REVIEWS: Tanhaiyan Nayee Silsilay [ARY] Full Drama Review
,Tanhaiyaan, which aired on PTV more than twenty-five years ago, is back on screens with part II. When thenews first came out, everyone was ecstatic. We all wanted to see our favorite characters brought to life by the likes of Marina Khan and Behroz Sabzwari onscreen.
Surprisingly, the serial (in my opinion) was never promoted properly. May be, just maybe, they thought the fact that it is a sequel to a popular show would bring in viewers. Good thing, but… anyhow, let's get ahead with the review.
Tanhaiyan Nayee Silsilay (I despise the name) takes place 25 years after the first one. Shehnaz Sheikh's character has died and her husband (Asif Raza Mir) is back to Pakistan with his two daughters (Alishba, arrogant and rude and Syra, lovely and cute) giving rise to new controversies and troubles. It basically talks about generation gap and some real problems that people go through.
On paper, the story doesn't look out of the box or unique. Honestly, I was never too impressed with Tanhaiyan's story either. I think it was more to do with the overall presentation. Fortunately, the writers (Haseena Moin and M. Ahmed) carry the same tone that the sequel carried; however, they went overboard at times.
Some characters are just too much. You are not sure what the writers were thinking when they penned down the script. Many sub plots and characters fell flat, including some stupid jokes. Many scenes having Behroz Sabzwari were pathetic in my opinion, such as his changing costumes. Additionally, the whole "spirit" angle is also pathetic in my opinion. Nevertheless, the good thing is that the serial doesn't get grim and remains light.
The director Marina Khan deserves special mention for effortlessly pulling off some scenes (Alishba and Shehryar's first meeting for example, where the passport falls in the aquarium) are excellent. The editing is perfectly fine, but I seriously don't know why some characters (read Alishba) were wearing stupid outfits throughout. Additionally, the brand is nicely promoted and the director makes sure every episode moves, but the "grip" is missing, which is generally the case with most light serials.
The dialogues deserve a special mention. They have the "Haseena Moin" mark and bring a smile on your face. The OST is melodious and so is the background music that springs up something.
Now to the acting, the oldies show that they own it all. Marina Khan is extremely likeable. The role comes effortlessly to her. Bravura performance by the actress who can pull off anything with ease! Badar Khalil leaves you impressed after a very long period of time. Qazi Wajid makes good use of the space he is given, really good actor. Completely under control!
Asif Raza Mir doesn't get much to do. He is completely sidelined! Durdana Buttdoes what she does in most of the serials.
Now to the new actors, Syra Yusuf is the only one who stands out. This is her career best performance. I must commend the makers for casting her in this role. The actress is immensely likeable. She makes u smile whenever she appears onscreen. Alishba Yusuf on the other hand gets a very good role but completely ruins it. Her scenes with Shehryar Munawwar are worth forwarding. You'll be scowling wondering why they Okayed the scenes. The actress has given commendable performances in the past, no idea what went wrong here.
Shehryar Munnawar looks good onscreen, but only until he opens his mouth to utter dialogues. He was acceptable in Mere Dard… only because he had no dialogues. I sincerely feel he should only play such roles until he improves his dialogue delivery and expressions. Watch out for the scene where he is discussing his parents with Alishba. The scene is supposed to show his pain, but falls flat due to his and Alisha's poor acting.
Shehroz Sabzwari leaves an impact but goes overboard at times. Nevertheless, his chemistry with Syra is excellent. Alishba and Shehryar also got good scenes, but Syra and Shehroz made good use of them. The maid irritates u at times, but only because she got such a poor role – an overkill.
Overall, Tanhaiyan NS is a compelling watch in bits and parts. The biggest asset is the fact that it is different, moves nicely and has a certain factor (sequel) in its favor. On the downside, there are too many poorly performed scenes in addition to crude humor. To sum it up, Tanhaiyan NS is nothing special but you can Watch it "chaltay phirtay".
