The hero makes a gallant

Nearing his waiting beloved's

Thumbing the Pepsi bottles open,
he hands one to his lady.
Suddenly, our director realizes,
"Arre! Yeh to meri picture hai!"

And we see a turn of events. "Darling!",
she calls and our director arrives
on the scene. Snatching the Pepsi
from the hero, she passes it to him.

The bandits, whose horse our
hero had escaped with, catch
up with the train, abduct and tie
him up. Super: 'Yeh dil maange more.'

thx alott.I've not seen the first add but the second was gr8.

Shah Rukh's reign: Is the end nigh?

Saibal Chatterjee | WIDE ANGLE

New Delhi, September 6, 2006

Keep an eye on the imminent release of superstar Shah Rukh Khan's second film of the year, Farhan Akhtar's Don. More than anything else, it will probably deliver the answer to a question that has been dogging the more discerning among Mumbai movie industry observers for a while now: is King Khan's reign nearing its end?

Shah Rukh fans might feel that this question is a tad premature because the star is still a saleable proposition. Indeed, That has always been Shahrukh's strength. More a performer than an actor, he draws crowds to the movie theatres with his innate ability to provide unalloyed entertainment within a limited, predictable bandwidth.

Therein lies his greatest drawback. Shah Rukh has never showed evidence of an inclination to break free from his established screen persona and get into the skin of a character. He has never been required to go beyond set patterns because his fans seem to be happy enough with the way he is. So whether he is a lover boy, an army man or a royal figure from the pages of history, Shah Rukh will always play Shah Rukh.

But it's getting terribly tiresome. If his laboured performance in Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is any indication, fatigue seems to be catching up with him. Well, it makes perfect sense for a superstar to keep repeating himself as long as the tried and tested set of mannerisms appeals to the masses, but it is time for reinvention when it stops working.

Shah Rukh Khan as Don in Farhan Akhtar's version of the classic film
Will Don, a reworking of a monster hit of the 1970s, provide that much-needed injection of novelty into Shah Rukh's career?
If it doesn't and if Shah Rukh comes up short in the inevitable comparison with the original Amitabh Bachchan star turn, it could spell the beginning of the end of the Shah Rukh Khan era.

Surrounded by a new breed of male stars that have learnt how to downplay their established screen personas in order to flesh out clearly defined characters, Shah Rukh does not have much room for complacency. For the likes of Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan (now preparing to play Akbar in Ashutosh Gowariker's next film), Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, substance has taken precedence over mere show in a series of recent films.

Shah Rukh has increasingly begun to look like a bit of an anachronism, a throwback to a past when it was enough for a star to play himself, no matter what the role.

Many superstars before Shah Rukh – Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna, to name the most prominent – have suffered much the same fate. Amitabh ruled Bollywood for close to two decades on the strength of his angry young man image, but by the late 1980s, that career-defining persona had outlived its utility. Therefore, when the biggest star Bollywood has ever seen sought to extend his run at the top with an ill-advised dependence on the image of the past, he came a cropper.

If the redoubtable Amitabh Bachchan is still a force to reckon with, it is because he has successfully made the transition from an all-conquering superstar peddling a saleable image to an actor of many parts taking on creative challenges.

Actors trapped in an image (notably Rajesh Khanna) are known to fade out completely once their fan support base erodes. Remember the last few films of Khanna's career as a superstar? A slave to mannerisms, he let his persona overwhelm the actor in him. Audiences lost patience with his jaded style, and the one-time box office king lost ground quickly.

Shah Rukh Khan is pretty close to a situation where he seems to be acting merely from memory, not from any creative stimuli stemming from the assignment at hand. In KANK, his pronounced mannerisms kill any possibility of the character he plays, a failed footballer turned coach, acquiring a life of its own.

Shah Rukh the superstar is in desperate need of resuscitation. Don, therefore, will be one of the most important films of his career. It will tell us whether he is good enough for a new lease of life at the top.

which source is this frm?😑

Shah Rukh Khan

As the release of Farhan Akhtar's remake of Don starring Shahrukh Khan neared release, our film critic Saibal Chatterjee analysed the badshah's standing in Bollywood.

