaar ko humne ja-ba-ja dekha
kahin zahir kahin chupa dekha
kahin wo der libaas-e-mashokan
bar-sare naaz aur aada dekha
kahin zahir jahin chupa dekha
yaar ko humne ja-ba-ja dekha

N I N D I Y A R E

Kaavish is known for their mellow sound and sweet melodies and this is what they bring to Coke Studio with "Nindiya Re". Jaffer Zaidi's voice as he sings this lullaby, virtually induces tranquility. Kaavish guitarist Maaz Maudood and Omran Shafique create a restfully layered backdrop on acoustic guitars and are joined by Gumby who makes a surprising departure from drums to play guitar on this song. Featuring minimalistic percussions and the feather light tonality of the xylophone "Nindiya Re" is a persuasive invocation that soothes the senses and brings on a peaceful calm.

Recently, Nindiya Re was also used by a Telefilm - Behadd - produced by the very famous channel - Hum TV. The cast of the telefilm included Fawad Khan, Sajal Ali and Nadia Jamil giving the song even more popularity.

This is a slow song that starts with the perfect bedtime lyrics;

Haule haule raaton ko chupke se aaja re
Nindiya re nindiya re
Akhiyon mein samaaja re
Nindiya re
Nindiya re
Nindiya re
Nindiya re

Second stanza being even more beautiful and mesmerizing is heartwarming;

Kahin door sitaaron pih chanda ke ishaaron pih
Palne ko tere jo pariyon ne jhulaaya re
Nindiya re
Nindiya rey..
Nindiya re
Nindiya re

Z A R R A - E - B E N I S H A N

One can't really define the title in just few words, but it generally means that 'my being, my personality and everything that I am is meaningless to the world and will leave no mark in the world'. The title song of this drama is beautifully apt for the story, and the pain in the lyrics comes through in the singer's voice.

The lyrics that withhold the heart and make one teary eyed are as follows;

Kabhi suni subho main ghumna, Kabhi ujri shamon ko dekhna,
Kabhi bheegi ankhoon sy jagna, Kabhi beete lamhon ko sochna,
Magar aik pal hy umeed ka hy mujhe khuda ka jo aasra,
Naa hi main ne koi geela kia, Naa hi main ne di hy duhaiyan,

Meri zaat zara benishaan

M A I N T O D E K H O O N G A

Bilal Maqsood, who penned the lyrics, has out- done himself. Inflation, corrupt leadership, dismembered unity of the nation and feudalism are just those few of the many things that are constantly hurting the Pakistani's and bringing Pakistan down by just a notch. Maqsood has astutely outlined every disease that plagues the country. This song is a message to all those who are tired of the situation and want to leave, to run away, but running away is not the solution. We have to look for our answers here.

Wishful thinking and a hope that there will be a time when all Pakistani's will rise in unity and fight against all the corruption is what this song is all about.

The lyrics that touch the heart of every true Pakistani are in the very beginning of the song;

Jab roti sasti hogi
Aur mehngi ho gi jaan
Wo din phir aayega Jab aisa,
Hoga Pakistan

Continuing onto mentioning unity and all political fights coming to an end are the following lyrics;

Jab rang barangay jhanday
Ik parcham mein ghul jaengay

Finally, with the hope that all those who run away from Pakistan will come back are what end the song with perfection;

Jab mulq ko baich Kay khane wale
Khud hazm hojaengay

Aur pushton say Jo gaddi bethay
Sab bheer may mil jaengay

Jo duur Gaye thae bhoolay say
Lautaengay phir watan ko aik shaam

Wo din phir aayega Jab aisa,
Hoga Pakistan.

Z I N D A G I K H A A K N A T H I

Novel based love story, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, the show that created a ruckus in Karachi with the girls wanting to see Fawad Khan shoot for the drama written by Umera Ahmed and aired on the popular channel of Pakistan, Hum TV in early 2013. The song was sung by Ali Zafar as well as Hadiqa Kiani in late December 2012, which made it to an instant hit.

The lyrics are beautifully written and thought out that include the following lines that tell the story of a girl who can't help but just dream.

Zindagi Khaak Na Thi, Khaak Ura Kay Guzri
Tujh Say Kiya Kehty, Tery Paas Jo Aatay Guzri

Din Jo Guzra Tu Kisi Yaad Ki Ro Main Guzra
Shaam Aayi Tu Koi Khuwaab Dikhatay Guzri
Tugh Say Kiya Kehtay Tery Paas Jo Aatay Guzri
Zindagi...

The female voice is very melodious and this next set of lyrics basically mean that no matter how many sad moments, life may have, it is still life for which we are forever thankful.

Raat Kiya Ai Kay Tanhai Kay Sargoshi Main
Ghum Ka Aalam Tha Magar Suntay Sunatay Guzri
Tugh Say Kiya Kehtay Tery Paas Jo Aatay Guzri
Zindagi...Zindagi...Zindagi...