We asked our surfers if King Khan's reign was indeed nearing its end? And surprisingly SRK got support from the most unlikely of corner - Europe. Many of European surfers wrote in to say that SRK is here to stay.

Here's how it went.

Writing from Dsseldorf in Germany, Isabel Kocsis said SRK is Bollywood's face in Europe.

"In Europe Shahrukh Khan is newly discovered and beloved more than any other Indian actor. No Hrithik Roshan or Abhishek Bachchan can be compared with him in western countries, and whatever he is filming he is number one in a worldwide dimension."

"I have seen nearly all his films and I think he is a great and difference actor with big variability. Also KANK is very interesting and I am curious about Don. But I think India should give his greatest star and actor better roles in better films."

Jas writing from New Haven, USA felt it was a very disappointing article by Saibal Chatterjee.

"It seems the critic has something personal against SRK. Is it all the fame and success he's achieved that makes him an easy target?"

"Anyway, I don't really need to defend SRK, because frankly speaking, his superstardom speaks for itself and his immense fan base isn't going to 'erode' anytime in the next 100 years. It's doing the exact opposite, with SRK generating an interest in Indian movies within people who may never have otherwise bothered to watch."

"The basic premise that SRK never attempts anything new is completely unwarranted. What were Baazigar, Paheli, Swades and KANK if not attempting new things? And those are only a few of the many movies in which he deviated from what people call his 'usual'."

"When he departs from this 'usual' critics say he should continue doing his usual to appease the masses; when he does his 'usual' the very same critics say he never takes risks. So make up your mind, people!"

John of Ottawa, Canada too felt otherwise.

"No. I don't believe its any where close to the end of his reign. We all suffer from withdrawal when he has not had a release soon enough to satisfy our needs to see him in action. It was clear that KANK was the much-awaited SRK release and no one else. The rest of the characters in this film were clearly for supporting purposes only."

Amorette of Bronx in the US was all in favour of SRK.

"I disagree strongly. Shahrukh is a phenomenon and the best thing to happen to India cinema. We, his fans, will always stand by him."

Khalil M from Mumbai, India however was in agreement with our critic.

"I couldn't agree more with you. I couldn't gather courage to watch the movie as his last few flicks were quite boring. Not that it matters to SRK, as he is still a big time star. But its time he reinvents himself, as age seems to be catching with him and he needs to do some creative roles like Aamir or Saif to hold on to his fan-base. Well written article!"

Amit Kumar Verma from Gurgaon, India too gave his perspective to the debate.

"SRK is the partial king of Indian filmdom. He has been an icon of style. He does films mostly based on 'chiffon' dreams. So, naturally he is the badshah of youngsters. The moment we shift the track to entertaining but realistic films, other contemporary actors evidently appears to conquer SRK."

ShahRukh Khan is talked about for everything he does or doesn't do. From his movies, fashion, family to his friends. And now his muscled and toned body is the talk of town. Well, he's always flaunted a lean physique, but never before did SRK work so hard. In fact, there's a beeline of new clients for his fitness trainer, Prashant, who has walked away with all the credit for SRK's new look. And take a wild guess who he will be training next? No, it isn't any sexy siren from Bollywood. It's Adnan Sami. Yes, he has asked Prashant to help him become fit. Well, almost. Will one see Adnan with a welltoned body like SRK's?

DON' tops the charts, 'Jaan-E-Mann' and LRM enter too
By Joginder Tuteja, September 8, 2006 - 04:10 IST
Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses

1
7 Don – The Chase Begins Again Within 10 days of its release, the music of 'Don' has zoomed to the top of the charts and is expected to stay at the same position for many more weeks to come. 'Ye Mera Dil' has just arrived while 'Khaike Paan' hasn't even knocked yet. One waits for the audience response once that happens because then there is going to be mass hysteria! Just like it happens with the arrival of every big film music album, even 'Don' has found its detractors with some accusing Shankar Ehsaan Loy to have mainly remixed the songs from the original 'Don'! Well, that's far from true since the album does maintain an entity of its own. If at all there is some threat, it's from 'Jaan-E-Mann' that has just released. It would be an interesting battle at the top between the two as weeks progress!

2
1 KANK For the first time since its release, KANK moves down from its # 1 spot, though the good part is that this happens only by a solitary position. SEL must have a lot to cheer about since two of their biggest soundtracks are at the top of the charts. Karan Johar and SEL have recreated the feel of KHNH in KANK. Nothing wrong with that since the album has been accepted but they could do something different in their next outing since audience may not be as receptive the third time around!

3
10 Bas Ek Pal Just like 'Don', even 'Bas Ek Pal' takes a mighty jump by 7 places to straightaway move into Top-3. After a rather slow but encouraging start, 'Bas Ek Pal' is now a success (at least musically) with Mithoon composed and Atif sung 'Tere Bin' rocking the charts all over. One hopes the good luck rubs over the movie too as it releases next week! Not meant for those who are looking at a conventional 'pyaar mohabbat' Bollywood score! Also, it may not be a bad idea to start promoting other tracks (some really melodious tracks by Viveck Phillip) too!

4
5 Omkara In a week of shuffling of number of albums and arrival of many more, 'Omkara' actually moves a step up! Now this is something unheard of for music of majority of films that actually show a downwards trend when a film is set to exit the theatres. Jo bikta hai wo achcha hai! The sales of 'Omkara' do not really make one cite a weakness any more. The music has proved to be 'lambi race ka ghoda'!

5
3 Aap Ki Khatir A couple of really enjoyable tunes by Reshammiya give the music sales of 'Aap Ki Khatir' a boost. Dharmesh Darshan's penchant for popular music is visible yet again though not on the same scale as majority of his earlier musical hits. Inevitable happens as 'Aap Ki Khatir' moves down the charts by a couple of positions as the film doesn't lure many to the theatres.

6
8 Woh Lamhe In a week when number of albums have moves up, 'Woh Lamhe' also shows a jump. As expected, a remix promotional music video of 'Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai' is out that has further helped the music register amongst the audience. Just like 'Gangster'. 'Woh Lamhe' too is taking a steady approach from the sales perspective. If the film is a success, the music can further zoom up the charts but if that doesn't happen, it may be disheartening to see 'Woh Lamhe' exiting the charts in a few weeks time.

7
4 Gangster Back to back with 'Woh Lamhe', 'Gangster' falls 3 steps down. Nevertheless Pritam has two hits with Vishesh Films now and it would be interesting to see if he truly and firmly becomes a part of the Bhatt camp! After plagiarism stories erupted about 'Gangster' with slight murmurs about 'Woh Lamhe' as well, every song by Pritam is being looked at with hawk-eyes!

8
2 Fanaa Jatin Lalit exit the music scene with 'Fanaa' that is now showing signs of fatigue. Though good news for their fans is that they would be hearing their music in Shatrughan Sinha's home production 'Mera Dil Leke Dekho'. If 'Fanaa' being at # 2 for so long wasn't surprising enough, a bigger surprise was in store this week to see it taking a fall by 6 positions and landing at #8.

9
New Lagey Raho Munnabhai It happened in case of 'Munnabhai MBBS' and it has happened again in case of 'Lahey Raho Munnabhai'. After the songs were seen on the big screen, their popularity has increased hence enabling this Shantanu Moitra album to make a belated entry into the charts. Situational tracks that can be enjoyed most only when being seen rather than heard!

10
New Jaan-e-mann 'Jaan-E-Mann' has just released but this is the last instance of it being at this position. Why? Because it is destined to movie further up from now on due to grandeur music by Anu Malik. He makes a terrific comeback and churns out some of the classiest melodies ever composed in contemporary time. The songs have a classy touch that would make it a hot property mainly in the urban centers to begin with. Gradually it has a chance to pick up elsewhere too but that would mainly depend on the promotion and picturisation

gr888.My fav albums r at the top.but i still feel kank's music is better
